A ground-breaking narrative history, which examines the never-before-told story of one of the most devastating battles of American involvement in World War I – the battle of Montfaucon. With Their Bare Hands traces the fate of the US 79th Division – men drafted off the streets of Baltimore, Washington, and Philadelphia – from boot camp in Maryland through the final years of World War I, focusing on their most famous engagement: the attack on Montfaucon, the most heavily fortified part of the German Line, during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive in 1918. Using the 79th as a window into the American Army as a whole, Gene Fax examines its mistakes and triumphs, the tactics of its commander General John J. Pershing, and how the lessons it learned during the Great War helped it to fight World War II. Fax makes some startling judgments, on the role of future Army Chief-of-Staff, Colonel George C. Marshall; whether the Montfaucon battle – had it followed the plan – could have shortened the war; and if Pershing was justified in ordering his troops to attack right up to the moment of the Armistice. Drawing upon original documents, including orders, field messages, and the letters and memoirs of the soldiers themselves, Fax tells the engrossing story of the 79th Division's bloody involvement in the final months of World War I.

In 1984, at the age of ten, Terry Marsh is witness to the murder of an abortion doctor that remains unsolved. Fifteen years later, as an investigative reporter who has experienced reasonable success for one so young, he finds himself drawn back to that incident during the course of an investigation. In a unique stroke of irony that validates the expression: "Be careful of what you wish for," Terry discovers the identity of the perpetrator but is unable to go public with it. Additionally, his idealism in seeking a career as an investigative reporter unearthing corruption and malfeasance in high places turns to disillusionment as the mainstream media falls into the abyss of concentrating its reporting on the politics of personal destruction during the Clinton era 1990s.

But his expulsion requires the Lord God's okay. Satan devises a beautiful scheme. His beloved grandmother will find happiness. Vlad will leave hell and become dean of students at Fairweather College. Vlad is to preach to the sinful students and administrators of that place. Should the students continue in their lustful and slothful ways, they will be brought down to hell en masse. If Vlad succeeds in reforming them, he will remain as Dean. Either way, Satan wins. And, to make it even more interesting, a Blunger is teaching at that very college. A Blunger of the family against whom Vlad harbors a five-hundred year old grudge! The son of the Blunger whom the Lord God ordered to lose twenty pounds, and who has instead gained eleven! To become an AS, a state must demonstrate that its regulatory program is compatible with NRC reg's. & is effective in protecting public health & safety. NRC then transfers portions of its authority to the AS. In 2003, it was reported that weaknesses in NRC's licensing program could allow terrorists to obtain radioactive materials. NRC responded to this issue, incl. issuing guidance to license examiners. This report tests the licensing program using covert investigative methods.
The American newspaper industry is in the middle of the most momentous change in its entire three-hundred-year history. A generation of relentless "corporatization" has resulted in a furious, unprecedented blitz of buying, selling, and consolidation of newspapers, accompanied by dramatic -- and drastic -- change in reporting and coverage of all kinds. Concerned that this phenomenon was going largely unreported, Gene Roberts, legendary reporter and editor, decided to undertake a huge, extended reportorial study of his own industry, what would become the Project on the State of the American Newspaper. Gathering more than two dozen distinguished journalists and writers, Roberts produced a long series of reports in the American Journalism Review, published by the University of Maryland's Philip Merrill College of Journalism, asking the crucial question: Are American communities -- in the very middle of the so-called information explosion -- in danger of becoming less informed than ever?

Explore the most effective methods of studying school violence! School violence and safety research will move forward and make unique scientific contributions only if it develops a core literature that critically examines its measurements, methods, and data analysis techniques. Issues in School Violence Research is the first book to expose the limitations of previous research, to critically examine methodological and measurement practices, and to provide guidelines to enhance future school violence research. Early literature focused on school violence as a social problem, not as an integrated area of legitimate scientific research. It is time to move beyond the social problem era of school violence to begin critically assessing its common research practices. Until recently, there has been such a rush to gather information about school violence that the methods used have hardly been questioned. The editors of this book are some of the first to raise questions about how the field conducts its research, especially with regard to self-reports among students. Issues in School Violence Research addresses significant measurement and methodological issues in school violence research. The contributors have been conducting school research for more than 15 years. To enhance your understanding of the practices usedpast and proposednumerous tables are included. In Issues in School Violence Research, you’ll find information about: school-level warning signs of safety problems weapon possession using office referral records in school violence research identification of bullies and victims data quality issues in student risk behavior surveys extreme response bias patterns for youth risk behavior surveys the structure of student perceptions of school safety and much more! Issues in School Violence Research is an important resource for anyone, from professors to policymakers. It is also appropriate as a textbook for research methodology courses. It is only through objective analysis that school violence research can develop new insights. This book presents topics that should stimulate new and better inquiry into the climate within which school violence occurs.
The Greek pre-Socratic philosophers Thales, Anaximander and Anaximenes of Miletus are generally considered the intellectual revolutionaries and founders of Western philosophy and science. They appear in the literature as "the first" in long lineages of individuals who have contributed to the advancement of ideas and knowledge. They are, however, not the only Milesians who have made their imprints on the pages of history and literature. The classical texts mention in excess of 200 historical and legendary citizens, and occasional residents, who prior to and following Thales made their marks in astronomy, geometry, mathematics, history, law, politics, cartography, town-planning, poetry, rhetoric, architecture and more. The story begins with the establishment of Minoan and Mycaenean settlements in southern Anatolia, and the legendary founders and citizens of Miletus. It moves on to a more detailed discussion of the lives and contributions of the natural philosophers Thales and his associates Anaximander and Anaximenes, and beyond them to an interesting variety of gifted citizens and residents, all of whom brought fame to the ancient city during the Ionian rebellion, the Persian and Peloponnesian wars, the conquest of Ionia by Alexander the Great, and the fragmentation of Alexander''s empire during the time of the Diadochii, or "War of the Generals". It concludes with the domination of Asia Minor by the Romans during the late Republic and Empire up to the end of the Byzantine period. It is an exciting ''Anthology'' of a city and its talented achievers as set against a background of widely different political circumstances, regional conflicts, rebellions, wars and occupations first under the Hittites, and then under the rulers of Persia, Greece, Sparta, Macedonia, Egypt, Syria, Rome, Byzantium and the Turks. The subject is of ongoing interest to historians, archaeologists and students of classical history, literature, science, religion and philosophy, as well as to amateurs and laymen who are keenly interested in Mediterranean antiquity. The purpose of the story is to stimulate interest, elicit dialogue, and provide readers with a fair measure of enjoyment.
