This collection of poems was written over more than twenty years and covers a wide range of themes and topics. Many of the poems relate to biblical images and, having spent twelve years living in Bolivia, there are Latin American themes as well. With the many things that crowd our lives, it seems that all too often we do not give ourselves the opportunity to sit and allow the muse to do its work. When we do allow the muse to work on us some writing may flow spontaneously or may piece itself together slowly, paced by the circumstances of our lives. And that certainly has been the case with these poems with some taking minutes and others years. Over the past twenty years, many times Michelle had urged me to publish some of my poems and this collection is the result of her urging. Sadly, she is no longer with us to read them in published form but this small volume is dedicated to her memory to the vibrant, creative person she was. The writing and the reading of many of the poems have been a blessing to me and a number of people and I trust that should you care to read them they will be a blessing to you as well.

Reg Prentice remains the most high-profile politician to cross the floor of the House of Commons in the post-war period. His defection reflected an important 'sea change' in British politics; the end of the post-war consensus and the beginnings of the Thatcher era. This book examines the key events surrounding Prentice's transition from a front-line Labour politician to a Conservative minister in the first Thatcher government. It focuses on the shifting political climate in Britain during the 1970s, as the post-war settlement came under pressure from adverse economic conditions, militant trade unionism and an assertive New Left. Prentice's story provides an important case study on the crisis that afflicted social democracy, highlighting Labour's left-right divide and the possibility of a realignment of British politics. This study will be invaluable to anyone interested in the turbulent and transitional nature of British politics during a watershed period.
Since flying its first mail flight on October 1, 1926, Northwest Airways, now known as Northwest Airlines, has grown to become one of the worlds leading airlines. Northwests legacy of leadership in the aviation industry began with its foundation in the Twin Cities and extended to its pioneering work as part of the U.S. war effort in Alaska, the establishment of the first U.S. commercial air links to Japan and the Orient, and its groundbreaking 1992 alliance and award of anti-trust immunity with KLM/Royal Dutch Airlines. Northwest is now Americas oldest air carrier with continuous name identification. In celebration of the airlines 80th anniversary in 2006, this book chronicles the remarkable years during which Northwest became an institutional backbone of both American and worldwide air transport history. This diverse historical tribute relies heavily on the authors own photo archive along with images supplied by the exceptional Northwest History Centre Inc., established in October 2002 to preserve the airlines rich heritage. The rare photographs seen in these pages, accompanied by a detailed and informative narrative, bring together for the first time all of the elements of the Northwest family, which includes Hughes Air West and Republic airlines and other predecessors.
The Flowering of Australia’s Rainforests provides a comprehensive introduction to the pollination ecology, evolution and conservation of Australian rainforest plants, with particular emphasis on subtropical rainforests and their associated pollinators. This significantly expanded second edition includes new information on the impact of climate change, fire, fragmentation and invasive species. Rainforests continue to be a focus of global conservation concern, not only from threats to biodiversity in general, but to pollinators specifically. Within Australia, this has been emphasised by recent cataclysmic fire impacts, ongoing extreme drought events, and the wider consideration of climate change. This second edition strengthens coverage of these issues beyond that of the first edition. The Flowering of Australia’s Rainforests makes timely contributions to our understanding of the nature and function of the world’s pollinator fauna, plant-reproduction dependencies, and the evolutionary pathway that has brought them to their current state and function. Illustrated with 150 colour plates of major species and rainforest formations, this reference work will be of value to ecologists and field naturalists, botanists, conservation biologists, ecosystem managers and community groups involved in habitat restoration.
The Invertebrate World of Australia’s Subtropical Rainforests is a comprehensive review of Australia’s Gondwanan rainforest invertebrate fauna, covering its taxonomy, distribution, biogeography, fossil history, plant community and insect–plant relationships. This is the first work to document the invertebrate diversity of this biologically important region, as well as explain the uniqueness and importance of the organisms. This book examines invertebrates within the context of the plant world that they are dependent on and offers an understanding of Australia’s outstanding (but still largely unknown) subtropical rainforests. All major, and many minor, invertebrate taxa are described and the book includes a section of colour photos of distinctive species. There is also a strong emphasis on plant and habitat associations and fragmentation impacts, as well as a focus on the regionally inclusive Gondwana Rainforests (Central Eastern Rainforest Reserves of Australia) World Heritage Area. The Invertebrate World of Australia’s Subtropical Rainforests will be of value to professional biologists and ecologists, as well as amateur entomologists and naturalists in Australia and abroad.
A travel book of vivid encounters with the New Zealand's people and landscape along its famous long trail. When journalist Geoff Chapple wrote a newspaper article that set out a vision for a 2600-km hiking trail the length of New Zealand, he never imagined that he would become the trail blazer. Over five years he talked to farmers and landowners, seeing where the route might be possible. He then walked every step of an adventurous and remote off-road trail from Cape Reinga to Bluff. Chapple set up a trail-building and fund-raising body, the Te Araroa Trust, that has enlisted the support of mayors and councillors throughout New Zealand. Now hundreds of New Zealanders and overseas visitors walk all or part of the trail every year. This is the story of how an individual took up a dream and single-mindedly created a heritage for future generations to enjoy. 'I admire his energy and creativity and support the vision of a national trail. ' Sir Edmund Hillary ' A fine far-sighted quest.' Michael King
Written in a clear and accessible style, Garden Practices and Their Science guides gardeners in the practical arts of plant husbandry and in their understanding of its underpinning principles. The author, Professor Geoff Dixon, is an acknowledged and internationally respected horticulturist and microbiologist; he intertwines these arts and principles carefully, expertly leading readers from one to the other. Achieving the manipulation of plant life is described in eight full-colour, well-illustrated chapters covering the growing of potatoes, bulb onions, legumes, small-seeded vegetables, soft fruit, bulbs and herbaceous ornamentals in great detail. Environmental factors controlling the successful husbandry of these crops is described in simple, non-technical language, increasing gardeners’ enjoyment and competence. Gardeners are also informed of the tools and equipment they require and their safe use. Discussions of very straightforward techniques for vegetative propagation conclude this book. Each chapter ends with a list of the gardening knowledge that has been gained by readers. The structure of this book fulfils a longstanding need for descriptions of practical skills integrated with the corresponding biological reactions of plants. Emphasis is placed on gardeners’ development of healthy soils, which encourage vigorous, active root systems capable of withstanding stresses—an aspect of gardening that rarely receives sufficient attention. This is the definitive biography of this extraordinary and controversial superstar, written by Geoff Brown, a former editor of Black Music magazine. For three decades James Brown dominated the changing face of post-war popular black music. Others were as inspirational in the short term, and several of his successors have been bigger pop stars, but none matched Brown's independent authority, sustained influence or commercial longevity. But while another generation danced to the pulse of James Brown, at the end of the eighties the man himself was back in a southern US jail, a country mile or so from where he was incarcerated in his teens. between the two internments is the compelling story if a man who, by reaching from his roots and striving determinedly for himself, came to represent in music and personal power the post-war emancipation of black America. Illustrated with many rare photographs and includes a comprehensive discography.
