Anthropology has neglected the study of music and this needs to be redressed. This book sets out to show how and why. It does so by bringing music to the subfield of digital anthropology, arguing that digital anthropology has much to gain by expanding its horizons to music – becoming more interdisciplinary by reference to digital/media studies, music and sound studies. Music and Digital Media is the first comparative ethnographic study of the impact of digital media on music worldwide. It offers a radical and lucid new theoretical framework for understanding digital media through music, showing that music is today where the promises and problems of the ‘digital’ assume clamouring audibility – while acting as a testing ground for innovations in the digital-cultural industries. The book contains ten chapters, eight of which present comprehensive original ethnographies. The chapters between them addresses popular, folk and art musics in the global South and North, including Kenya, Argentina, India, Canada and the UK/Europe, with each chapter providing a different regional or digital focus. Anthropologist Georgina Born presents one of the first ethnographies of a powerful western cultural organization, the renowned Institut de Recherche et de Coordination Acoustique/Musique (IRCAM) in Paris. As a year-long participant-observer, Born studied the social and cultural economy of an institution for research and production of avant-garde and computer music. She gives a unique portrait of IRCAM's composers, computer scientists, technicians, and secretaries, interrogating the effects of the cultural philosophy of the controversial avant-garde composer, Pierre Boulez, who directed the institute until 1992. Born depicts a major artistic institution trying to maintain its status and legitimacy in an era increasingly dominated by market forces, and in a volatile political and cultural climate. She illuminates the erosion of the legitimacy of art and science in the face of growing commercial and political pressures. By tracing how IRCAM has tried to accomodate these pressures while preserving its autonomy, Born reveals the contradictory effects of institutionalizing an avant-garde. Contrary to those who see postmodernism representing an accord between high and popular culture, Born stresses the continuities between modernism and postmodernism and how postmodernism itself embodies an implicit antagonism toward popular culture.

Christina Rossetti is known as the greatest female poet of the Victorian age. By the time of her death in 1898 she had written eleven hundred poems and had published over nine hundred of them. Scholars have long felt the need for a complete collection of her work, yet, until now, there has been none. In this projected three-volume set, R.W. Crump will present all of Rossetti’s known poetry. Crump gives the reader a remarkably comprehensive text with notes revealing Rossetti’s process of composition and revision and her painstaking concern for the technical details of her work. The variant readings in the notes are taken from extant manuscripts, individual poems as published or privately printed before being incorporated into her published collections, and all the English and American editions of her poems through William Michael Rossetti’s The Poetical Works of Christina Georgina Rossetti (1904). A special feature of this variorum edition is its list of holographs and their locations. In the first volume Crump brings together Rossetti’s two earliest published collections; in the second will be the individually published poems; and in the third, the unpublished poems.
Book One. Delcinas Tears. describes the long painful years of slavery. the total lack of education and the isolation of eighteen years without ever seeing the outside of that reformatory. It describes living, sleeping, eating and working in the same rooms with her mother but neither one knowing their relationship to each other. Her Crime? Being born At age eighteen she escaped this wretched entombment by leaping from an unbarred second story window. Book Two, Beyond the Walls, follows Georgina through the houses of prostitution, the jails, and the streets of the real Canada of the nineteen fifties. It includes the illicit sexual attentions of the child sexual abuser of her childhood. He became the barrier of her adult attempts to live normally in a world that was anything but normal. Her lack of education. her inability to understand the outside world set her up for failure as a psychiatrist explained it to her later Book Three. Rehearsals in Madness, takes her to Toronto in hopes of finding a better life away from New Brunswick where it all began. In the summer Georgina lives and writes at the lake in Canada relishing the healing solitude of the woods and the night songs of loons. For six months of the year she camps and writes her stories in the Sonoran desert of Southern Arizona.
Poetry is a fascinating use of language. With almost a million words at its command it is not surprising that these Isles have produced some of the most beautiful, moving and descriptive verse through the centuries. In this series we look at individual poets who have shaped and influenced their craft and cement their place in our heritage. Christina Georgina Rossetti was born in London in 1830 one of four children who were all to become artists and writers. Educated at home, her life was filled with the Italian influences of her Father and the wide ranging interests of her mother. She began to write at age 12 just at the time her Fathers health broke and the family descended to near poverty. She was first published aged 18 and over the following decade her writing was to flourish and in 1860 her most famous work Goblin Market was released and her reputation was set. A sufferer from Graves disease from the 1870's she also developed breast cancer which subsequently recurred and was to cause her death in 1894. She is buried in Highgate Cemetery. Christina Rossetti (1830-1894) is one of the finest devotional poets who has written in the English language. Her deep faith and boundless creativity are both evident in the moving poem in which she meditates on the uniqueness of Christ.
