Nora Scruggs McCall was a deeply religious woman, who never lost her faith that God was always in control, and that everything would work out, as it should. Miss Middleton’s scores are, indeed, a frozen moment in time which prove the existence in 1913 and 1914 of “automatic” phonic decoding of print as opposed to “conscious” psycholinguistic decoding of print. The scores also prove that automatic decoding does result from the phonic “sound” method to teach reading, since that is how Miss Middleton’s children learned to read. However, the “reading experts” in 1914 and after must have misinterpreted scores like Miss Middleton’s wildly fluctuating scores, which obviously were the result of freely wandering attention, by concluding instead that the scores had “proved” that the “sound” method had failed. The truth is that such low “reading comprehension” scores on “silent reading comprehension” tests for phonic-trained classes suggest the presence of healthy automatic conditioned reflexes in reading. Such scores may result from the Miss Middleton Effect of voluntarily wandering attention while reading automatically. Her children simply did not bother to pay attention to what they were reading automatically, but could have done so if they felt like it. Yet the inferior deaf-mute “sight-word” method forces children’s attention to “meaning” or they cannot read at all. They may therefore score higher on simple “reading comprehension tests”, but far, far worse on spelling and on reading correctly the actual words on the page.
This is a story set in the North Carolina Mountains. It is about two families of Scotch-Irish and also French decent. It centers in on one 11 year old girl and her 6 year old sister and two boy cousins, one is 12 and the other one is 8 years old. The story begins in the year 1914. The author got many of the story ideas for this book from an elderly lady who was doing an oral history for the Rural Life Museum Director at the college where the author of this book studied teaching. The author worked in the library. But this sweet lady decided she wanted to write her story and she requested someone to illustrate it and this is what brought the two together. While the elderly lady wrote her local history book, the college asked the author and the lady to do an Elderhostel Class for the college. The elderly lady told the author many stories she did not put in her book. One of these stories became the Fire and another the Grandfather. There really was a Frenchman who came to this community with his trained monkey and an organ grinder. And that monkey is really buried in the family cemetery. The author also included stories that her father told her such as the Ghost. This story was of a haunting lady that killed her husband in the early 1800s. She was hung for it in 1838 and this too is a true story from these mountains.

Through a series of theoretically informed readings, this book explores the uncanny effectivity of history in its seeming absence in canonical works by Burke, Wordsworth, Keats, and Baudelaire written in the shadow of the French Revolution and the Revolution of 1848. The book begins with the discovery that, in these writers, issues of narration and figuration are already taken up in the political and historical questions raised by the two revolutions; conversely, historical-political positioning and representation are involved from the beginning in problems of narration and figuration. This co-implication of aesthetics and history in each other has profound consequences: once historical events take the form of figures, they no longer act as literal, material referents but rather interrogate the status of reference itself. Far from being denied, history becomes a problem for analysis, one whose normative frames of understanding and founding concepts, such as event, experience, and chronology, must be rethought. This can be most easily seen in the fact that the four writers, in their different ways, all miss historical occurrencenot when they try to flee it, as many older accounts of Romanticism have claimed, but just when they attempt to engage it most intensely.

Two different and opposite kinds of readers are developed at the very beginning stages of reading instruction as the result of different and opposite kinds of teaching. One kind of reader is taught to read by the 'sound' of print, and reads automatically and with great accuracy. The other kind of reader is taught to read by the 'meaning' of print, as Chinese characters are read, and not only reads inaccurately, but is actually encouraged to do so by so-called 'psycholinguistic guessing.' The Hidden Story explains why the teaching of 'psycholinguistic guessing' to beginning readers, although it manifestly results in a life-long disability, has been the 'experts'' instructional preference ever since 1870, although the term itself is a relatively recent invention.
