This monograph is devoted to the growth of crystals using optical furnaces. Optical furnaces can be understood and designed making recurrence to concepts that stem from analytical geometry.
This book is intended to familiarize the reader with the method of Gaussian matrices and some related tools of optical design. The matrix method provides a means to study an optical system in the paraxial approximation. This text contains new results such as theorems on the design of variable optics, on integrating rods, on the optical layout of prism devices, etc. The results are derived in a step-by-step way so that the reader might apply the methods presented here to resolve design problems with ease.
Well-defined single crystals of high quality are of importance in some branches of industry as well as in fundamental investigations of materials research. This monograph is devoted to the growth of crystals using optical furnaces. Optical furnaces can be understood and designed making recurrence to concepts that stem from analytical geometry. Therefore, these ideas are presented taking both “faces” of analytical geometry into account. For the operation and maintenance of optical furnaces it is advantageous to gain an understanding of their principle of operation and alignment sensitivities. The method of analysis presented in this book strongly relies on pictorial representations and ray tracing is used as a means to visualize the working principles of these furnaces.
The book provides a detailed, lucid, up-to-date account of the application of color duplex Doppler sonography in the diagnosis of pathologic conditions of the human venous system. Basic principles of duplex and color Doppler sonography are discussed, and examination techniques clearly explained. The interpretation of findings is elucidated with the assistance of numerous high-quality illustrations. All chapters are written by recognized experts in the field, ensuring that this volume will be of great value to all with an interest in sonography of the venous system.
The aIm of the first two German editions of our book Kon struktionslehre (Engineering Design) was to present a comprehensive, consistent and clear approach to systematic engineering design. The book has been translated into five languages, making it a standard international reference of equal importance for improving the design methods of practising designers in industry and for educating students of mechanical engineering design. Although the third German edition conveys essentially the same message, it contains additional knowledge based on further findings from design research and from the application of systematic design methods in practice. The latest references have also been included. With these additions the book achieves all our aims and represents the state of the art. Substantial sections remain identical to the previous editions. The main extensions include: - a discussion of cognitive psychology, which enhances the creativity of design work; - enhanced methods for product planning; - principles of design for recycling; - examples of well-known machine elements*; - special methods for quality assurance; and - an up-to-date treatment of CAD*.
This work offers a detailed case study on the dynamics of forest use, degradation, and loss in Northeast Luzon, Philippines. Following an interdisciplinary approach, the study charts the degradation and loss of forest in this area between 1950 and 1990, as it relates to the social and political context of logging, forest migration, and changes in upland agriculture. Based on ten years of research, the author introduces us to the actions, livelihood options, and motives of all the principal group of actors.
This all-new edition of a classic text has been thoroughly revised to keep pace with the rapid progress in signal transduction research. With didactic skill and clarity the author relates the observed biological phenomena to the underlying biochemical processes. Directed to advanced students, teachers, and researchers in biochemistry and molecular biology, this book describes the molecular basis of signal transduction, regulated gene expression, the cell cycle, tumorigenesis and apoptosis. "Provides a comprehensive account of cell signaling and signal transduction and, where possible, explains these processes at the molecular level" (Angewandte Chemie) "The clear and didactic presentation makes it a textbook very useful for students and researchers not familiar with all aspects of cell regulation." (Biochemistry) "This book is actually two books: Regulation and Signal Transduction." (Drug Research)

Lock-in amplifiers are key devices in numerous instruments used in the optical sciences or in optical equipment in the industry. In many experimental configurations, they represent the means to reliably detect and record small signals. The purpose of this text is to provide a step-by-step introduction to this technique. The first part explains how modulation is used to extract a signal from noise and describes different types of modulation. The focus shifts from electronics to optics in the second part, which covers lock-in amplifier applications in optical instruments. The book is intended for readers who want to better understand instruments and experiments based on lock-in detection and/or to design (and perform) new experiments in which lock-in amplifiers are applied.
Electrostatic stresses are a fascinating field where materials science, continuum mechanics and electrical engineering all come together. This is one of the reasons why the study of these so-called Maxwell stresses is so interesting.
