In Savage Mind to Savage Machine, Ginger Nolan uncovers an enduring relationship between “the savage” and the development of technology and its wide-ranging impact on society, including in the fields of architecture and urbanism, the industrial arts, and digital design. Nolan focuses on the relationship between the applied arts and the structuralist social sciences, proposing that the late-nineteenth-century rise of Freudian psychology, ethnology, and structuralist linguistics offered innovations and new opportunities in studying human cognition. She looks at institutions ranging from the Public Industrial Arts School of Philadelphia and the Weimar Bauhaus to the MIT Media Lab and the Centre Mondial Informatique, revealing a persistent theme of twentieth-century design: to supplant language with more subliminal, aesthetic modes of communication, thereby inculcating a deep intimacy between human habit and new technologies of production, communication, and consumption. This book’s ultimate critique is of the development of the ergonomics of the spirit—the design of the human cognitive apparatus in relation to new aesthetic technologies. Nolan sees these ergonomics as a means of depoliticizing societies through aesthetic technologies intended to seamlessly integrate humans into the programs of capitalist modernity. Revising key modernist design narratives, Savage Mind to Savage Machine provides a deep historical foundation for understanding our contemporary world.

Some days can seem just ordinary. We awaken at a designated time with a head full of tasks, have-to and what ifs. We might check our phones and devices, getting info for the day that ranges from the weather, stocks, politics, and messages to “Alexa, turn on the coffee pot.” Somehow, this probable routine has become normal. Somehow, this may be how we prepare for an ordinary day with the intent that we might be ready and safe to greet the day with some level of pleasure and success. All this actually sounds reasonable. However, it only takes one traffic jam one late bus, one unexpected phone call, one breaking news alert, and this seemingly reliable system can easily crumble into dust carrying all positive goals and expectations with it. We would falter into distractions, upsets, frustrations and fatigue before noon, because of “something” or “someone” that knocks us off our purposed day and all without warning. Uncertainty bubbles up everywhere. Local and global news are filled with violence and upheaval on a regular basis. We are bombarded by the media on all our tech devices, and we now are even further conflicted with what has been phrased “Fake news.” We have access 24/7 to split-second, ongoing information, yet we don’t really know what is valid and what isn’t. We may feel the media, government, philosophies, dreams, goals and faith have all failed us. Whom or what can we trust? We do our best to analyze, understand the rapid pace of present lives, and somewhere deep inside we perhaps all want similar goals. We desire peace, prosperity, healthy bodies and relationships, and the opportunity to make some dreams come true personally and professionally. It all sounds reasonable. However, the biggest challenge may be how to bridge what we desire from inside our hearts with a world outside that feels often unsafe, biased and unfair. If we have ever tried to make clear sense of our lives, we probably have said, or even shouted, “Where are you, Lord?” Regardless of the mood we were in, asking or praying this plea may have mostly resulted in more quiet tears and confusion. I say this from my own experience. In fact, this missive is the result of my own confusion, pain and earnest desire to know the truth of God on a daily basis. I used one guiding Light based on one single truth: “Seek first the Kingdom of God, and all things will be given to you as well.” (Matthew 6:33) I wanted to know and feel a reliable relationship with God that was not slanted by my ego needs or imagination. I wanted to trust His truth, and then be guided to live with a practical spirituality that was rooted in joy, love, peace and wisdom that could serve everyone. This book is my personal encounter. It is not meant to be blindly accepted or rejected only shared. Each reader is encouraged to find his/her own way, so to speak. These pages are meant to provide a practical way to hear the inner Voice that is within all of us and to learn how to trust it and follow it. This inner Voice is always a gentle whisper of love and peace. It is steady and unwavering. It is reliable. It is permanent.

But sometimes life takes away our ability to choose. Sometimes…things aren’t in your control. Sometimes, it hurts to be selfless. My only hope is that when it comes time to choose, I get it right. Cultural modernity has habitually been defined as a focus on the means of representation themselves, as opposed to art that imitates external reality or expresses its maker's inner life. The crucial moment is usually considered the emergence of Edouard Manet in mid-nineteenth-century France, and the features of French developments have been seen as defining terms in the theory of modernity. However, recent art and cultural history have often spoken of plural modernities, distinct from the pattern set in France. For the first time, this study in cultural history explores how Spanish culture took a radical turn toward the medium of representation itself in the 1850s and early 1860s. It argues that this happened in a way that is critically at odds with many fundamental theoretical suppositions about modernity.

This book revisits the claim that a key dimension of cultural modernity – understood as a turn to the autonomy of the signs and the erasure of the 'face of man' - arose in the mid-nineteenth century. It presents an alternative to that obsession, focusing instead on the aesthetic appreciation of forms through which connections are realised across place and time. The book is one of few to offer a comparative approach to numerous major writers and artists of this period over diverse countries. Specifically, the comparative approach overcomes the constitutively ambiguous relation between the modern and the Hispanic. The Hispanic is often imagined as at once foundational for and excluded from the modern world. Its reincorporation into the story of the mid-century unsettles the notion of modernity. The book offers instead an experiment in writing, tracing commonalities across place and time, and drawing on mid-century expressions of such likenesses.
