Fancy goods include the most modest and domestic of items, like the pen wipes that the Sisters shaped into objects such as dolls, mittens, and flowers; or the emeries, pincushions, and needle books lovingly made back in an era when more than a minimal competency in sewing was expected in women; to more substantial purchases like the Dorothy cloaks that were in demand among fashionable women of the world; or the heavy rib-knitted sweaters, cardigans, and pullovers that became popular items among college boys and adventurous women.

“UNBELIEVABLE” was first published in 2010. It was the second in what is now a trilogy of memoirs; first being a one-person autobiographical musical titled, “AND NOW, FOR MY NEXT LIFE” which was presented in Los Angeles at The Zephyr Theatre in 1992. The second is this book. And now a third offering; a new 5-character musical titled “UNBELIEVABLE, but true” which is (at this printing) in the beginning stages of production. The most difficult part of writing my life story in any form is acknowledging there is no logical ending because my journey is ongoing. But what has ended is my search for resolution or “closure.” Closing a book and slamming a door doesn’t make the hurt go away. It forces you to write a new chapter or enter a new room. It is called evolving. One specific benchmark of my evolution was changing my name from “Steven Henry Goldring” to “Henry Goldring.” I never liked “Steven” with its sibilant “s” Sissy-Steve connotation. And because my grandfather (and namesake) Henry Perilstein was truly the one person in my world who showed me unconditional love, deleting the source of childhood bullying and honoring my grandfather was a tangible path forward. And finally accepting the deep-seated truth of who I am has set me free. As you read this 2nd Edition of the 2nd Installment, please remember… JUST BECAUSE I’M DIFFERENT FROM YOU, DOESN’T MEAN I’M NOT NORMAL TOO. I MUST REALIZE, THERE’S NO TRUTH IN DISGUISE. Most examinations of non-citizens in Canada focus on immigrants, people who are citizens-in-waiting, or specific categories of temporary, vulnerable workers. In contrast, Producing and Negotiating Non-Citizenship considers a range of people whose pathway to citizenship is uncertain or non-existent. This includes migrant workers, students, refugee claimants, and people with expired permits, all of whom have limited formal rights to employment, housing, education, and health services. The contributors to this volume present theoretically informed empirical studies of the regulatory, institutional, discursive, and practical terms under which precarious-status non-citizens – those without permanent residence – enter and remain in Canada. They consider the historical and contemporary production of non-citizen precarious status and migrant illegality in Canada, as well as everyday experiences of precarious status among various social groups including youth, denied refugee claimants, and agricultural workers. This timely volume contributes to conceptualizing multiple forms of precarious status non-citizenship as connected through policy and the practices of migrants and the institutional actors they encounter.
