Awesome by Accident is about a precocious 17 year old boy, Gene R. Rodgers, whose future is all mapped out for him. He meets Jane who is instrumental to his emotional healing and well-being. Rodgers contemplates a life with Jane permanently a part of it. Making a life long emotional commitment will mean sacrificing a more solitary life he still seeks. Bruce, Rodgers and other school friends travel throughout North America enjoying many adventures along the way. These experiences mold Rodgers into an undefeatable force as he embraces his mantra, fortune favors the brave. Rodgers becomes confident he can live independently, becoming self-reliant, as his family would expect. Though given a poor hand, he has played it well. Armed with a strong foundation of academics and endowed with social capital to support a life worth living, Rodgers builds an impressive resume. He earns a B.S. Ed to teach science in secondary education. He also earns an MBA and a Switzer Fellowship. His experiences become more varied and demanding as he worked in three states, traveled in 44 countries on six continents. He has enjoyed adventure sports including snow skiing, ski diving, paragliding, sailing on tall-ships, scuba diving, and trekking to name a few. He becomes an entrepreneur and subsequently a self-made millionaire. The more he learned and experienced, the more humble he became. Wherever he traveled, it was the people, not the place, that fulfilled him. Rodgers learned how to bounce back, to recover, to accomplish more than most people, able bodied or not. In Awesome by Accident, Rodgers repeatedly affirms that fortune does indeed favor the brave.

Although many suffered crop failures and financial ruin, there were just as many or more who were able to make it through. The dust bowl, coupled with the Great Depression which struck America at the same time, resulted in hardship and suffering, both for the farmers who went looking for a new life, and for those who were able to stick it out. This book is a story about a family who stuck it out. Gene Ralston tells the story of the lives of a family of seven who lived in a two-room house, scratching out their lives on a dry-land farm, running a few cattle and several hundred White Leghorn chickens. Without running water, electricity or a telephone, the family existed on a survival level, gradually growing out of it as their fortunes improved. Having survived the dust bowl, the family was dumped into the rationing and shortages we all experienced during World War Two. This book is about people. Real live people, some with real, live problems, such as one epileptic brother, another who was an alcoholic, some real characters, such as the real live cowboy, Genes Uncle George Ralston, larger than life and a legend in his own time. This book is filled with these people, and tells the inside story of them and of Gene and his family.

Starting with a review of defect classifications based on their displacement fields, this book then provides connections between different dislocation arrangements, including geometrically necessary and statistically stored dislocations, and other common defects and the corresponding changes in the reciprocal space and diffraction patterns. Subsequent chapters provide an overview of microdiffraction techniques developed during the last decade to extract information about strain and dislocation gradients. X-ray microdiffraction is a particularly exciting application compared with alternative probes of local crystalline structure, orientation and defect density, because it is inherently non-destructive and penetrating.

Georgetown is an island located between the historic Kennebec and Sheepscot Rivers. Incorporated in l716, it was accessible from the mainland only by various ferries and local fishing boats until a bridge was erected in 1898. Maritime endeavors like fishing and shipbuilding emerged as the major industries in town very early on and continue to be a primary means of employment today. Georgetown encompasses several beautiful villages, all of which retain a feeling of an older time and place. As the area continued to grow as a destination for artists in the early 1900s, several notable photographers congregated at the Seguinland Hotel, now known as Grey Havens Inn, to discuss starting a school that would ignite the development of commercial photography. One of the most recognizable parts of Georgetown is Reid State Park, which attracts visitors with its beautiful beaches. Today, residents take pride in the new historical society building, firehouse, post office, and restored community center.

Two-time Academy Award winner Sir David Lean (1908--1991) was one of the most prominent directors of the twentieth century, responsible for the classics The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957), Lawrence of Arabia (1962), and Doctor Zhivago (1965). British-born Lean asserted himself in Hollywood as a major filmmaker with his epic storytelling and panoramic visions of history, but he started out as a talented film editor and director in Great Britain. As a result, he brought an art-house mentality to blockbuster films. Combining elements of biography and film criticism, Beyond the Epic: The Life and Films of David Lean uses screenplays and production histories to assess Lean's body of work. Author Gene D. Phillips interviews actors who worked with Lean and directors who knew him, and their comments reveal new details about the director's life and career. Phillips also explores Lean's lesser-studied films, such as The Passionate Friends (1949), Hobson's Choice (1954), and Summertime (1955). The result is an in-depth examination of the director in cultural, historical, and cinematic contexts. Lean's approach to filmmaking was far different than that of many of his contemporaries. He chose his films carefully and, as a result, directed only sixteen films in a period of more than forty years. Those films, however, have become some of the landmarks of motion-picture history. Lean is best known for his epics, but Phillips also focuses on Lean's successful adaptations of famous works of literature, including retellings of plays such as Brief Encounter (1945) and novels such as Great Expectations (1946), Oliver Twist (1948), and A Passage to India (1984). From expansive studies of war and strife to some of literature's greatest high comedies and domestic dramas, Lean imbued all of his films with his unique creative vision. Few directors can match Lean's ability to combine narrative sweep and psychological detail, and Phillips goes beyond Lean's epics to reveal this unifying characteristic in the director's body of work.
