One of the decisive battles of the 20th century began on August 29, 1914 with the cry that echoed throughout France: “The Prussians are coming!” It ended on September 10th, that same year. Earlier, more than a million German troops—five massive armies—poured into Belgium and France. The French army began the biggest retreat in its history, and Germany seemed about to triumph. But the German right wing, instead of wheeling to the east of Paris, as the famous Schlieffen Plan required, crossed to the west of Paris, exposing its banks. The counterattack was led from Paris, using the city’s taxi streets in a famous dash to take soldiers to the front. The German plan was thwarted, and the Kaiser’s army was forced to retreat. It was an astonishing and costly victory: over 300,000 French soldiers died. As stirring as a novel, The Marne is a classic of military history.

Georges Florovsky (1893-1979) was one of the most prominent Orthodox theologians and ecumenists of the twentieth century. The main themes presented in this volume are exercise intolerance and muscle contracture. These two topics could seem different at first sight but share common clinical features. For instance, symptoms of exercise intolerance are myalgias and cramps but metabolic contractures as well. Likewise exercise intolerance is sometimes due to dystrophinopathy, it self causing contractures. Therefore, it is justified to gather these two syn dromes in one study. Exercise intolerance and muscle contracture could seem well known, even obsolete. It is not right. A reappraisal of these has be come necessary for two reasons. First of all there are many new causes of exercise intolerance; secondly, the pathophysiology remains ob scure in particular for muscle contracture and a clear classification is probably possible. There is no book devoted to exercise intolerance and muscle contrac ture. This volume is divided in two parts related to the above topics. The two sections are introduced by a didactic and general overview, describ ing the main symptoms, classification and classical etiology. The other chapters, written by the best experts, present the recent advances in these syndromes and show many new aspects: new glycogenosis or mitochondriopathies, dystrophinopathies, malignant hyperthermia, my otonic disorders. Pathophysiology and classification of persistent con tractures are described as well as therapy. Each chapter is thoroughly referenced, representing important progress in research in the field.

A Florentine painter who took Dominican vows, Fra Angelico (1400-1455) approached his work as a largely theological project. For him, the problems of representing the unrepresentable, of portraying the divine and the spiritual, mitigated the more secular breakthroughs in imitative technique. Didi-Huberman explores Fra Angelico's solutions to these problems - his use of color to signal approaching visibility, of marble to recall Christ's tomb, of paint drippings to simulate (or stimulate) holy anointing. He shows how the painter employed emptiness, visual transformation, and displacement to give form to the mystery of faith. In the work of Fra Angelico, an alternate strain of Renaissance painting emerges to challenge rather than reinforce verisimilitude. Didi-Huberman traces this disruptive impulse through theological writings and iconographic evidence and identifies a widespread tradition in Renaissance art that ranges from Giotto's break with Byzantine image-making well into the sixteenth century. He reveals how the techniques that served this ultimately religious impulse may have anticipated the more abstract characteristics of modern art, such as color fields, paint spatterings, and the absence of color. Part of Didi-Huberman's large-scale rethinking of art theory and history, and the first of his books to appear in English translation, Fra Angelico is a fitting introduction to one of the most original and celebrated writers in the world of art history and criticism.
