This book includes the full story of the company, which sold its last ship in the 1990s, and all its craft are fully detailed. Although best known for their sleek cargo liners -- once known as the Leith yachts -- the company has also owned or managed bulk carriers, drill ships and rigs, container ships, and chemical and crude tankers, and all are included.
A history of the Aberdeen Steam Navigation Company, primarily from 1836 to 1974, as based on company records held at the University of Aberdeen and the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich.
From the 15th Century, Leith has been the port for Scotland's Capital. Originally a separate burgh, Leith & Granton have been one of the most important ports in Scotland. From whaling to grain imports to the building of some of the most exclusive steam yachts in the world, the port has been an important provider of jobs for the past three centuries or more. Subjects covered inside include shipbuilding at Henry Robb's, local shipping lines such as Christian Salvesen, London & Edinburgh and the Currie Line, ferries and passenger sailings, as well as the industry that grew up beside the port, from rope works to bonded warehouses.
