In this important volume, major events and personalities of 20th century physics are portrayed through recollections and historiographical works of one of the most prominent figures of European science. A former student of Enrico Fermi, and a leading personality of physical research and science policy in postwar Italy, Edoardo Amaldi devoted part of his career to documenting, both as witness and as historian, some significant moments of 20th century science. The focus of the book is on the European scene, ranging from nuclear research in Rome in the 1930s to particle physics at CERN, and includes biographies of physicists such as Ettore Majorana, Bruno Touschek and Fritz Houtermans.Edoardo Amaldi (Carpaneto, 1908 - Roma, 1989) was one of the leading figures in twentieth century Italian science. He was conferred his degree in physics at Rome University in 1929 and played an active role (as a member of the team of young physicists known as ?the boys of via Panisperna?) in the fundamental research on artificial induced radioactivity and the properties of neutrons, which won the group's leader Enrico Fermi the Nobel Prize for physics in 1938. Following Fermi's departure for the United States in 1938 and the disruption of the original group, Amaldi took upon himself the task of reorganising the research in physics in the difficult situation of post-war Italy. His own research went from nuclear physics to cosmic ray physics, elementary particles and, in later years, gravitational waves. Active research was for him always coupled to a direct involvement as a statesman of science and an organiser: he was the leading figure in the establishment of INFN (National Institute for Nuclear Physics) and has played a major role, as spokesman of the Italian scientific community, in the creation of CERN, the large European laboratory for high energy physics. He also actively supported the formation of a similar trans-national joint venture in space science, which gave birth to the European Space Agency. In these and several other scientific organisations, he was often entrusted with directive responsibilities. In his later years, he developed a keen interest in the history of his discipline. This gave rise to a rich production of historiographic material, of which a significant sample is collected in this volume.

One in six people in the US are currently taking psychotropic drugs. In 80% of cases, the medication is taken for long-term use and predominantly involves new-generation antidepressants, such as SSRIs (e.g. paroxetine) and SNRIs (e.g. venlafaxine). When patients want to stop taking these drugs and/or their physicians decide it is time for them to stop, substantial problems often can ensue. About 50% of patients experience withdrawal symptoms that do not necessarily subside after a few days or weeks and may be severe and debilitating. Physicians often do not know what to do in these situations. As a result, patients experiencing the anguish and mental pain of withdrawal syndromes are unlikely to receive appropriate medical attention. Discontinuing antidepressants is a highly technical challenge that requires specific strategies. This handbook guides clinicians through each clinical step (assessment; what the counter-indications would be for stopping or continuing; and how discontinuation can best be achieved). It provides a detailed account of the assessment and management strategies, with many case illustrations and clinical examples, drawing from the literature that is available and the extensive personal experience of the author.

The history of modernism has generally been written as a story of artists and their creations alongside the collectors, gallerists, and curators who supported them. This is especially true of Cubism, where the received narrative centers on a tightly circumscribed group of artists and agents connected to the dealer Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler. Léonce Rosenberg’s Cubism shakes up the canon, revealing its artificial nature and pointing to a different, more inclusive understanding of the development of Cubism. Kahnweiler’s Cubism was narrowly focused. In contrast, Giovanni Casini shows us, the influential art dealer Léonce Rosenberg bought virtually any piece that could be labeled “Cubist” and proposed a radically different understanding of the movement. At Rosenberg’s Galerie L’Effort Moderne in Paris, artists such as Joseph Csáky, Auguste Herbin, Jean Metzinger, Diego Rivera, Gino Severini, and Georges Valmier were accorded the same treatment as Pablo Picasso or Georges Braque. In this book, Casini considers Rosenberg’s contribution to the history of Cubism, reflecting on the ways in which artistic movements are manufactured—and interpretive paradigms adopted. Deftly weaving biography with a scholarly analysis built on extensive archival research, Léonce Rosenberg’s Cubism is a fresh look at the history of interwar modernism and the definitive study of a figure who has been unjustly sidelined in the history of art. A questo volume che raccoglie scritti degli anni 1962-1968, l'autore ha ritenuto opportuno premettere una Presentazione scritta nel 2013. In effetti quegli anni sono stati cruciali per molti aspetti della storia e cultura italiana, ma sono certamente anni remoti e le tematiche allora discusse vanno ridestate. Questi scritti sono poi eterogenei sia nel contenuto che nella forma che nello stile. Ma il titolo contiene già un orientamento sul percorso filosofico delineato nella Presentazione, in cui si dichiarano anche le incertezze dell'autore in quegli anni di formazione, nei quali egli era politicamente attivo sul versante dell'"operaismo". Nel ripubblicare questi testi l'autore manifesta la convinzione di una relativa attualità dei dibattiti di allora, sia per ciò che concerne l'opera di Lukàcs, sia per ciò che concerne la polemica contro l'heideggerismo dilagante nella cultura italiana, polemica che è rimasta una costante sottintesa di tutta l'opera del filosofo.
