New sections include a look at the impact of the Constitution on substantive criminal law, and a detailed treatment of the impact of Article 40.5, protecting the inviolability of the dwelling, on both criminal procedure and civil law. What is SPIN? SPIN is a general tool for the specification and formal verification of software for distributed systems. It has been used to detect design errors in a wide range of applications, such as abstract distributed algorithms, data communications protocols, operating systems code, and telephone switching code. The verifier can check for basic correctness properties, such as absence of deadlock and race conditions, logical completeness, or unwarranted assumptions about the relative speeds of processes. It can also check for more subtle, system dependent correctness properties expressed inthe syntax of Linear-time Temporal Logic (LTL). The tool translates LTL formulae automatically into automata representations, which can be used in an efficient on-th-fly verifications procedure. This DIMACS volume presents the papers contributed to the second international workshop that was held on the SPIN verification system at Rutgers University in August 1996. The work covers theoretical and foundational studies of formal verifications, empirical studies of the effectiveness of different types of algorithms, significant practical applications of the SPIN verifier, and discussions of extensions and revisions of the basic code. The book features in situ methods for fluorescence probes and confocal scanning microscopes. Three in situ hybridization methods for electron microscopes are analyzed: the non-embedded tissue method using ultrathin frozen sections, pre-embedded method, and post-embedded method using material embedded in hydrophilic resin. Positive and negative features are discussed, and clear instructions regarding implementation of techniques are provided. Particular aspects of the techniques are examined in detail, such as preparation of tissue, pretreatment, hybridization procedures, revelation (autoradiography and immunocytology) and checking procedures, in addition to the illustration, interpretation, and discussion of methods and results. The main applications described include virus detection, chromosomal gene mapping, detection of ribosomic nucleic acid, and detection of messenger RNA in animals and plants. Hybridization Techniques for Electron Microscopy is an excellent reference for cytologists, cell biologists, histochemists, cytochemists, molecular endocrinologists, and neuroendocrinologists.

The book provides an ethical and empirical justification for support of formalistic teaching in primary and secondary schools in developing countries. It also refutes the application of progressive education principles to curriculum and pre- and in-service teacher education in such contexts. The central focus of this book is the formalistic teaching prevalent in the classrooms of many developing countries. Formalistic (‘teacher-centred’, ‘traditional’, ‘didactic’, ‘pedagogic’) teaching is appropriate in the many countries with revelatory epistemologies, unpopular and old-fashioned though these methods may seem in some western, especially Anglophone, ones. Formalism has been the object of many failed progressive curriculum and teacher education reforms in developing countries for some 50 years.
