Sir George Bernard Shaw’s contribution to the Western theatre is unparallel, and hence, is imitated, remembered and read by literature lovers even today. Over the course of his life he wrote more than 60 plays, and nearly all his plays address prevailing social problems, but each also includes a vein of comedy that makes their stark themes more palatable. In these works, Shaw examined education, marriage, religion, government, healthcare, and class privilege as primary themes of his plays. This book is an anthology of some of Shaw’s important plays, which are much talked about, and also prescribed in the English Literature syllabuses of all premier Indian and International Universities. As the title suggests, the book focuses on three important social components of that period—Politics, War and History. This book deals with a new set of triangular orthogonal functions, which evolved from the set of well known block pulse functions (BPF), a major member of the piecewise constant orthogonal function family (PCOF). Unlike PCOF, providing staircase solutions, this new set of triangular functions provides piecewise linear solution with less mean integral squared error (MISE). After introducing the rich background of PCOF family, which includes Walsh, block pulse and other related functions, fundamentals of the newly proposed set - such as basic properties, function approximation, integral operational metrics, etc. - are presented. This set has been used for integration of functions, analysis and synthesis of dynamic systems and solution of integral equations. The study ends with microprocessor based simulation of SISO control systems using sample-and-hold functions and Dirac delta functions. This book is a source of new knowledge to researchers and academicians in the area of mathematics as well as systems and control.

Further, anthropogenic interferences disturb the environments and accelerate degradation of nature of this fragile ecosystem simultaneously. Roles played by almost all the agents including man and environment and their involvement are identified for the changing environmental scenario of the Sunderbans. The book is befitted for the researchers and students for the post graduate levels. The Sunderbans, a UNESCO World Heritage Site covering parts of Bangladesh and the southern tip of Indian state of West Bengal, is a part of world's largest deltaic plain of fluvio-marine deposit formed by the Ganges and Brahmaputra at the confluence of the Bay of Bengal. It is the largest single block of tidal halophytic mangrove forest in the world, conspicuous for its great size and biodiversity. With an enormous network of channels and creeks, tidal inundation twice daily, Sunderbans mangroves wetland is a dynamic and complex ecosystem, which undergoes continuous processes of erosion and accretion. Natural processes like changes in local hydrology, sediment motion under wind, wave and tidal action, beach dynamics, regional and global processes like sea level rise as well as the impact of human interference in the form of reclamation of forest land, changes in land use patterns, coastal urbanizations etc are the lead factors for the changes in the environmental scenario of Sunderbans.

Proterozoic sedimentary rocks in the Sheeprock and the adjacent West Tintic Mountains in northcentral Utah were thought to be deformed and transported along the Sheeprock and Pole Canyon thrusts during the Cretaceous to early Tertiary Sevier Orogeny. Evidence from the observed stratigraphy, stratigraphic separation diagrams, downplunge projections of the structure, large-scale relationships between bedding and cleavage orientations, microstructural observations and finite strain data indicate that the Pole Canyon and the Sheeprock thrusts are the same fault, the Sheeprock thrust. The Sheeprock thrust was folded into a gentle synform and subsequently offset by motion along the Indian Springs fault. Based on the offset pattern of the folded Sheeprock thrust along the Indian Springs fault and multiple slickenlines on the Indian Springs fault, two components of motion are recognized; a dextral strike-slip component and a dip-slip component of motion where the southern block is downthrown. The relative age between the two components is not clear.

Seeking to resolve the mutual suspicion between the disciplines, Gautam Basu Thakur draws out the connections existing between Lacan's teachings on subjectivity and otherness and writings of postcolonial and decolonial theorists such as Gayatri Spivak, Frantz Fanon, and Homi Bhabha. By developing new readings of the marginalized other as radical impasse and pushing the envelope on neoliberal identity politics, the book moves postcolonial studies away from the perennial topic of identity and difference and into examining the form and function of the other as excess—surplus and/or lack—in colonial and postcolonial literature, film, and social discourse. Looking at writings by Mahasweta Devi, Amitav Ghosh, Leila Aboulela, Narayan Gangopadhyay, Katherine Boo, and films by Gillo Pontecorvo , Clint Eastwood, Ryan Coogler (Black Panther), and Tony Gatlif, Basu Thakur highlights a new set of ethical and political considerations emerging as a direct result of this shift and stakes a fundamental rethinking of postcoloniality through what he calls the "politics of ontological discordance.

This book presents a comprehensive legal and constitutional study of emergency powers from a comparative common law perspective. It is one of very few comparative studies on three jurisdictions and arguably the first one to explore in detail various emergency powers, statutory and common law, constitutional and statutory law, martial law and military acting-in-aid of civil authority, wartime and peacetime invocations, and several related and vital themes like judicial review of emergency powers (existence, scope and degree). The three jurisdictions compared here are: the pure implied common law model (employed by the UK), implied constitutional model (employed by the USA) and the explicit constitutional model (employed by India). The book’s content has important implications, as these three jurisdictions collectively cover the largest population within the common law world, and also provide maximum representative diversity. The book covers the various positions on external emergencies as opposed to internal emergencies, economic/financial emergencies, and emergent inroads being made into state autonomy by the central or federal governments, through use of powers like Article 356 of the Indian Constitution. By providing a detailed examination of the law and practice of emergency powers, the book shares a wealth of valuable insights. Specific sub-chapters address questions like – what is the true meaning of ‘martial law’; who can invoke ‘martial law’; when can it be invoked and suspended; what happens when the military is called in to aid civilian authorities; can martial law be deemed to exist or coexist when this happens; what are the limits on state powers when an economic emergency is declared; and, above all, can, and if so, when and how should courts judicially review emergency powers? These and several other questions are asked and answered in this study. Though several checks and constraints have been devised regarding the scope and extent of ‘emergency powers,’ these powers are still prone to misuse, as all vast powers are. A study of the legal propositions on this subject, especially from a comparative perspective, is valuable for any body politic that aspires to practice democracy, while also allowing constitutionally controlled aberrations to protect that democracy.
