It claims that the libidinal—the site of unconscious desire—plays not a supplementary or trivial, but a constitutive role in global political economy. Thus, in contrast to political economy, which assumes a rational subject, libidinal economy is founded on the notion of a desiring subject, who obeys a logic not of good sense or self-interest but profligacy and irrationality. Then came the dot. com boom -and suddenly e-commerce was the most exciting topic possible! Venture capital was available from every possible source and almost any company with a . com in its name could be assured of instant funding on request. This boom was, inevitably, followed by the dot. com bust and the press wamed that the days of e-commerce were gone, perhaps never to return. This apparently confusing 'stages of growth' model is in reality nothing ofthe sort. E-commerce is simply the logical outcome of combining computers with tele communications networks. The astonishing changes which a global economy has brought with it are reflected in the changes to the way we do business which are increasingly synonymous with e-commerce. Indeed, the term e-commerce itself is coming to mean only the transaction-based component of e-business-'any process that a business organisation conducts over a computer-mediated network' as Thomas Mesenbourg ofthe U. S. Census Bureau said in 1999.

This book presents an account of the concept of mind in Hindu Tantra through a study of religious and philosophical texts in the medieval period. Offering an understanding on how the mind is conceptualized both as that which keeps a person bound to the cycle of reincarnation and as having transformative potential in allowing a person to achieve liberation or salvation, this book examines mostly previously untranslated sources. It shows how there are different understandings of the mind that relate to different ideas of redemption. The main tantric tradition, the Śaiva Siddhānta, adopts a model of mind from Yoga in which the wandering mind keeps us trapped, whereas the nondualist Śaiva tradition, sometimes called ‘Kashmir’ Śaivism, sees the mind as inherently pure and free. The book traces a history of the concept of mind from early sources, especially Buddhism, through to the tantric medieval period, and ending with the eighteenth century. The author shows how the concept changes and what is retained. A comparison of the tantric ideas of mind with those of some European philosophy – notably Descartes’ dualism and German idealism’s non-dualism – sharpens the concept of mind in the tantric tradition. A historical and philosophical study of key ideas in the tantric traditions, this book will be of interest to researchers in the field of Religious Studies, Asian Religion, Hindu Studies, Indian philosophy, and comparative philosophy.

In 1968 at the University of Illinois, David Cohen made scientific history when he measured a neuronal oscillation known as the alpha rhythm from the brains of four human volunteers. The measurement of the alpha rhythm was not in itself a breakthrough: the German psychiatrist, Hans Berger, had discovered the rhythm decades earlier during his first recordings of human electroencephalography (EEG). What was novel about Cohen’s experiment was that it did not measure electrical potentials on the scalp as is the case for EEG. Instead, the measurements were made using a metal coil built to measure magnetic fields. Cohen had become the first person to measure the brain’s magnetic field and in doing so had pioneered an entirely new method for measuring the brain’s activity: magnetoencephalograpy (MEG). In the intervening decades MEG has grown from a highly specialised method practiced by a small number of researchers to a routine method of human neuroscience available at laboratories across the world. However, as the use of MEG has increased, so too has the number of people encountering MEG for the first time, and this has created a growing need for materials that aid the understanding of MEG for those with no prior experience.
