Reflecting the increased attention to gender and women in the field of employment relations, there is now a growing international literature on women and trade unions. The interest in women as trade unionists arises partly from the fact that women comprise 40 percent of trade union membership in the USA and over 50 percent in the UK. Further, despite considerable overall union membership decline in both the UK and USA, more women than men are joining unions in both countries. Recognition of the importance of women to the survival and revival of trade union movements has in many cases produced an unprecedented commitment to equality and inclusion at the highest level. Yet the challenge is to ensure that this commitment is translated to action and improves the experience of women in their union and in their workplace. Gender and Leadership in Trade Unions explores and evaluates the similarities and differences in equality strategies pursued by unions in the US and the UK. It assesses the conditions experienced by women union members and how these impact on their leadership, both potential and actual. Women have made gains in both countries within union leadership and decision-making structures, however, climbing the ladder to leadership positions remains far from a smooth process. In the trade union context, women face multiple barriers that resonate with the barriers facing aspiring women leaders in other organizational contexts, including the gendered division of domestic work; the organization and nature of women’s work; the organization and nature of trade union work and the masculine culture of trade unions. The discussion of women trade union leaders is situated more broadly within debates on governance, leadership and democracy within social justice activism.

This book explores prisoners’ experiences of prison education and investigates whether participation in prison education contributes to an offender’s ability to desist from crime and increases social capital levels. While the link between prison education and reduced rates of recidivism is well established through research, far less is known about the relationship between prison education and desistance. The book demonstrates how prisoners experience many benefits from participating in prison education, including increased confidence, self-control and agency, along with various other cognitive changes. In addition, the book examines prisoners’ accounts that provide evidence of strong connections between prison education and the formation of pro-social bonds which have been shown to play a role in the desistance process. It also highlights the links between prison education and social capital, and the existence of a form of prison-based social capital arising from the prison culture. Written in a clear and direct style, this book will appeal to those engaged in criminology, sociology, penology, desistance, rehabilitation, the sociology of education and all those interested in learning more about the positive impact of prison education on prisoners.

This book offers biographical aspects of the authoress and a selection of her conferences on the revolution in Nicaragua and the foreign politics of the United States in the '80s. The conferences were given to religious leaders, university students, the Reagan administration, and the Congress and leaders of diverse organizations in the United States. It helps us to visualize the process of internal transformations that Maryknoll, the most revolutionary missionary order of the United States, experienced at that time and the participation of many of its members in the processes of change of Central America. Through her interesting annotations, the authoress helps us to visualize the process of internal transformation that Maryknoll suffered, and the participation of many of its members in that process of change given a quote of martyrdom. One of the nuns who worked in Nicaragua with the authoress, Sister Maura Clark, was murdered later in El Salvador together with others nuns as well a lay volunteer. The book also offers a vision of the popular participation in the Nicaraguan revolution of 1979, an aspect little known and that the authoress was touched by. In 1992 she had to leave of Nicaragua and live in exile.
