Japan has faced widespread scrutiny for failing to properly address international parental child abduction involving its citizens. This book examines how and why Japan has come to have this tarnished image, its response, and how it might manage these disputes in the future. In particular, the book explores how Japan engages with international legal frameworks to manage international parental child abduction and what this means, in reality, for Japanese people and others who come under its wide umbrella. A focus of this examination is how the key international treaty, the Hague Convention of 25 October 1980 on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction, has fared since being introduced in Japan in 2014. Case studies of parental child abduction involving Japan are used throughout to illustrate the legal and social concepts discussed in the book. The struggles of both abducting and left-behind parents across fluid international borders reveal seismic social and philosophical shifts in Japan that continue to shape its legal landscape. Evolving from a 27,000-acre rancho, to a colony of farmers, and then to a neighborhood subdivision, Long Beachs Los Cerritos is the story of a fiercely independent community established prior to William Willmores vision of a city of Long Beach took hold. Life centered around the historic Rancho Los Cerritos throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries as John Temples cattle ranching was replaced by Jotham Bixbys sheep ranching and tenant farming operations. Jotham Bixby sold off land for small farms to create the Cerritos Colony, and further subdivided land to create the Los Cerritos neighborhood. Invaded by oil drilling rigs after the discovery of oil in nearby Signal Hill, fires and noise caused the residents to flee. Los Cerritos declined but rebounded in the 1930s, aided by the presence of the Virginia County Club, stately homes designed by world-renowned architects, and the restoration of the historic rancho adobe by the Bixby family.

This book claims that metaphors must be seen as indispensable cognitive and communicative instruments in medical science. Analysis of texts taken from recently published medical handbooks reveals what kind of metaphors are used to structure certain medical concepts and what the functions are of the metaphorical expressions in the texts. Special attention is drawn to the idea that scientific facts do not originate from passive observation of reality. Imaginative thinking and the use of metaphors are required to make the unknown accessible to us. Yet, although metaphors are often a sine qua non for the genesis of a scientific fact, they may also inhibit the development of alternative views. This is due to the fact that metaphors always highlight certain aspects of a phenomenon while other aspects remain obscured. Analysis of the metaphors used in medical texts may reveal exactly which aspects are highlighted and which remain hidden and may thus help to find alternative metaphors (and possibly therapies) when current metaphors are no longer adequate. This book should be of interest not only to linguists, translators and researchers working in the field of intercultural communication, but also to doctors and medical scientists, and those interested in the philosophy of science.

Like Olivia's ancestors, they found community in neighborhoods and Roman Catholic churches that spoke their language and followed Polish customs. Polonia, From the Beginning is Book Two of the Series, The Polish Americans. Poles who came to America were one of many groups who arrived on its shores with new hopes and dreams. The families who settled in Milwaukee around the turn of the 20th century were bound together by culture, religion and language. Stoically, they faced the new world. In the early years, the immigrant families remained close to the customs of their native lands. Often rejected for their foreignness, or the threat they represented to more established groups, the residents of Polonia slowly make their contribution to the often changing society. In their adopted country, the sons and daughters begin the process of Americanization. The next generation, who sometimes forget their Polish heritage, think of themselves, primarily, as Americans. Of those born in Poland, Peter and Ursula Zbikowski arrive with a son and a daughter. In America, they have six more children and grandchildren. The next to arrive, Albert and Sara Kubiak, also emigrated with two children and have a third in America. Their daughter, Irene, marries Peter and Ursula’s son Luke. The Modjeski family comes from another part of Poland. Here, the husband, Frank, came first. He then sent for his wife, Anna, and their daughter, Helen. In America, Anna gives birth to six more children, expanding as farm families did in Poland. The drama is narrated by Olivia, a member of the current generation and a descendant of all of them. She ties the stories of the;families together. Olivia is a gifted college student who interviews family members and looks at their historical papers and documents to fill in gaps in her knowledge of her ancestors. By understanding the trials of older generations, blood to her, she hopes to chase away the demons she faces in her own life. In this account of family life and relationships, the reader learns what matters most, regardless of the circumstances. The dramatic, funny, unforgettable circumstances. Whether the characters are born in Poland or in America, their experiences, their problems and resolutions, resonate in the lives of us all.
