As he shares the history of this French horticultural elite, he provides an informal treatise on roses, their place in history, and their development under floriculture from a simple wild plant to the extravagantly beautiful and complex blooms of today. Meilland takes us into the greenhouses that serve as laboratories and demonstrates how new roses are created, how from a bed of 2,500 seedlings, the result of cross-breeding, there may be only one or two roses selected for propagation and sale. He also permits us a view inside the management and organization of the worldwide rose establishment. Even while dealing with commerce on such a large scale, he doesn't lose sight of the human element: he presents an engaging picture of his grandparents and parents as they became France's premier rose growers through their persistent hard work. The Pilgrims who settled America brought rose bushes with them aboard the Mayflower, and Meilland concludes his book with a chapter of practical advice for those who are following in their floricultural footsteps. In addition, the translators have updated, expanded, and adapted for American rose growers the original section on diseases and pesticides.

Its authors challenge the usual assumption that organized financial markets—and hence the opportunity for economic growth—did not emerge outside of England and the Netherlands until the nineteenth century. Drawing on innovative research, the authors show that as early as the Old Regime, financial intermediaries in France were mobilizing a great tide of capital and arranging thousands of loans between borrowers and lenders. The implications for historians and economists are substantial. The role of notaries operating in Paris that Priceless Markets uncovers has never before been recognized. In the wake of this pathbreaking new study, historians will also have to rethink the origins of the French Revolution. As the authors show, the crisis of 1787-88 did not simply ignite revolt; it was intimately bound up in an economic struggle that reached far back into the eighteenth century, and continued well into the 1800s.

They lament the lack of “serious play” going on in Canada’s public administration today and map some possible escape plans. They look to a more participatory governance model – “open source” governing or “small g” governance – as a way to liberate our public service from antiquated styles and systems of governing. In their recognizably rebellious style, Hubbard and Paquet demand that public administration scholars and senior level bureaucrats pull their heads out of the sand and confront the problems of the current system and develop a new system that can address the needs of Canada today.
