This memoir is the story of my childhood and teen years. It begins when I was very young with my parents' divorce, then goes on to living with a spiteful and unloving stepmother, World War II, my father being wounded, the fear of the approaching Russian front, our fleeing from them and bombings. After the end of war, as we tried to make our way back home, I was terrified of the Russian soldiers and war prisoners who roamed our countryside. I feared my father would be shot or imprisoned. I listened to women screaming for help while being raped. I endured the sorrow of losing my beloved father, followed by living with my stepmother's cruelty. My agony ended with the happy reunion with my real mother, my sister, Oma my loving grandmother, and family. After WWII ended, my family and I lived behind the "Iron Curtain" in East Germany under the Russian occupation Stalin's "Iron Fist." His communist regime imposed such strict isolation and extreme hunger on us that in June of 1953 the citizens of East Germany waged an unsuccessful uprising to gain freedom from Russia and communism. Finally, in the fall of 1953, when I was eighteen, we escaped to West Germany. These are the memories of my childhood and teen years.

I started my book with introducing my grandparents and parents, and continued with anecdotes from my childhood. I remember the depression, people were very poor, as no work was available. I saw ex-soldiers, who had lost limbs in the war, begging in the street. Father applied for a new job, he was one of the lucky ones who could earn money to keep us comfortable. We moved to Dueneberg near Hamburg in 1929. I started school that year at the age of six. My brother Dieter was born 1931. Hitler was elected into power in January 1933. Immediate political and economical changes took place At the age of nearly 15, I went to a Home Economic Boarding School in the Harz Mountains until 1938. The following year, summer 1939 we moved to Leipzig. Father had applied for an even better paid job. War started in September 1939. Every young person had to do one year's unpaid service (only pocket money) working for families with children or on farms. No-one could start a job before doing this. I was lucky and had only 6 months left to do after leaving the boarding school, as we had a children's holiday home attached to the school and worked there on occasions. In my book are many anecdotes from before, during and after the war. In 1940 I started work as a telex operator in the Leipzig Telegraph Office and in November 1944 I started to work for Heinkel's Aeroplane's factory, again doing telex work. Mother thought I should better myself with more pay and having my own office. I wished that I had never left the Post Office. It became a nightmare. I met slave workers from Auschwitz, sent letters for them to their home towns. I had been watched by the Gestapo for a while. Everyone was always under suspicion. A letter from the Poles had been found in my valet and it was on 29.January 1945 that I was arrested and was taken by an SS man by train to a Labour Camp. There everyone, 400 girls from all over Europe, were kept, verbically abused, beaten and left to die without any medicines. I survived after being very ill with high fever and was released on 4 April 1945 looking like a skeleton. Father had to fight against the approaching Americans. From 400 men only 4 survived. Germany was divided and we had to live under Russian occupation and were starving. Father was taken by the Russians to the vicinity of Moscow, with others, where they were indoctrinated with Communism. I escaped to West-Germany in summer 1947 and had to go to an assembly camp and worked then for British Service families. Worked as a nanny and loved it. I met a British Service man, Patrick, he came from Bristol. In October 1953 we were married in Hengrove-Bristol. Read more at www.lucarinfo.com/giselacoo.

Thanks to unprecedented access to thousands of files of the Irish Department of Justice (all still officially closed) as well as extensive archive research in Ireland, Germany, England, Austria as well as the US and numerous interviews it is possible for the first time to give an almost complete overview of how many people came, how they contributed to Ireland, how this fits in with the history of migration to Ireland and what can be learned from it. While Exile studies are a well-developed research area and have benefited from the work of research centres and archives in Germany, Austria, Great Britain and the USA (Frankfurt/M, Leipzig, Hamburg, Berlin, Innsbruck, Graz, Vienna, London and SUNY Albany and the Leo Baeck Institutes), Ireland was long neglected in this regard. Instead of the usual narrative of "no one was let in" or "only a handful came to Ireland" the authors identified more than 300 refugees through interviews and intensive research in Irish, German and Austrian archives. German-speaking exiles were the first main group of immigrants that came to the young Irish Free State from 1933 onwards and they had a considerable impact on academic, industrial and religious developments in Ireland.

The endometrium differs from all other tissues of the body in that it rhythmically changes its structure and function. For many years the meaning of these changes remained puzzling and obscure. At about the turn of the century some investi gators held the physiological fluctuations of the menstrual cycle to be inflamma tory changes. Later, when stricter criteria for the pathology of the endometrium were applied, morphologists misinterpreted pathological fluctuations in the cycle either as physiological variations, or they overlooked them entirely. Today as previously the pathologist is often confronted with the dilemma that he is unable to adequately diagnose the endometrium merely from the structural changes. Accordingly, the gynecologist finds the pathological report of little value. In like manner, if the clinical information given the pathologist is incomplete, then he cannot form a clear notion of the clinical problem. Although the detection of focal lesions of the endometrium is important, of much greater consequence is the recognition of functional (hormonally controlled) variations and their cyclic course, for it is from these that the clinician is guided in deciding what therapy he should use. The ability to detect such functional changes requires not only that the morphologist possess a thorough knowledge of the physiological and pathological anatomy of the endometrium but also that he receive exact information about the patient's menstrual history and have in sight into clinical problems.

Parables were used by Jesus to reveal to us the kingdom of God and to move us from being bystanders to active recipients of God's work of revelation. However, parables are constantly at risk of being buried as 'mummies of prose', as George MacDonaldputs it. We become so familiar with the language of Scripture that Jesus' parables no longer work on us in this revelatory and transforming way. George MacDonald, the Victorian poet and theologian, observed this very process at work in Victorian society. It was a culture saturated with Christian jargon but often devoid of a profound understanding of the gospel for its own time and culture. The language of Scripture no longer penetrated people's hearts, imaginations, and attitudes; it no longer transformed people's lives. MacDonald, called to be a pastor, turned a story and more specifically the 'parabolic' as a means of spiritual awakening. He created fictive worlds in which the language of Jesus would find a new home and regain its revelatory power for his particular Victorian audience.

Also covered are religious practices like feasts and beliefs like metempsychosis. The heart of the book is an analysis of the numerous Alawi sanctuaries. Long-term field research enabled the authors to document a vital, highly mobile practice of saint veneration performed at continuously changing sacred places. Besides a catalogue of nearly 200 shrines and several detailed case-studies there are chapters on the age and origins of the sacred places, the rites performed there, and the structure of the pilgrims. A major aim of the study is to present the local Alawi saint veneration in a broader Islamic context by describing the "sacred landscape", analyzing current changes and tendencies, and discussing the paramount role of women in the practice of saint veneration and in the perceived sacredness of the holy places.

Nach einer Einführung in die Anwendungsbereiche der gynäkologischen Vitalzytologie verhelfen technische Erläuterungen zur präzisen Handhabung der Methode und des Phasenkontrastmikroskops. Der anschlie€ende Textteil vermittelt eine straff gegliederte Zusammenfassung der wesentlichen Erkennungsmerkmale der Einzelzellen und des Gesamtzellbildes unter physiologischer hormoneller Stimulation und deren endogen oder iatrogen ausgelösten Abweichungen, unter bakterieller Besiedelung und im Laufe der Karzinogenese. Es folgen Beschreibungen von Nebenbefunden, sekundären Zellveränderungen und Artefakten. In gleicher Reihenfolge sind im angeschlossenen Bildteil 143 meist gro€formatige Mikroskopaufnahmen typischer Zellen und Zellverbände dargestellt. This atlas provides a comprehensive overview of the diagnostic value of phase-contrast microscopy in the cytologic examination of smears taken in the gynecological practice. The range of applications and methods are fully described. The text summarizes distinguishing factors of single cell and the overall clinical picture. The atlas section contains large-format photomicrographs of cells and cell clusters.
