This book explores how the English rural has been represented in contemporary theatre and performance. Child characters feature more numerously and prominently in the Shakespearean canon than in that of any other early modern playwright. Focusing on stage and film productions from the past four decades, this study addresses how Shakespeare's child characters are reflected, refracted and reinterpreted in performance. By adopting an interdisciplinary approach that incorporates close reading, semiotics, childhood studies, queer theory and performance studies, Gemma Miller explores how a close analysis of Shakespeare's child characters, both in the text and in performance, can reveal often uncomfortable truths about contemporary ideas of childhood, as well as offer fresh insights into the plays. Sport is increasingly being described as a complex system. This inherent complexity cannot be understood by examining components in isolation; rather, the system as a whole should represent the unit of analysis. Systems thinking is the answer to understanding this complexity and is gaining traction in sport. Systems thinking provides a philosophy and a set of associated methods which can be used to understand and optimise the behaviour of complex systems, such as those inherent within sport. This book presents, for the first time, a practical guide to applying contemporary systems thinking methods in sport as well as case study applications demonstrating how their outputs can be translated in practice. The methods described in this book can be used for better understanding the systemic influences in a broad range of sport contexts, including performance, injury, team functioning, decision‐making, adverse incidents, sports organisation design and redesign, technology implementation, and proactive risk assessments. Experimental approaches to understand the pathophysiology of atherosclerosis and thrombosis involve the combination of both cellular and animal approaches. Animals have been instrumental in biomedical research in order to provide a better understanding on the mechanisms that have already been outlined in in vitro studies. Atherosclerosis studies were firstly carried out in rodents using diet-induced atherosclerosis approaches. However, these diets were un-physiological and the developed lesions were often limited in size, composition, and location largely differing from humans. During the last years, with the advent of molecular genetics and genetic manipulation techniques, the development of gene-engineered animals has allowed an explosion in the number of models resulting in a tremendous progress in the understanding of both atherosclerosis and thrombosis. However, direct translation from rodents to humans has to be taken with caution because of the well-reported species-related differences. Although there is no known animal model for human disease, large animal models have demonstrated better suitability for translation to humans. For instance swine, a species that spontaneously develops atherosclerosis and thrombosis, are more closely mimics of the macrovascular-related thrombotic complications found in humans. This book chapter provides an in depth overview of the currently available small and large animal modelsof atherosclerosis and thrombosis and examinestheir applicability for translational research purposes as well as highlights species-related differences with humans.
Co-designing Infrastructures tells the story of a research programme designed to bring the power of engineering and technology into the hands of grassroots community groups, to create bottom-up solutions to global crises. In recent history, the arts and sciences have often been considered opposing fields of study, but a growing trend in drawing research is beginning to bridge this divide. Gemma Anderson’s Drawing as a Way of Knowing in Art and Science introduces tested ways in which drawing as a research practice can enhance morphological insight, specifically within the natural sciences, mathematics and art. Inspired and informed by collaboration with contemporary scientists and Goethe’s studies of morphology, as well as the work of artist Paul Klee, this book presents drawing as a means of developing and disseminating knowledge, and of understanding and engaging with the diversity of natural and theoretical forms, such as animal, vegetable, mineral and four dimensional shapes. Anderson shows that drawing can offer a means of scientific discovery and can be integral to the creation of new knowledge in science as well as in the arts.
Theatre in Towns offers a contemporary perspective on the role of theatre in the cultural life of towns in England.
