This book compiles the latest research on a widely diverse number of populations and addresses the issue of resistance to the need to modify old practices to apply to these populations.

This book provides an in-depth exploration of trains and train travel. Letherby and Reynolds have conducted extensive research with all those concerned with trains, from leisure travelers and enthusiasts to railway workers and commuters. Overturning conventional wisdom, they show that the train has a social life in and of itself and is not simply a way to get from A to B.The book also looks at the depiction of train travel through cultural media, such as music, films, books and art. The authors consider the personal politics of train travel and political discussion surrounding the railways, as well as the relationship trains have to leisure and work. The media often paints a gloomy picture of the railways and there is a general view that the romance of train travel ended with the steam locomotive. Letherby and Reynolds show that this is far from the case.

Following the Old Buffalo and Nickajack Trails, Native Americans and early settlers were the first citizens of present-day Watauga County. In 1752, Bishop August Spangenberg, the earliest documented explorer, traveled through this steep terrain and noted the necessity of crawling on hands and knees to stay balanced. Located among the Blue Ridge Mountains, Watauga County grew slowly with few settlers until after the Civil War. The Boone and Blowing Rock Turnpike began to open up the area to commerce and tourists in the 1880s. The establishment of the Watauga Academy in 1899, several ski resorts, and upscale residential developments has changed the landscape. The towns of Boone and Blowing Rock have been listed as some of the best small towns in America and continue to attract new residents and visitors.

When Cramton Bowl was completed in 1922, no one had any idea of the unique place it would occupy in sports history. It was originally conceived as a multi-purpose facility that would focus on baseball and served as the spring training home for the Philadelphia A's for two seasons, with many professional teams stopping in for exhibition games, including a rematch of the 1926 World Series between the Yankees and the Cardinals in 1927. As the largest established stadium in the state during those early years, Alabama and Auburn played more than 70 football games in the facility, treating fans to the likes of Paul "Bear" Bryant and Don Hudson. It was home to the first HBCU Classic, the Turkey Day Classic between Alabama State and Tuskegee, and the site of the first night football game in the South (as well as the first night college football game and the second pro baseball game under the lights in the South). For more than 60 years it was home to the Blue-Gray All Star Football Classic where stars such as Y.A. Tittle, Len Dawson, Fran Tarkenton, Howie Long and Jerry Rice roamed the sidelines of Cramton Bowl, but there were plenty of other activities in the stadium during that time, including 'Lucky' Teter's traveling daredevil show in 1934, the Negro League World Series, games involving the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League and Billy Graham's Greater Montgomery Crusade in 1965.

Even though the Irish child sex abuse scandals in the Catholic Church have appeared steadily in the media, many children remain in peril. In The Child Sex Scandal and Modern Irish Literature, Joseph Valente and Margot Gayle Backus examine modern cultural responses to child sex abuse in Ireland. Using descriptions of these scandals found in newspapers, historiographical analysis, and 20th- and 21st-century literature, Valente and Backus expose a public sphere ardently committed to Irish children's souls and piously oblivious to their physical welfare. They offer historically contextualized and psychoanalytically informed readings of scandal narratives by nine notable modern Irish authors who actively, pointedly, and persistently question Ireland's responsibilities regarding its children. Through close, critical readings, a more nuanced and troubling account emerges of how Ireland's postcolonial heritage has served to enable such abuse. The Child Sex Scandal and Modern Irish Literature refines the debates on why so many Irish children were lost by offering insight into the lived experience of both the children and those who failed them.

Soul! was where Stevie Wonder and Earth, Wind & Fire got funky, where Toni Morrison read from her debut novel, where James Baldwin and Nikki Giovanni discussed gender and power, and where Amiri Baraka and Stokely Carmichael enjoyed a sympathetic forum for their radical politics. Broadcast on public television between 1968 and 1973, Soul!, helmed by pioneering producer and frequent host Ellis Haizlip, connected an array of black performers and public figures with a black viewing audience. In It's Been Beautiful, Gayle Wald tells the story of Soul!, casting this influential but overlooked program as a bold and innovative use of television to represent and critically explore black identity, culture, and feeling during a transitional period in the black freedom struggle.

The Farragut Naval Training Station, located near Coeur d' Alene, Idaho, was only operational between 1942 and 1946, but during that time it was the largest city in Idaho, the largest business in Idaho, and the second-largest U.S. naval training station. Named for Civil War hero Adm. David G. Farragut, it trained sailors from 23 different states and by June 15, 1946, the day its doors closed, a total of 293,381 recruits, or "boots," and over 25,943 service-school sailors had passed through its doors. At least two Medal of Honor recipients and one Navy Cross recipient, along with a future governor of Idaho, spent time at the station. After its decommissioning, it served as the Farragut College and Technical Institute. Today it is the site of Farragut State Park and a small U.S. Navy acoustic research detachment.
The West’s pioneering experience has been both documented and dramatized enough to give us all some impression - for right or for wrong - of what pioneers were and what they did. Some of those impressions are dryly accurate, and some are excitingly fictitious. Jennie’s Tiger is neither - carefully researched and truthfully told, it gives a reliable view of the homesteading experience as well as an engrossing and moving story of strong characters making for themselves the life they want. The real Wes and Jennie Wooding homesteaded 160 acres on the Pend Oreille river in northeast Washington state from 1900 till 1923. Life before this chapter of their lives had been consistently hardscrabble and sometimes tragic. Building their own home on their own land was the greatest success and the greatest contentment they had ever had. They arrived at Tiger’s Landing by steamboat with three small boys and cut down enough trees to build a 14’ X 24’ one-story house to shelter them. In that house, named Hawthorn Lodge, they soon added a fourth boy. Like most settlers with no cash, Wes had to work “outside” to earn the money for Proving Up the homestead. He walked several hundred miles looking for the work he knew, in the mines. A devoted member of the Western Federation of Miners and a sincere Socialist, Wes was ambivalent about the Wobbly movement and glad when, after the required seven years, he could stay at home and make his life at Tiger’s Landing with Jennie and the boys. While Wes was away, Jennie was entirely capable of sheltering, feeding, clothing and raising the boys with her own skills. With help from the children, she chinked the cabin with river mud; she kept the table laid with game and fish she provided and produce she grew; she made furniture for the bare house; she skillfully sewed clothes for the family. She gradually turned the subsistence farm into a lucrative business. Fearful of missing Wes’s letters, she started the first post office in her community. As the boys reached school age, she donated land and saw that the first school began to operate. Bringing with her skills and medicines, she became doctor, nurse and midwife to the growing community. Frustrated by goods that came from a riverboat that could run only half the year, she started the first store. Through all this, Jennie was eternally buoyant; she never felt misused or deprived, only content, proud and happy. But when the outside world threatened Hawthorn Lodge in the form of a railroad right against the house, Jennie found she had to swallow her anger and make the best of it. When World War I took two of her boys away, she did what she could to help the soldiers while hating the war. Having successfully raised the four boys to strong men, Jennie’s years at Hawthorn Lodge, Tiger, Washington, come to a tragic end, and we last see her heading back to California and the outside world.

Justin Tolbert was a war hero and the new Earl of Wynfield, but he was not the same man Lady Sarah Spense once knew…. Suddenly, too vividly, Sarah remembered the night he had first asked her to dance. The London ballroom had been overcrowded, its heat stifling. Justin had been wearing his uniform, the handsome regimentals setting off the perfection of his strong body and his still-boyish face. She had thought then that there was no man more handsome in the room. She had stepped willingly into his arms, and when the music had begun, she had drifted, following his lead. They had moved together without conscious thought. As if the two of them had been created to dance together…. Would they ever do that again…? Don't miss Gayle Wilson's extraordinary tale!
From its early focus on documentary film and nation building to its more recent spotlight on contemporary culture and feature filmmaking, Moroccan cinema has undergone tremendous change since the country's independence in 1956. In What Moroccan Cinema? A Historical and Critical Study, 1956-2006, Sandra Gayle Carter chronicles the changes in Moroccan laws, institutions, ancillary influences, individuals active in the field, representative films, and film culture during this fifty-year span. Focusing on Moroccan history and institutions relative to the cinema industry such as television, newspaper criticism, and Berber videomaking, What Moroccan Cinema? is an intriguing study of the ways in which three historical periods shaped the Moroccan cinema industry. Carter provides an insightful and thorough treatment of the cinema institution, discussing exhibition and distribution, censorship, and cinema clubs and caravans. Carter grounds her analysis by exploring representative films of each respective era. The groundbreaking analysis offered in What Moroccan Cinema? will prove especially valuable to those in film and Middle Eastern studies.
