Book One of this series is a photo-reproduction of a book first published by Sir Delves L. Brroughton in 1908, which gives historical details of the Delves-Broughton family. Unfortunately it was not able to reproduce the coats of arms in colour. Book Two (this volume) does just that. The two books should be read alongside each other and Book Two provides some cross references that makes navigation through Book One easier.Geoffrey Hugh Lindop has added some genealogical information about the family relevant to the early twentieth century.
This book is intended for the genealogist researching family history in the Potteries town of Hanley in the English county of Staffordshire. Geoffrey Hugh Lindop has compiled this book by extracting information from the Staffordshire Post Office Directory of 1864 and presenting it in a modern font. In doing so the genealogist or local historian will find this booklet easier to read than the original. An alphabetical listing by surname of the influential inhabitants may assist in family history research but in 1864 they had to pay to be included in the directory so poor families are not listed. A classified section (not in the original) has been added so the amount and type of commerce in 1864 can be judged. The book is completed by a description of Hanley and since it was written in 1864 provides an eye-witness account of the town.
