The intertwined Prescott, Manzone, and Grant clans have made their marks on the world against the backdrop of the turbulent and astounding 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. As the mid-1990s roll on into an exciting new millennium, evil forces rise from the ashes of the past and inexplicably threaten these families peaceful, productive lives in San Francisco. The tight-knit group searches for answers to the growing peril: perpetrators who are driven by lethal rage and savage depravity and for whom there is neither redemption nor a show of mercy toward the people they hope to demolish. Not only do they seek to destroy the families but their friends as well with grotesquely malevolent intent. Through passion, strength, and utter fearlessness, family members battle back to reclaim their lives and end the savage thirst for revenge of beings that could only be considered demons from hell. Will Norah, Adam, Zack, Trenton, Toni, and their next generations succeed? Or is the evil too smart, too immoral, and far too determined to be defeated?

Having lost his wife in childbirth he needs to reorganize his life and help his children adjust to living without a mother. Joshua has always feared that something would happen to his family with the world in turmoil, so he builds bomb shelters and eventually converts a cave into a massive shelter to withstand a nuclear bomb. In This Invisible Riot of the Mind, Gloria Sybil Gross contends that Samuel Johnson was a pioneer in the development of modern psychological thought, challenging the timeworn, stilted typecasting of Samuel Johnson as the pious Christian moralist. Instead, she argues that Johnson was a daring, at times irreverent, explorer of human nature, who strenuously rejected old relics of sanctimony and repressive authority. To make her case, Gross draws on a wide range of materials from Johnson's life and works, as well as from eighteenth-century medical psychology. Throughout, she is scrupulous in analyzing Johnson's psychological thought within the cultural idiom that would have been available to him. At the same time, she employs a classical psychoanalytic approach, that seeks to establish a coherent relationship among Johnson's life, his fantasies, and his creative work. This reading of Johnson reveals the radical direction of his investigations of mental experience, which put him in clear prospect of the basic premises underlying Freudian psychoanalysis. Gross argues that these premises—the principle of psychological determinism, the view of the mind as dictated by forces in conflict, the concept of the dynamic unconscious, and the submerged power of desire in all human activity—pervade Johnson's writings. Gross demonstrates not only that Johnson can profitably be read in psychoanalytic terms, but that Johnson is a psychological theorist of primary importance. This original and insightful work will be of interest to students and scholars of English literature, eighteenth-century studies, and literature and psychology.

1977. Disco was blasting across the airwaves and the Bee Gees and Donna Summer reigned supreme. Jimmy Carter assumed the presidency after the debacle of the Nixon administration. Star Wars and Close Encounters of the Third Kind hit movie screens and birthed a new exploration of cinematic science fiction while Saturday Night Fever became the biggest dancing movie of all time. Elvis Presley, the King of Rock & Roll, died at age 42. Egypt and Israel made significant progress in peace talks. Serial killer David Berkowitz, the Son of Sam, was captured in New York while another infamous serial killer, Ted Bundy, was still cutting a swath of murders across the country. People were still adjusting to the end of the Vietnam war and looking forward to a new prosperity and social stability. In Providence, Rhode Island, private investigator and Scottish expatriate Nick MacKenzie is inexplicably drawn into a crime mystery when two skeletons fall out of a demolished old house and an investigation opens that reaches back to the era of the Great Depression and Prohibition. As Nick digs deeper into the crime, he uncovers evidence that that takes on a personal meaning. Along the way he acquires new and very unexpected friends as well as an enemy that will do anything to keep the past hidden, even kill. Through strange circumstances Nick also acquires a young foster son with a hidden past. As the mysteries and discoveries progress Nick and his circle become not only fast friends but an odd sort of family that redefines the very concept. He is joined by a gung-ho cop whose professional aspirations take a shocking turn; an elderly man who knows more than he’s saying about the lynchpin year of 1933; an old woman who is far more than she presents to the world; a scion of a mob family that seeks to forge a decent future; and a young lawyer whose personal demons lead him to an unexpected life path. As the end games of the mysteries count down to their climaxes, the only question is – who will survive, and at what cost?
This stunning examination of the last years of Édouard Manet's life and career is the first book to explore the transformation of his style and subject matter in the 1870s and early 1880s. The name Manet often evokes the provocative, heroically scaled pictures he painted in the 1860s for the Salon, but in the late 1870s and early 1880s the artist produced quite a different body of work: stylish portraits of actresses and demimondaines, luscious still lifes, delicate pastels, intimate watercolors, and impressionistic scenes of suburban gardens and Parisian cafés. Often dismissed as too pretty and superficial by critics, these later works reflect Manet’s elegant social world, propose a radical new alignment of modern art with fashionable femininity, and record the artist’s unapologetic embrace of beauty and visual pleasure in the face of death. Featuring nearly three hundred illustrations and nine fascinating essays by established and emerging Manet specialists, a technical analysis of the late Salon painting Jeanne (Spring), a selection of the artist’s correspondence, a chronology, and more, Manet and Modern Beauty brings a diverse range of approaches to bear on a little-studied area of this major artist’s oeuvre.
Brilliant, beautiful, difficult and doomed, Iris Wilkinson (known as the writer Robin Hyde) led a short, tumultuous and incredibly productive life. Here her story is told for the first time in a dramatic and deeply moving narrative. Researched by both authors from 1965 to 1971, it was written in a first draft by Iris Wilkinson's friend, Gloria Rawlinson; since Rawlinson's death in 1995 it has been revised and completed by Derek Challis, Wilkinson's son. It includes appalling accounts of hidden pregnancies, harsh experience as a solo mother, dependence on drugs, intimate acquaintance with sexism and poverty, mental breakdown, and a perilous trip to China in wartime. There are deep friendships and hurtful betrayals. Always there is a dedicated and determined commitment to writing. ..."--Jacket.
Savoring God is a comparative study that examines the creative interaction of poetry and theology in two mystical poems central to the Christian and the Hindu traditions, the sixteenth-century Spanish Cántico espiritual (Spiritual Canticle), by Saint John of the Cross, and the Sanskrit R=asa L=il=a (Dance of Love), which originated in the oral tradition. Alongside the poems, Gloria Maité Hernández examines theological commentaries on the texts: the Comentarios, written by Saint John of the Cross on his own poem, and the foundational commentary on the R=asa L=il=a by 'Sr=idhara Sv=ami as well as commentaries by the sixteenth-century theologian J=iva Gosv=ami, from the Gau.d=iya Vai.s.nava school, and other Gau.d=iya theologians. The phrase "savoring God" conveys the Spanish gustar a Dios (to savor God) and the Sanskrit madhura bhakti rasa (the sweet savor of divine love). In the Christian and Hindu commentaries these two concepts describe a way of approaching the poems that is simultaneously vulnerable to the emotions evoked by the poetical imagery and responsive to its theological demands. While "savoring" does not mean the precisely the same thing to the Christian and the Hindu theologians, Hernández demonstrates that both traditions interpret the term to suggest poetry's power in mediating an encounter with the divine.

Dr. Gloria Schrager has written a revealing memoir about her struggle to become a doctor at a time when women physicians were an anomaly. The era she has lived through has been incredibly eventful: she relates how the Great Depression, World War II, the McCarthy Unamerican Activities Committee, the overt bias and harassment that women in the professions had to face, all impacted on her life. But the memoir has a lighter side, recounting some of the adventures and mishaps of medical school, internship, maintaining a successful marriage and raising a family while engaged in the full-time practice of medicine. Both of her sons as well as a niece and grandniece have become physicians, and the book describes some the differences, both good and bad, between the practice of medicine today and how it was practiced over fifty years ago.

Gloria Tomatoe Serobe, née Ndaliso, married Gaur Serobe in 1987, following a six-month courtship. And so began Gloria's 26-year relationship with her mother-in-law, Winnie Serobe. Winnie Serobe was born in Thaba 'Nchu in 1933, in a deeply racialised South Africa. Yet she transcended all the barriers put in place by the South African government, and society at large, to become a nurse, midwife, community builder, social entrepreneur and leader. In the course of her marriage to Andrew Serobe, for 40 years, during which they became parents to five children, she was never only a wife and a mother. This book is Gloria's ode of love, honour and respect to her mother-in-law, whom she referred to as Mama. It brings to life the story of a Winnie Serobe, who we may not read about when we look at the heroes and heroines of this country, but who served those around her every day. She remains memorialised in the hearts and minds of those for whom she fought for the right to be educated; buried with dignity; and provided with the best quality healthcare – particularly for mothers and their unborn and new-born babies. Throughout her remarkable life, Winnie Serobe 'saw', 'heard', and homed some of the most vulnerable, stigmatised, ostracised and perhaps forgotten members of her community. Throughout this life well lived, she nurtured and mentored Gloria as a makoti of the Serobe family. She reframed marriage, family and service for the young Gloria, lessons which Gloria shares in the pages of this book. Gloria Tomatoe Serobe is a founding member and CEO of WIPHOLD and is a leading activist for community upliftment, the empowerment of women, and the sustainable transformation of the South African economic landscape. She has been recognised for her leadership in business and community activism with numerous awards, and a number of honorary degrees.
