Such placodes also give rise to sensory neurons that transmit information to the brain as well as to many neurosecretory cells. This book focuses on the development of sensory and neurosecretory cell types from cranial placodes by introducing the vertebrate head with its sense organs and neurosecretory organs and providing an overview of the various cranial placodes and their derivatives, including evidence of common embryonic primordia. The risk reduction of an international portfolio can be achieved because the correlations between international asset markets are rather low compared to a portfolio which entirely consists of national securities. Hence, international investment strategies are superior compared to strategies which invest solely in a local market since they are able to generate a greater return for a certain risk, or less risk for a given return. Beside the advantages of international diversification, the investment in other currencies bears an additional uncertainty that arises through foreign exchange rate fluctuations. However, the development of the exchange rate is not solely a one-sided downside risk; it is also a chance of a higher return since the movement can be in favor of a position. In other words, exchange rate changes have different effects on investors of different currencies. Even if the domestic return is much lower than in other countries, it might be the case that an investment in another state will result in a lower return because of the exchange rate development. Therefore, the residence and the therewith-associated currency of an investor is crucial for the result of an international diversified portfolio. In order to analyze the two risk drivers of an international diversified portfolio separately, the results of the investment strategies are calculated in two ways - with and without the exchange rate development. This method allows evaluating whether exchange rate movements are dispensable or if currency fluctuations are significant for international equity portfolios and therefore the exchange rate risk should be hedged. The choice of the investment strategy should be compatible with the needs, the expectations and the personality of an investor. Whereas most properties, e.g., the electrical, magnetic, and optical properties, are dealt with in the usual manner, the results of studies of the atom and ion emission had to be presented in a revised form, comprising not only the most recent data but having in mind also the corresponding data for tungsten, which will be represented in a supplement volume now in preparation. The various modes of electron emission have also been studied in great detail. Many more pages (exactly 226 pages, as contrasted to three pages in the Main Volume) were needed to present the electrochemical data for molybdenum, which were published to an astonishingly great extent by Russian workers. The large volume of literature is due to the extensive industrial application of the metaL, cf. "MoLybdän" Erg.-Bd. A 1, 1977, and to its occurrence in various oxidation states. The book provides - for the first time in the German-speaking world - a comprehensive scientific contribution to the reappraisal of sexualized violence in a psychotherapy institute. The qualitative case study takes a look at decades of abuse of power and sexualized violence by the director of an analytical institute for children and young people. It shows that the psychotherapists involved in this system do not live up to central ideas and concepts of their profession: Silence, denial, rationalization, rejection of responsibility, and ignorance of those affected have for a long time prevented the uncovering of the acts and sustainable forms of coming to terms with them. The life of the institute is characterized by a dialectical tension between the necessity of processing and the desire for undisturbed functioning. This dynamic also proves to be analogous to the problem-solving patterns of psychotherapeutic patients. The case points to fundamental problems in the field of psychotherapy, which are primarily related to a structural power imbalance and pronounced dependency relationships both in the context of training and in the treatment setting. The findings of this empirical study are used to derive professional and organizational ethical considerations and - based on these - to formulate concrete recommendations for the prevention of sexualized violence in psychotherapy institutes.
Traditional Chinese medicine has been used for thousands of years by a large population. It is currently still serving many of the health needs of the Chinese people; and still enjoying their confi dence it is practised in China in parallel with modern Western medical treatment. In addition to scientific organisations dedi cated to modern Western medicine, e. g. the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and various medical schools, a series of parallel institutions have been established in China to promote traditional Chinese medicine, such as the Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine and training institutions. Almost all hospitals in China have a department of traditional medicine. Furthermore, a large number of scientific journals are dedicated to traditional Chinese medicine, covering both experimental and clinical investigations. Medicinal materials constitute a key topic in the treatment of disease according to traditional Chinese medicine. The Chinese Pharmacopoeia (1985 edition) is therefore divided into two sepa rate volumes, Volume I containing traditional Chinese medicinal materials and preparations and Volume II containing pharmaceu tics of Western medicine. The oldest Chinese review of medicinal materials, Shennong Bencao Jing (100-200 A. D. ), covered 365 herbal drugs. The clas sic compilation in this field, Bencao Gangmu (Compendium of Materia Medica), was published in 1578 by Li Shi-zhen and recorded as many as 1898 crude drugs of plant, animal and min eral origin.
This proceedings volume contains a selection of revised and extended papers presented at the Second International Workshop on Nonmonotonic and InductiveLogic, NIL '91, which took place at Reinhardsbrunn Castle, December 2-6, 1991. The volume opens with an extended version of a tutorial on nonmonotonic logic by G. Brewka, J. Dix, and K. Konolige. Fifteen selected papers follow, on a variety of topics. The majority of papers belong either to the area of nonmonotonic reasoning or to the field of inductive inference, but some papers integrate research from both areas. The first workshop in this series was held at the University of Karlsruhe in December 1990 and its proceedings were published as Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence Volume 543. The series of workshops was made possible by financial support from Volkswagen Stiftung, Hannover. This workshop was also supported by IBM Deutschland GmbH and Siemens AG.
The aIm of the first two German editions of our book Kon struktionslehre (Engineering Design) was to present a comprehensive, consistent and clear approach to systematic engineering design. The book has been translated into five languages, making it a standard international reference of equal importance for improving the design methods of practising designers in industry and for educating students of mechanical engineering design. Although the third German edition conveys essentially the same message, it contains additional knowledge based on further findings from design research and from the application of systematic design methods in practice. The latest references have also been included. With these additions the book achieves all our aims and represents the state of the art. Substantial sections remain identical to the previous editions. This book analyzes several investment strategies that are applied to an international equity portfolio. The evaluated strategies are: the Simple Crossover Moving Average, the Equally Weighted Portfolio, the Minimum Variance Portfolio, the Certainty Equivalent Tangency Portfolio, the James Stein Estimator and the Black Litterman Model. Besides the applied methodology part which demonstrates how to implement the considered strategies, the empirical section shows from the viewpoint of a European investor whether the final performance parameters are mainly due to returns of foreign markets or through exchange rate developments. The investigation is carried out from an ex ante as well as from an ex post perspective. In order to examine the time window of a strategy, the in- and the out of the sample periods are varied. The empirical investigation indicates that - the relative young more sophisticated approaches are superior to the traditional strategies, the impact of exchange rate developments cannot be ignored in an equity portfolio, nearly no conclusion can be drawn in the context of a superior in- and out of the sample period.
