From my very first childhood memory, I have loved the Eastern red cedar tree. They grow in abundance all over my home state of Kentucky. To this day I experience joy when finding an old cedar fencerow. These beautiful dark green trees, growing very close to each other in a straight row marking property boundaries. There are few of them now as they have fallen to the ravages of time and change. The cedars grow to be very old, the trunks telling the story of age. They are a favorite shelter place for birds and tree frogs. They 'shout out' in vivid green against the backdrop of tender spring, hot dry summer, glorious colors of autumn, and the grays and browns of winter. Those who know and love me continued to plead for a short story book. Writing poetry is my forte, my confident area of expertise, but everyone kept saying that all my poems tell a story. They also often reminded me that I am a grand storyteller. It is my hope that all who read these stories told from my head and heart, will find a comfort and joy within the pages of this book. And, like the cedar trees, these stories, a portion of my legacy, will stand the test of time, bring pleasure and endure within the hearts of my readers for years to come.
I began writing this collection soon after publishing Emotions. From memory, I have always been fascinated with the moon and remember using my favorite Uncles World War II binoculars, staring at the moon with wonder and delight. During a conversation with the dear friend from, "In Praise of Southern Girls," she suggested the name, Moon Stages. In truth, our lives change with the seasons but ever so subtly with the more frequent changes of the moon. These poems come from a healed, thankful heart. They pay tribute to friendship, to finding again those from my past, they offer up a thanksgiving for blessings and sing a song to new love. Preview readings from portions of this work have garnered each time the comment, "Cant wait to read this collection!
The poems in this collection were written in reflection. They portray the authors deepest emotions about "what living will surely do." She began writing them at a time in life when she felt as if she were "coming into her own." Moving to central Illinois with her husband, she decided to do something other than teaching and began work in a greenhouse. That's when she discovered the true blend in her personality. Mother's affinity with plants, Dad's sales ability, and their joy of meeting people. The city of Springfield proved to be a beautiful place to live, the history of it, intriguing. Happiness and contentment brought creativity to the surface and she began the "Emotions" collection. She continues to write, often adding to a new collection, telling others that they may just end up a poem! Read, relate, laugh, cry, and remember your own.
