First published in 1999, this book contains the findings of an exploratory study using in-depth interviews on parenting and the dynamics of Hong Kong Chinese stepfamilies. The stepfamily is a topic which is in lack of local research in Hong Kong, but is an emerging family structure which has increasing need for professional intervention. This study began as a result of the researcher’s concern about the soaring number of divorces and broken families in Hong Kong and her curiosity to uncover the untold stories of stepfamilies. The literature review, presentation and thematic analysis of the findings of this study will increase the readers knowledge and understanding of stepfamilies in contexts which are different from Western societies. This book unveils the perceptions and life experiences of the stepmothers, social workers and teachers attitudes towards stepfamilies and the parenting behaviours of stepfamilies in Hong Kong. The author has reflectively analyzed the complex interplay between the social attitudes, cultural stereotyping of stepfamilies influenced by Chinese traditional values, aspirations towards marriage and marital relationships, parental expectations and parent-child relationships, ideology and policy issues affecting professional intervention.

This all came about because of a break down and the feeling of total helplessness that came over me. The light bulb came on in my head, I would buy a radio. That would be the answer to all my problems. As it worked itself out, it was a whole lot of peoples answer as well. A travelers dream. Help was as close as the hearing range of a C.B. Radio. Or just friendly conversation to help the driver get through my strip of the road. We start talking as strangers and ended up as friends. The wide open desert didn't seem so menacing as long as you knew there was a radio there. Whether it was standing cattle or hogs,hanging meat or dry goods, the big rig eighteen wheel driver wanted to know there was a radio he could depend on. It also gave me peace of mind whenever we were out on the highway. Hoping we didn't have another Parley's canyon. There were funny times, happy times, and very sad times.

Acclaimed upon publication as a necessary supplement to the work of Seligman and Seidman, it is still an essential work. Erwin R. Griswald was among the first to recognize this book's value. In the Harvard Law Review he wrote "[t]here is very little in this book that will help a lawyer win a case...[y]et there is much of practical value, a clear picture of the forest which might otherwise escape the lawyer bent on dissecting the trees." He predicted correctly that "[t]here is a mass of fact and comment that will make the book a standard work of reference for many a year to come" (53:1218).

She discusses the following challenges during her life: her speech defect, loss of her first child, becoming a teacher, her son's involvement with drugs, her Mom's Alzheimer's, and her daughter's brain surgery. Before the death of her first child, she believed God planned and controlled everything in one's life. However, to her God is loving and caring not a punishing God or one to fear. Why would God take her first baby away from her when he was just two weeks old. After much grieving and soul searching, she changed her philosophy to although God is all powerful, he chooses not to use that power to interfere with nature. God might have a plan for your life. However, everything that happens to you is not God's plan or fault for he allows nature to exist as he created the world. In other words, illnesses and health problems are just a part of our world. God created a beautiful world but it is not perfect because God made people human not perfect. However, God is always there to help you through difficult times. Wiley's children invovement with drugs introduced her to Al-Anon. There she learned that worry is optional and one can experience negativity or anger without becoming negative or angry. She discovered that detachment is not caring less but caring more for your own serenity. She found out that no situation is too difficult to be bettered or any problem too great to be lessened. Wiley also writes about her travels to Virgin Islands, Tahiti, Hawaii, out West, and Alaska. Journaling has become very important to Wiley. She includes ponder questions at the end of each chapter to challenge her readers to think about the meaning of life, journal about their own lives, and grow as individuals.
