The emergence of Latin American firebrands who champion the cause of the impoverished and rail against the evils of neoliberalism and Yankee imperialism--Hugo Chávez in Venezuela, Evo Morales in Bolivia, Néstor Kirchner in Argentina, Andrés Manuel López Obrador in Mexico--has changed the landscape of the Americas in dramatic ways. This is the first biography to appear in English about one of these charismatic figures, who is known in his country by his adopted nickname of "Little Ray of Hope." The book follows López Obrador's life from his early years in the flyspecked state of Tabasco, his university studies, and the years that he lived among the impoverished Chontal Indians. Even as he showed an increasingly messianic élan to uplift the downtrodden, he confronted the muscular Institutional Revolutionary Party in running twice for governor of his home state and helping found the leftist-nationalist Democratic Revolutionary Party (PRD). As the PRD's national president, he escalated his political and ideological warfare against his former president, Carlos Salinas, and other "conspirators" determined to link Mexico to the global economy at the expense of the poor. His strident advocacy of the "have-nots" lifted López Obrador to the mayorship of Mexico City, which he rechristened the "City of Hope." Its ubiquitous crime, traffic, pollution, and housing problems have made the capital a tomb for most politicians. Not for López Obrador. Through splashy public works, monthly stipends to senior citizens, huge marches, and a dawn-to-dusk work schedule, he converted the position into a trampoline to the presidency. Although he lost the official count by an eyelash, the hard-charging Tabascan cried fraud, took the oath as the nation's "legitimate president," and barnstormed the country, excoriating the "fascist" policies of President Felipe Calderón and preparing to redeem the destitute in the 2012 presidential contest. Grayson views López Obrador as quite different from populists like Chávez, Morales, and Kirchner and argues that he is a "secular messiah, who lives humbly, honors prophets, gathers apostles, declares himself indestructible, relishes playing the role of victim, and preaches a doctrine of salvation by returning to the values of the 1917 Constitution-- fairness for workers, Indians' rights, fervent nationalism, and anti-imperialism.

Our planet has survived numerous events that threatened to extinguish that life, but ultimately our most remote ancestors began to walk the plains, mountains, and valleys of Africa. In remote prehistory, groups of people migrated out of Africa eventually to populate the whole world. The author provides a timeline for the major events that eventually shaped the modern world. In the earliest settlements, humans domesticated plants and animals. Over time, they formed city-states. Civilizations rose and fell, passing along little snippets of knowledge to those who followed. The journey acquaints the reader with these great civilizations and the people who gave us the arts and sciences and the rules of law for living together. The civilizations of Athens and Rome became the foundation of western civilization. In the last two thousand years, world history is dominated by the spread of Christianity. Therefore, the journey takes us through those events in Judea to the kings, queens, popes, and emperors of Europe while events are also unfolding in Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and the Americas. The modern world has been largely shaped by the colonial period beginning about 1500 AD. Much attention is given to events since then which are proximate to the world we experience today. World Wars I and II then shaped most of the modern nation states in which we live. The author allows the reader to stand apart and be an observer of the journey of humankind. We have taken many different paths to arrive in the modern world with wonderfully diverse appearances, languages, and traditions, but we are all one family. The author hopes we will embrace our differences and act together as the family we are while shaping the future.

Most of the galleons were lost in the tempest, their golden treasures swallowed by the waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Three galleons were shipwrecked on the barrier islands of Texas, with approximately three hundred survivors. Only two of these castaways survived to record the grim fate of the lost treasure fleet for history. Serpent Wind is a fictional tale that weaves through three true stories from the earliest history of North American exploration the adventure of Cabeza de Vaca, the expedition of Coronado, and the shipwreck of the Spanish treasure fleet of 1553. It also details the bizarre, brutal war that this shipwreck spawned. Serpent Wind provides insights into forgotten episodes from American history, and also offers intriguing perspectives on issues of cultural conflict. Ultimately, Serpent Wind is a literary tale of primitive justice, from the earliest recorded history of the land we call Texas.

The prehistoric native peoples of the Mississippi River Valley and other areas of the Eastern Woodlands of the United States shared a complex set of symbols and motifs that constituted one of the greatest artistic traditions of the pre-Columbian Americas. Traditionally known as the Southeastern Ceremonial Complex, these artifacts of copper, shell, stone, clay, and wood were the subject of the groundbreaking 2007 book Ancient Objects and Sacred Realms: Interpretations of Mississippian Iconography, which presented a major reconstruction of the rituals, cosmology, ideology, and political structures of the Mississippian peoples. Visualizing the Sacred advances the study of Mississippian iconography by delving into the regional variations within what is now known as the Mississippian Iconographic Interaction Sphere (MIIS). Bringing archaeological, ethnographic, ethnohistoric, and iconographic perspectives to the analysis of Mississippian art, contributors from several disciplines discuss variations in symbols and motifs among major sites and regions across a wide span of time and also consider what visual symbols reveal about elite status in diverse political environments. These findings represent the first formal identification of style regions within the Mississippian Iconographic Interaction Sphere and call for a new understanding of the MIIS as a network of localized, yet interrelated religious systems that experienced both continuity and change over time.
