Stuart Robinson was a prominent Presbyterian newspaper editor who took upon himself the dangerous task of distinguishing between the spiritual world and within a border state "city of conflict" during the Civil War. Presently, historians tend to depict religion during the American Civil War as domesticated under sectional nationalism -- where theologizing was directed at justifying the war in order to forge either a northern or southern Zion. Graham argues that such one-sided depictions do not sufficiently account for either the existence of a border state phenomenon during the civil war or the kind of theologizing that was being propagated from out of the border states against the domestication of religion to sectional politics. In A Kingdom Not of This World: Stuart Robinson's Struggle to Distinguish the Sacred from the Secular During the Civil War Preston D. Graham, Jr. presents a case study of a rather sizeable movement among border state Presbyterians, with special attention given to their most celebrated and influential leader, the Dr. Rev. Stuart Robinson of Louisville, Kentucky. Given the significance of Robinson's theologizing relative to the American doctrine of the separation of church and state, several primary resources are included in a reader portion of the appendix.

Mark Atwood is the only son of an accountant / insurance salesman, Chris Atwood, and part-time secretary / homemaker, Mira Carson Atwood, who live in Whitley, Tennessee. Events of a tragic past are recounted by Mira to Mark. Chris and Miras lives become wound around several figures of a local Baptist church that they have joined: Brother Bob Clark, the dogmatic pastor of the church, and the imposing chair of the deacons at the church, Hamilton Wallace Stewart, known as Ham. Chris becomes embroiled in several conflicts between the pastor and Ham on various church issues. The events rise to a climactic occurrencea Wednesday evening prayer and business meeting in which a power play occurs in the leadership of the church. Afterward, a car accident changes the lives of the characters. Years later, in a story recounted by Mark to Mira, Mark finishes his doctorate in literature and accepts his first teaching job at Andrew Jackson University. Mark clashes with students and administrators and is eventually dismissed from the university. He also romances and secretly marries a beautiful, African-American biology professor, Eva Garden, whose destiny become entwined with and separated from his. The novel covers such controversies as abuses of religious and academic leadership and the shadowy intolerance of inter-racial marriage. Issues and themes surrounding these controversies are explored with colorings of event, character, setting, and symbol that make the novel a panoply of people and culture in the modern South.

Linguistic annotation and text analytics are active areas of research and development, with academic conferences and industry events such as the Linguistic Annotation Workshops and the annual Text Analytics Summits. This book provides a basic introduction to both fields, and aims to show that good linguistic annotations are the essential foundation for good text analytics. After briefly reviewing the basics of XML, with practical exercises illustrating in-line and stand-off annotations, a chapter is devoted to explaining the different levels of linguistic annotations. The reader is encouraged to create example annotations using the WordFreak linguistic annotation tool. The next chapter shows how annotations can be created automatically using statistical NLP tools, and compares two sets of tools, the OpenNLP and Stanford NLP tools. The second half of the book describes different annotation formats and gives practical examples of how to interchange annotations between different formats using XSLT transformations. The two main text analytics architectures, GATE and UIMA, are then described and compared, with practical exercises showing how to configure and customize them. The final chapter is an introduction to text analytics, describing the main applications and functions including named entity recognition, coreference resolution and information extraction, with practical examples using both open source and commercial tools.
