This commentary on Deuteronomy meets and exceeds the high standards of the Old Testament Library series. It provides one of the most sophisticated explanations to date of the compositional process that produced Deuteronomy, presenting that process as a combination of large-scale redactional activity and "micro-redaction." The commentary is also attentive to the historical background of Deuteronomy's origins in the reigns of Manasseh and Josiah. The fresh translation that heads each section is followed by insightful linguistic comments that highlight Deuteronomy's famous homiletical and didactic style. Since the beginning, holy war has been viewed as a 'sacred institution' and a 'cultic act of religious community' by the people of Israel. Appearing here in English for the first time, Gerhard von Rad has provided a definitive study of the theory of holy war and its development throughout biblical history. Von Rad gives a definitive and articulate exposition of a typically disturbing theme within the Old Testament, arguing that holy war is not only Yahweh acting alone, but inspired Israelites, who because they envisioned God fighting on their behalf, felt obligated and inspired to fight even more fervently.
In this new edition of Gerhard von Rad's classic work on the Moses traditions, the reader is provided with a more polished text, cross-references to von Rad's other works, an updated bibliography, Scripture index, and a new foreword by Walter Brueggemann. A German Lutheran pastor, University professor and a prolific Old Testament scholar, Gerhard von Rad sought a revival of Old Testament appreciation from a readership disheartened by two world wars. Hanson brings this important work to the present generation in the hopes of provoking the same reaction.
Essential books for the serious student of the Old Testament.... It is scarcely possible to read von Rad without having the understanding and enjoyment of the Old Testament greatly increased. No serious student of the Bible at the level of theological student or minister can afford not to read him' (Theology). 'A work of commanding range and penetration. . . . The skilful translation has made von Flad's book accessible to a greatly enlarged circle of readers. This, the most distinctive of modern Old Testament Theologies, has already exercised and will continue to exercise a profound influence on the study of the Old Testament' (The Expository Times). Until his death, Gerhard von Rad was Professor of Old Testament in the University of Heidelberg. The companion to this volume is Vol 1: The Theology of Israel's Historical Traditions.

This classic text, the last major work by the great Hebrew Bible scholar Gerhard von Rad, has long been unavailable in North America. It is now being reissued in paperback from to satisfy the continuing demand for copies of the book. In brief, the subject of von Rad's study of Hebrew wisdom is Israel's willingness to ground faith in encounter with the world as the creation of God. Those familiar with the author's Old Testament Theology will recall how he identified two great watersheds in the history of Israel's thought. The first was the rise of the prophetic movement, which occasioned a radical reinterpretation of Israel's religious traditions as expressed in the earliest creedal formulations found in the Pentateuch. The second watershed, which preceded the prophetic movement and was a basically different assessment of Israel's relation to Yahweh, was achieved by wisdom teachers at the start of the monarchy. This book studies this first and somewhat novel break with Israel's older sacral traditions. Von Rad bases the study on a wide range of literary materials principally concerned with the books of Proverbs, Job, Ecclesiastes, and the Wisdom of Ben Sirach. "No finer introduction to the fundamental theological questions raised by the wisdom literature of Israel is available." Theology Today Gerhard von Rad was for many years Professor of Old Testament at the University of Heidelberg.
This book makes available to English-speaking students a work that in the original German has achieved the status of a theological classic. This revised edition contains the extensive changes prepared by the author before his death. The introduction has been largely rewritten and the early chapters of the commentary have been reworked with equal thoroughness. Parts 1 and 2 have been entirely reset, and minor alterations have been made in part 3. Professor von Rad has utilized the results of literary criticism and form criticism in producing a commentary that is exegetical, historical, and above all, theological. In every phase of the panoramic pageant the reader sees the God of Israel reaffirming the terms of his covenant and working out his great historical purposes in spite of, and even through, the disobedient acts of willful, headstrong men. - Jacket flap.

That we might find support in the faith and overcome the present temptation to apostasy, schism, and resignation, but at the same time not succumb to the danger of overestimating ourselves and relying on our own activity instead of on grace—that is the goal of the present book. –from the Introduction "You shall know the truth," Jesus said, "and the truth will make you free" (Jn 8:32). Such is the liberating power of truth. In this book, Gerhard Cardinal Müller, former head of the Vatican's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, unabashedly defends the truth of salvation taught by Christ and the Roman Catholic Church. He discusses how Catholic teaching addresses present-day crises in the Church and in the world. This book also includes the cardinal's recently released Manifesto of Faith. Relying heavily on The Catechism of the Catholic Church, it clarifies certain Church doctrines that have lately seemed to be in doubt.
The English translation of the three-volume Exegetisches Wrterbuch zum Neuen Testament, this monumental work by an ecumenical group of scholars is first of all a complete English dictionary of New Testament Greek. Going beyond that, however EDNT also serves as a guide to the usage of every New Testament word in its various contexts, and it makes a significant contribution to New Testament exegesis and theology. EDNT's thorough, lengthy discussions of more significant words and its grouping of words related by root and meaning (with alphabetical cross-references) distinguish it from simpler Greek-English lexicons. Advancing the discussion of the Theological Dictionary of the Old Testament, EDNT summarizes more recent treatments of numerous questions in New Testament study and takes into consideration newer viewpoints of linguistics.
In this book, which covers all of Jesus’ parables, award-winning author Gerhard Lohfink takes a closer look at the origins of each one—its shape, its realistic details, but most of all its original message and the situation into which it was once spoken. Jesus’ parables speak in bold images of the kingdom of God, making it present to us as they reveal something of the mystery of his own person. Lohfink also offers a review of some of the scholarship in this area—as this topic has sustained research on Jesus since the first telling of these stories—but not for the purposes of debate. His reflections interpret the forty parables and show how they speak of the coming of the reign of God, lead us to Jesus, and reveal the mystery of Jesus himself.
An explosion of scholarly treatments of the book of Amos leaves one wondering: What do we know for sure about the prophet, his time, and his writing? Gerhard Hasel synthesizes the latest rethinking of the prophet’s vocation, background, purpose, themes, and motifs to explain why Amos is “a microcosm for the study of all the prophetic writings of the Old Testament.” The most extensive bibliography on Amos ever compiled enables further study.
In an atmosphere of growing skepticism and discouragement, what hope has theology for the future, and what sources might deliver that hope? In this astute analysis of Protestant theology today, Gerhard Sauter sets himself to help theology answer critical questions and accomplish crucial tasks in order to move forward with hope. Protestant Theology at the Crossroads examines contextual theology, in which particular cultural heritages, race and gender, economic conditions, and the structure of social life inform the teachings of the faith rather than vice versa. How, for example, do we approach the crisis in American self-understanding caused by terrorism? Do changes in European politics alter our theological perceptions? Sauter argues that dogmatics -- properly understood as the process of theological reasoning that supports the life of the church -- can and should be used as the tool to save theology. Dogmatics, he says, can break through pious isolationism and converge with genuine public theology, leading to the church's understanding of its own essence.
