The book is not meant to be a comprehensive research compendium, nor does it emphasize basic science research so important as a precursor to clinical drug trials. Good pain management requires a partnership between you, the patient, and your treating physician. Therefore, my hope is that many physicians and other healthcare providers will benefit from reading this book. It is essential that you know as many facts as possible that are likely to shape your physicians decision making. Therefore, I wrote this book as a sequel to The Handbook on the Pharmacological Management of Chronic Pain written for physicians and other pain clinicians to assist them in their decision making. I wrote the book at a level that may be somewhat difficult for some non health care providers because of a vocabulary that often may be more technical than your usual reading. None the less, because some of you may have difficult chronic pain problems or have family members or friends with such problems I chose to cover each topic in a thorough rather than cursory fashion. Whenever possible, I discussed or defined medically technical terms to assist you.
The growth of neurochemistry. molecular biology, and biochemical genetics has led to a burgeoning of new information relevant to the pathogenesis of brain dysfunction. This explosion of exciting new information is crying out for collation and meaningful synthesis. In its totality, it defies systematic summa tion, and, of course, no one author can cope. Thus invitations for contributions were given to various experts in areas which are under active investigation, of current neurological interest, and pregnant. Although this project is relatively comprehensive, by dint of size. other topics might have been included; the selection was solely my responsibility. I believe systematic summation a virtual impossibility-indeed, hardly worth the effort. The attempt to assemble all of the sections involved in a large treatise with multiple authors inevitably results in untoward delays due to the difference in the rate at which various authors work. Therefore, the following strategy has been adopted: multiple small volumes and a relatively flexible format, with publication in order of receipt and as soon as enough chapters are assembled to make publication practical and economical. In this way, the time lag between the ideas and their emergence in print is the shortest.

Learning disabilities is a subject that is usually associated with school-aged children where the research and intervention strategies are well known. Much less research has been done for assessing and diagnosing older adolescents and adults in this area. This work is an effort to provide a comprehensive review of what we know about certain of these disorders, specifically: language-based learning disorders; nonverbal learning disorders; high-functioning autism; attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder; and mathematics disorders and how they manifest themselves in the later years of development and maturity. A chapter addresses each one of these disorders of learning. Included in each chapter is a discussion of historical perspectives, definitions and diagnostic criteria, incidence and prevalence data, comorbidity studies, pertinent research from all relevant fields of study, reasonable accommodations in academia as well as the workplace, and outcome data. This much-needed review will be of interest to clinicians in neuropsychology, educational psychology, and psychopharmacology.
