This volume consists of twenty-one studies on a subject of supreme importance, the New Testament understanding of the person and work of Jesus Christ. All the main questions surrounding the earliest thinking about Jesus of Nazareth are addressed, including Canon, the use of the Old Testament,miracles, pre- existence, sacrifice, and the end of the age. The collection is dedicated to the memory of Professor George Caird of Oxford, whose life and work were devoted to laying aside the accumulated prejudices of the centuries and letting the Bible speak for itself. Professor Caird's many books represent the kind of deeply penetrating questions to beasked of the biblical writers if the Bible is to remain a relevant book for modern man. In the same tradition each contributor to The Glory of Christ in the New Testament has sought to raise new questions - questions whose answers will both advance current debate and stimulate discussion for manyyears to come.

Chapter 3 acknowledges and answers objections from outside the biblical text that Paul as a monotheistic Jew would not identify Jesus as God. Similarly, chapter 4 answers objections that Paul would not refer to Jesus as God in Romans 9:5(b) because he does not so identify Jesus elsewhere. Chapter 5 considers the importance of Paul's identification of Christ as the stone of stumbling and the end of the law in Romans 9:30-10:4, especially for how he understood Jesus. Chapter 6 argues that in Romans 10:5-13, Paul understood Jesus as the referent of the one on whom all call for salvation, assigning to Jesus an Old Testament reference to YHWH as the one who could save. Chapter 7 argues there is no separate way of salvation for Israel and that Jesus is YHWH, the redeemer from Zion, which Israel must join Gentiles in recognizing.

In the 1990s alone, more than 400 works on angels were published, adding to an already burgeoning genre. Throughout the centuries angels have been featured in, among others, theological works on scripture; studies in comparative religions; works on art, architecture and music; philological studies; philosophical, sociological, anthropological, archeological and psychological works; and even a psychoanalytical study of the implications that our understanding of angels has for our understanding of sexual differences. This bibliography lists 4,355 works alphabetically by author. Each entry contains a source for the reference, often a Library of Congress call number followed by the name of a university that holds the work. More than 750 of the entries are annotated. Extensive indexes to names, subjects and centuries provide further utility.
