The idea of personalizable software is fashionable today. I explored it in a number of software prototypes a decade or two earlier. The perspectives mechanism in Hermes, my dissertation software system, was an initial major initiative in this direction. WebNet was a follow-up system to integrate the perspective mechanism into discussion-forum collaboration software. Subsequent systems explored personalization mechanisms in systems for work and for learning, including TCA for teachers developing and sharing curriculum and systems for automated critics in design systems or reviewers of journal articles. In each case, the mechanisms were intended to support users to view and discuss materials from their personal perspectives and to share those views with others to encourage building group perspectives. The volume is organized in terms of essays on (a) structured hypermedia, (b) personalizable software, (c) software perspectives and (d) applications to health care, education and publishing.

In the 1930s, Dr Adolf Mahr was head of the National Museum of Ireland, where he earned the title 'the father of Irish archaeology'. He was also the head of the Nazi Party in Ireland, and was dubbed 'Dublin Nazi No. 1'. Under pressure from Irish and British military intelligence, he left for Germany shortly before the outbreak of war in 1939, never to return. To this day, he is considered in some circles to have been a spy who used his position at the museum to help prepare Germany's invasion plan of Ireland. During the war, he became director of Irland-Redaktion, the German propaganda radio service that broadcast into neutral Ireland. He was later arrested and tortured by the British, and upon his release tried to return to Ireland, but to no avail. He remains one of the most controversial figures in twentieth-century Irish history.

When I decided to travel to many parts of the world I was at the enviable stage of life where I had finished college, completed my military commitment and was still unmarried. Thus, I planned to spend a significant amount of time in as many countries as I could. My intention was to meet average citizens and live their lifestyle while with them. Of course, this would require learning their language to a conversational degree for which we residents of the USA have a poor reputation. High school French and college German gave me a start and I would learn other languages as I went thanks to the patience of so many new friends. This approach led me to being welcomed into numerous families everywhere I went. Thus, did I have the extraordinary privilege of becoming part of so many families wherein I would learn their culture from the most valid source. When I now think back to this incredible journey I am humbled by the open hospitality of so many new friends who often had little to spare, but shared it with joy and pleasure. For those who might not have the privilege that I had, I wish to attempt to convey the wonder of this world journey through this book. I invite the reader to share my varied adventures with our fellow citizens of this beautiful planet. Enjoy.

A wonderful bilingual 'flipper' book for World Book Day 2012. A grizzly bear walked all the way from the zoo to my front door and not a single person noticed him. He knocked on the front door three times, loud knocks that shook the house. Nearly everyone in my class had a pet of some sort. Lots of them had dogs, and a fair few had cats, budgies and goldfish. Max Wallace had a hamster and Adam O'Hara had a tortoise which he claimed was sixty years old, though I'm pretty sure he was exaggerating. Sam Tripp had a small lizard and a pet rabbit, which was a strange combination.
