Drawn from documents previously not available to scholars and a careful re-reading of traditional sources, this gripping narrative offers fascinating new insight into why Mormons settlers in isolated southern Utah deceived the emigrant party with a promise of safety and then killed the adults and all but seventeen of the youngest children. The Mountain Meadows Massacre stands as one of the darkest events in Mormon history. The body was discovered by the college security guard who stopped three young men, premiere athletes on the Universitys top performing sports team, trying to dispose of the remains. The young men were enrolled in an all male college and the murdered co-ed was the girlfriend of one of the three prima donnas athletes. The young lady was a student at the all girls neighboring college. The sparks begin to fly early when the male institution takes the preliminary position that the young men are presumed innocent and a former alumnus who has become a major national religious figure takes an interest in the case. Also, intentionally conspicuous legal council is hired to represent the athletes and it appears that a male perspective is dominating the early agenda. But the opposite point of view is quickly consolidated by a high profile female administrator from the womens college who can match the passion and intellect of her male counterparts. The City of Atlanta becomes divided in this intellectual and legally charged debate on whos responsible for the murder of Carlita Valencia? Ms. Valencias father is a well-known Atlanta attorney working for the law firm of Mr. Franklin Dillard, the renowned Bay Area legal scholar who lost his daughter two years earlier in the infamous Oakland Hills Vodou Murders case. The individual who solved that mentally challenging case, Detective William Monroe Lincoln, has been hired to help the Atlanta Police Department solve this homicide. The characters involved are sometimes as flamboyant as the rhetoric and the circumstances and Detective Lincoln must concentrate on the facts presented and not on the continuous ebb and flow of the non-material items which seem to constantly obscure his search for the truth. When one of the characters consistently exhibits a behavior of physical foreplay in responding to his questions, the detective brings in his formidable friend Lenny who can match pound for pound any physical threat presented. The case requires Detective Lincolns analytical skills to be at their best in order to help the victims parents bring peace to their lives after losing their precious daughter. The Atlanta Co-Ed Murder once again puts Detective Lincolnin play.

The argument builds to an accountability perspective that utilises work from expressivism, interpretivism, classical liberalism and postmodern theory. In this definitive work, Ernest Glen Wever establishes the evolutionary importance of the reptile ear as the origin of the higher type of auditory apparatus shared by man and the mammals. Tracing the development of the auditory receptor in the living reptiles, he examines the use of a variety of mechanisms and principles of action by that receptor. While some of the material in this book has appeared previously in journal articles, most of it is presented here for the first time. Basing this study on his twenty years of research at Princeton's Auditory Research Laboratories, Professor Wever treats in anatomical and functional detail the auditory mechanism in about 250 species and subspecies of reptiles. The anatomical treatment rests on dissections and histological examinations of the ears in serial section, and portrays the relevant features in drawings that represent particular views of reconstructions. The author evaluates the performance of thesse ears electrophysiologically, in terms of the electrical potentials of the cochlea, paying particular attention to problems of the transmission of vibrations inward to the cochlea and the actions there in stimulating the sensory cells. Professor Wever finds that the cochlea emerged independently from the non-auditory labyrinth in three different vertebrate groups: fishes, amphibians, and reptiles. It was among the reptiles, however, that the vertebrate ear took on a more advanced configuration from which it further evolved along separate lineages in the birds and mammals. Ernest Glen Wever is Eugene Higgins Professor of Psychology Emeritus at Princeton University. Originally published in 1978. Most Wesleyan-Holiness churches started in the US, developing out of the Methodist roots of the nineteenth-century Holiness Movement. The American origins of the Holiness movement have been charted in some depth, but there is currently little detail on how it developed outside of the US. This book seeks to redress this imbalance by giving a history of North American Wesleyan-Holiness churches in Australia, from their establishment in the years following the Second World War, as well as of The Salvation Army, which has nineteenth-century British origins. It traces the way some of these churches moved from marginalised sects to established denominations, while others remained small and isolated. Looking at The Church of God (Anderson), The Church of God (Cleveland), The Church of the Nazarene, The Salvation Army, and The Wesleyan Methodist Church in Australia, the book argues two main points. Firstly, it shows that rather than being American imperialism at work, these religious expressions were a creative partnership between like-minded evangelical Christians from two modern nations sharing a general cultural similarity and set of religious convictions. Secondly, it demonstrates that it was those churches that showed the most willingness to be theologically flexible, even dialling down some of their Wesleyan distinctiveness, that had the most success. This is the first book to chart the fascinating development of Holiness churches in Australia. As such, it will be of keen interest to scholars of Wesleyans and Methodists, as well as religious history and the sociology of religion more generally.
