When millionaire ad executive Rich Larson flees New York for the Catskills, he seeks the kind of happiness derived from a rod, reel, and a bucket of worms. But after he assumes a new identity as Johnny Paycash, a singer-songwriter who regularly performs at the Hooten Holler Taproom, he is inexplicably framed as a drug-dealing terrorist by a crooked, cross-dressing cop. After his fingerprints are found on a bag of cocaine, Johnny is arrested, thrown in the slammer, and forced to rely on Fat Schanz, his gambling-addicted ex-convict lawyer, to bail him out. If not for his girlfriend, Sugarfoot, a vivacious farm girl who sings like an angel and shoots like Annie Oakley, Johnny might go insane the exact defense his lawyer is planning on his behalf. As Johnny stands in court in front of Judge Perkins, he receives raucous support from the unruly regulars of the Hooten Holler Taproom including Big Al, a house painter who looks like Elvis, and Tommy Dick, a womanizing honky-tonk piano man. As mayhem surrounds the trial, a mysterious ghostwriting gossip columnist chronicles the adventures and leads the entire oddball group to a surprise unveiling of the truth about a kidnapping, a murder, and quite possibly a miracle.

Value pluralism is the idea, most prominently endorsed by Isaiah Berlin, that fundamental human values are universal, plural, conflicting, and incommensurable with one another. Incommensurability is the key component of pluralism, undermining familiar monist philosophies such as utilitarianism. But if values are incommensurable, how do we decide between them when they conflict? George Crowder assesses a range of responses to this problem proposed by Berlin and developed by his successors. Three broad approaches are especially important: universalism, contextualism, and conceptualism. Crowder argues that the conceptual approach is the most fruitful, yielding norms of value diversity, personal autonomy, and inclusive democracy. Historical context must also be taken into account. Together these approaches indicate a liberal politics of redistribution, multiculturalism, and constitutionalism, and a public policy in which basic values are carefully balanced. The Problem of Value Pluralism: Isaiah Berlin and Beyond is a uniquely comprehensive survey of the political theory of value pluralism and also an original contribution by a leading voice in the pluralist literature. Political developments in Georgia have always been baffling to those who did not live there. This work picks up the story of the evolution of Georgia political parties where the author left it in his first book, Politics on the Periphery: Factions and Parties in Georgia, 1783-1806 (1986), carrying the story through 1845, by which date parties in Georgia actually mirrored those at the national level.It is a complicated story, involving, among other things, the legacy of the Yazoo Land Fraud; the development of political parties on the national level; and, especially, the presence of the Creek and Cherokee tribes in Georgia during a period when white Georgians were bent on expanding the culture of cotton. It is an unlovely story, but, by the mid-1840s, parties in Georgia finally resembled those in other parts of the nation, though, if one looked closely at their principles, questions remained.
