At two o’clock in the morning on 27 April 1865, seven miles north of Memphis on the Mississippi, the sidewheel steamboat Sultana’s boilers suddenly exploded. Legally registered to carry 376 people, the boat was packed with 2,100 recently released Union prisoners-of-war. Over 1,700 people died, making it the worst marine disaster in U.S. history. This book looks at the disaster through the eyes of the victims themselves. It offers a concise, minute-by-minute account on the cause of the explosion and its effect on different parts of the boat. To focus on the personal stories of the victims, both civilian and soldier, Gene Eric Salecker patiently collected material from hundreds of letters, period newspaper stories, and other sources. Readers are first introduced to victims while they are languishing in Confederate prisons and follow their release to an exchange camp outside of Vicksburg to their eventual crowding onto the Sultana. His knowledgeable narrative is interwoven with individual reminiscences, including those of the heroic rescuers. He offers unprecedented details about the captain’s handling of the steamboat and corrects some long-held myths about the placement of the soldiers on the Sultana and newspaper coverage of the disaster. A large portion of the book covers rescue attempts, both successful and failed, and the aftermath of the disaster as it affected those involved. T. Eugene Oody received the B.S. degree from Carson-Newman College, Jefferson City, Tennessee, in 1949. He received the M.A. degree in secondary education from Humboldt State College, now Humboldt State University, Arcata, California, in 1960. He also did additional graduate studies at Purdue University, summer of 1955, and the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky, 1956-1957. Mr. Oody began his teaching career in 1949 and has taught mathematics and/or physics in secondary schools in Tennessee, Kentucky, California and Liberia where he and his wife, Betty White Oody, served as Southern Baptist missionaries over a period of sixteen years. In 1955 Mr. Oody was ordained a Baptist deacon by the First Baptist church, Loudon, Tennessee. The following year he and Betty made their commitment to foreign missions, now called international missions. He has served as deacon, Sunday school director, Bible teacher, moderator of North Coast Baptist Association, California, and a member of the Executive Board of the California Baptist State Convention. In 1990 Mr. Oody was ordained to the gospel ministry by the First Baptist Church, Aptos, California, where he served as pastor for more than five years. In June of 1963 he retired from school teaching at Los Gatos High School, Los Gatos, California, where he taught mathematics for eleven years. This ended a teaching career of forty-four years. Mr. Oody was pastor at Parkway Baptist Church, Cleveland, Tennessee, from 2000 to 2004 and is now Pastor of Senior Adults at First Baptist Church, Loudon, Tennessee, his hometown. The Oodys have two married children. Mrs. Stinson (Arvilla) Humphrey, Hawaii, and Thomas (Tom) Eugene Oody, Jr., Vestal, New York. Arvilla is married to Dr. Stinson E. Humphrey and they have three children: Rachel, married to Josh Voorhees, Dr. Carol Campbell, married to Dr. Lance Campbell and John Humphrey, engaged to Miss Katy Jongeward. Tom is married to Debbie Beam Oody. Rachel and Josh have the Oody's first great-grandchild, one year-old Sadie Anna Voorhees.

Five hundred years ago, the church of Jesus Christ underwent a Reformation. A lot happened after Martin Luther posted his 95 theses on the castle church door in Wittenberg. But the fallout was not simply the start of Protestantism. The Roman Catholic Church also recast itself in response to Luther's call for reforms. And contrary to common belief, Martin Luther did not set out to start a new church. Rather, he was trying to reform the church that already existed by reemphasizing its essence-namely, the "good news" (the gospel) that Jesus forgives and saves sinners. The unity of the church was broken when the pope rejected this call for reform and excommunicated Luther, starting a chain of events that did lead to the institutional fracturing of Christendom and to a plethora of alternative Christian theologies. But, as many - including conservative Catholics - now admit, the church did in fact need reforming. Today, the church - including its Protestant branches - also needs reforming. Some of the issues in contemporary Christianity are very similar to those in the late Middle Ages, though others are new. But if Luther's theology can be blamed - however unfairly - for fragmenting Christianity, perhaps today it can help us recover the wholeness of Christianity. The religious climate in the early 21st-century is simultaneously highly religious and highly secularized. It is a time of extraordinary spiritual and theological diversity. In the spirit of the anniversary we are observing, this book will propose the kind of Christianity that is best suited for our day. The remedies offered here are available by way of the same theology that was the catalyst for reforming the church five hundred years ago.

The political value of African American literature has long been a topic of great debate among American writers, both black and white, from Thomas Jefferson to Barack Obama. This is a study of Northern Norway and Atlantic Canada, two regions experiencing a severe crisis due to overexploitation of fisheries resources. The work of a group of researchers from Canada, Norway, and the United States, it examines the implications of common market integration, privatized resource management, and small business development policies for fishery-dependent communities in terms of long-term sustainability and participatory democracy. The book is broken into three sections: an examination of the economic and institutional history of the fisheries in Norway and Atlantic Canada, a study of the regulatory regimes used in the fisheries of these two regions, and an analysis of reactions in three communities, two in Canada and one in Norway, to the decline and collapse of fish stocks. The American newspaper industry is in the middle of the most momentous change in its entire three-hundred-year history. Since the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996 was enacted, policy makers, agency administrators, community activists, and academics from a broad range of disciplines have debated and researched the implications of welfare reform in the United States. Most of the attention, however, has focused on urban rather than rural America. Welfare Reform in Persistent Rural Poverty examines welfare participants who live in chronically poor rural areas of the United States where there are few job opportunities and poor systems of education, transportation, and child care. Kathleen Pickering and her colleagues look at welfare reform as it has been experienced in four rural and impoverished regions of the United States: American Indian reservations in South Dakota, the Rio Grande region, Appalachian Kentucky, and the Mississippi Delta. Throughout these areas the rhetoric of reform created expectations of new opportunities to find decent work and receive education and training. In fact, these expectations have largely gone unfulfilled as welfare reform has failed to penetrate poor areas where low-income families remain isolated from the economic and social mainstream of American society. Welfare Reform in Persistent Rural Poverty sheds welcome light on the opportunities and challenges that welfare reform has imposed on low-income families situated in disadvantaged areas.
