Aerosols: An Industrial and Environmental Science is a comprehensive account of the science and technology of aerosols as well as their aerodynamic and physico-chemical properties. Measurement techniques and results are presented in terms of a framework of classical mechanics and macroscopic chemistry. This book is comprised of 10 chapters and begins with a discussion on the foundations of modern aerosol science and technology, followed by a review of the dynamic theory of aerosols as rigid spheres. The production of particle suspensions, the methods of particle sampling and measurement, and physical or chemical characterization are then considered, along with particle diffusion by Brownian motion, particle formation and growth, and coagulation processes. The formation of particle clouds is described by means of molecular agglomeration (condensation) processes, breakup and disintegration, and chemical reactions. The remaining chapters focus on several major applications of aerosol science in areas such as combustion, agriculture, and medicine. This monograph is intended to serve scientists and engineers who are concerned with the underlying principles of aerodynamic and physical chemical behavior of aerosols, and could also be used as a text for graduate students in specialized courses on aerosol or colloid chemistry, atmospheric processes, and chemical, mechanical, or environmental engineering.

In a very real sense, much of North American physiological plant ecol ogy began in the Basin and Range and has been researched there over the last four decades. However, we believe that this book may be the first attempt to bring together the full range of contemporary research into the fascinating plant biology of the Basin and Range Province. We have invited contributions from researchers presently working in and around the Province and asked them to review the major vegetation zones and distinctive environmental issues from a predominantly plant ecophysiological perspective. As researchers interested in plant physi ological and ecological processes, and in atmospheric processes affect ing vegetation, we have tended to emphasize the atmosphere, plant, soil continuum in structuring this book. After an introduction to the geography of the region, we deal with atmospheric processes and climates of the Great Basin, follow with chapters on the different vegetational zones, treated from ecophysiological perspectives, and then place emphasis on plant-soil relations. We have not treated plant animal interactions in the detail that the impacts of man and his domesticated animals on the desert ecosystem deserve. However we have included a review of a very promising technique (analysis of stable isotopes at natural abundance) for integration of these processes. We close with a compelling statement of the case for the Great Basin as a laboratory for climatic change research, prepared by a multidisciplinary team from the Desert Research Institute.

Have you ever had questions about events in some ones life that affected you and you never ask? As we, Mariette and I were returning home from PA one evening and we had visited Barbara Bunting on the old farm, I ask Sis (that's what we call Mariette) "how did Dad find that farm". This 300 acre farm was in the middle of no where, about halfway between Springboro and Albion in rural PA. Sis, being the oldest of us 5 kids, surly would know about the move but she didn't. Another thing I had questions about was Mother and Dads meeting and their courtship in California where they were married. Again she had no idea. As you know, being young children, you were never interest in stuff like that and later you had your own group of friends and still not interested. Then you meet the love of your life and nothing else was important to you. Then kids, job and married life and time slips by and then you lose one parent and a short time later both are gone. They took all the life experiences and stories with them. I had questions for my Father and Mother that can never be answered by them so I have decided to write this book. Have my children ask me those questions, no. Do they want to sit and listen to me tell them my life's stories, no. Will they have questions when we are gone, most likely!
