Nino Lenos family was the first generation that immigrated to America for the American dream. He was a Sicilian fisherman by trade. On December 23, 1965, they went and lived in Red Hook section of Brooklyn, New York, where most of the Sicilian fishermen immigrants came to live and work in the navy yards docks. Nino, a man with principles and honor, and his son, Gino, both stood firm against all challenges in the new land of America. In 1966, Gino, at the age of twelve, entered the junior high school in Brooklyn. He had to deal with a multitude of issues: not knowing how to speak English and being bullied by kids from other ethnicities. He daily got into fights against bullies. Different ethnic street gangs and groups were going to that school. Gino never finished junior high school. Nino moved his family to Glendale, Queens, New York, and opened a pizza store for a better life for his family. There Nino found white Irish, Germans, street gangs, and the American mafia. Gino worked in the familys pizzeria, met Maria, and fell in love. He later got Maria pregnant, and they got married. After that, Gino began to have a conflict with Marias uncle, Fat Joe Massa, an American gangster. Years later, Joe moved up to become the boss of the Bonanno crime family. Gino overcomes treachery and deceit from this so-called American mafia uncle who is only related to him through his marriage with Maria. Gino survived getting two gunshot wounds that nearly stole his life as his wife Maria was due in August to give birth to their first baby! Gino believed in his fathers principles and honor.

Classical sociology considered money as central to the functioning of modern society, relatingit to a progressive expansion of instrumental rationality and the emergence of weaker social ties.Modern money, the universal equivalent described by Simmel, facilitates theexchange of goods and values by providing a single unit of account. This “frees” people and thingsfrom traditional social ties and makes them free to “sell” their work and trade goods on markets thatincreasingly erode national borders. Modern money thus frees the individual from traditional socialties and facilitates the creation of ever larger and more inter-connected markets. Sardex money, onthe other hand, seems to work in the opposite direction: the weak social ties of ordinary economictransactions are replaced by strong ones, characterised by a high level of reciprocity and by an ethical code. Furthermore the movement of goods is restricted to the regional level and much isdone to promote economic exchanges between member companies.

Il convegno, dal titolo Kosmos nel XXI Secolo, dedicato alla celebrazione dei 250 anni dalla nascita di Alexander von Humboldt, si è proposto come una rivisitazione in chiave attuale dell'ultimo lavoro di Humboldt e suo testamento spirituale Kosmos – Entwurf einer physischen Weltbeschreibung. Partendo dalla immagine integrata e coerente del cosmo proposta da Humboldt, il convegno si è delineato come una vivace occasione di dibattito interdisciplinare su questioni di interesse globale e di grande attualità. Temi inerenti al fabbisogno energetico, alla biodiversità, ai viaggi, alla comunicazione, alle migrazioni, alla poesia, alla storia e alla geografia sono stati affrontati con interesse e spirito costruttivo tra discipline scientifiche e umanistiche nel suggestivo contesto di Villa Vigoni e del lago di Como. Il convegno, sostenuto dalla fondazione tedesca Alexander von Humboldt, è stato aperto e concluso dai rappresentanti istituzionali della Repubblica Federale di Germania ed ha avuto una ampia partecipazione nazionale ed internazionale. Dieser Sammelband enthält die Beiträge zur nationalen Konferenz der italienischen Alexander von Humboldt Gesellschaft, die vom 11. bis 14. April 2019 im Deutsch-Italienischen Zentrum für Europäischen Dialog Villa Vigoni in Loveno di Menaggio (Como) stattfand. Die Konferenz mit dem Titel Kosmos im XXI. Jahrhundert widmete sich der 250 Jahr-Feier des Geburtstags Alexander von Humboldts und bot somit einen aktuellen Blick auf Humboldts letztes Werk und sein geistiges Erbe: Kosmos – Entwurf einer physischen Weltbeschreibung. Ausgehend von Humboldts Bild des Kosmos, bot die Konferenz eine lebendige Gelegenheit für eine interdisziplinäre Debatte über Fragen von globalem und aktuellem Interesse. Fragen der Energienachfrage, Biodiversität, Reisen, Kommunikation und Migration, Poesie und Geschichte sowie Geographie wurden behandelt und in einem interessanten und konstruktiven Vergleich zwischen den Disziplinen im wissenschaftlich und humanistisch Kontext von Villa Vigoni diskutiert.
