Ravished by the Spirit is a sympathetic yet critical account of the profound effect of Nova Scotia preacher Henry Alline and his New Light disciples on the nineteenth-century evangelical ethos of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and neighbouring New England. Alline's pietistic and mystical gospel was influential on the Free Will and Calvinist Baptist Churches and also gave shape and substance to the region's revivalistic tradition. In this provocative discussion of various religious revivals, the author argues that at the heart of these significant social movements lay a collective yearning for intimacy and a desparate search for meaningful relationships.

Between 1776 and 1830 the Maritime provinces were the site of important waves of religious revivals. Focusing chiefly on Baptists and Methodists, George Rawlyk uses rich primary sources to examine these happenings. Most contemporary interpreters of revivals have explained them in terms of their social and psychological functions and effects. Rawlyk recognizes the importance of such themes but avoids the temptation to reduce revivals to their non-religious functions. While he explores the multi-faceted dimensions of revivalism, he makes it clear that the people involved regarded their religious experiences as valuable in their own right.
In his chapter on Acadia, Barry Moody argues that the university has been surprisingly open to a variety of theologies and pedagogical perspectives, tracing this to the liberality and breadth of vision of Nova Scotia Baptists. His study helps explain the remarkable strength of the Baptist tradition in late nineteenth-century Nova Scotia. J.R.C. Perkin's chapter on one of Acadia's distinguished presidents, Watson Kirkonnell, shows Kirkonnell as representative of this tradition and its strength. G.A. Rawlyk examines some of the underlying forces which significantly affected the development of McMaster University. He suggests that the cutting edge of McMaster's nineteenth century Evangelicalism may have been dulled by the enthusiastic manner in which "consumerism" and "modernity" were appropriated by the Baptist Convention leadership which controlled the university. In his discussion of Brandon College, Walter Ellis argues that Brandon failed as a Baptist institution of higher learning largely because it was out of touch with Western Canadian realities. If it had been a bible college rather than a Manitoba variant of McMaster, Brandon might still be in existence and Conventional Baptists might as a result be a far stronger force in the West. These essays on individual institutions highlight the pressure on denominational universities to emphasize not only Christian spirituality but secular scholarship. They will be of interest to all those who are concerned not only with the fate of Baptist institutions but the entire Christian church in Canada.

He argues that radical evangelicalism was the leading edge of Protestantism and was more democratic and populist than contemporary evangelicalism in the United States.
Champions of the Truth makes available G.A. Rawlyk's Bell Lectures in Maritime Studies, given at Mount Allison University in 1987 and 1988 in honour of Winthrop Pickard Bell. Rawlyk links his earlier work on Henry Alline to his new research on Canadian Baptists in particular the Maritime Baptists during the first half of the twentieth century.
