The Cleveland Jewish Orphan Asylum, 1868-1924

The Cleveland Jewish Orphan Asylum was for fifty years (1868-1918) the home for some 3,500 boys and girls, most of them immigrants from Eastern Europe. Gary Polster's study examines the efforts of the more acculturated German Jews of Cleveland to "Americanize" and make good workers of the newcomers, and to teach a Judaism quite removed from the Yiddish culture and religious orthodoxy of Eastern Europe. The dominant figure at the asylum during the formative years was Samuel Wofenstein (1841-1921), a native of Moravia who by the age of 22 had earned both a rabbinical degree and a Ph.D in philosophy. He became a trustee of the JOA in 1875 and its superintendent in 1878. For a man who gained a reputation as an authoritarian, his first wish was to free the children from a lock step regimentation, which produced an "institutional type..marked by repression if not atrophy of the impulse to act independent." Wolfenstein stressed obedience through persuasion, through religion (Reform Judaism), and moral exhortations. Students were to be imbued with respect for work through performing useful tasks--the boys in the stables and on the grounds, the girls in the kitchen, the laundry, and the sewing room. The idea of "assimilation" was necessarily paternalistic but many of the German Jews believed that by becoming more "American" and less obviously "Jewish" they would deflect the always present nativism and anti-Semitism. As for the children, they remained for the most part ambivalent about the orphanage and about Wolfenstein and his successors. They were taught some useful skills; they were fed and clothed. Their chief deprivation was of the spirit. Professor Polster brings to his study a sensitivity that complements his grasp of the literature of "asylum" and the social history of turn-of-the-century America. He has listened well to the aging men and women who once were the children "inside looking out.

Although there are many areas along which we might have discussions regarding this topic, salvation is a fact and none of us can change that truth. Is there someone in your life who God would have read this book? Gary and his wife, Diane, are native Houstonians. Having had a career as a corporate pilot and, later, as a sales pilot for a local jet sales organization allowed him to travel all over the world. "In my travels, God gave me the opportunity to see just how blessed I and my family are to live in a free and prosperous country where we can worship God without fear," Gary recounts. He has changed careers and is currently a field engineer for a marine electronics firm which services radar and communications systems for the various cargo and cruise ships in the Port of Houston. Gary has been continually active in his church and in local organizations such as Boy Scouts and FFA and looks forward, prayerfully, to more writing and published works in the future. In late 1944, 78 U.S. Navy sailors and officers climbed aboard a ship just 150 feet long and 23 feet wide, and headed toward the sound of gunfire. One of a class of gunboats known as "mighty midgets," LCS 52 carried an arsenal equal to ships twice its size. Yet its shallow draft enabled it to maneuver to within a few hundred feet of any beach. Packed inside the tiny craft, the diverse crew were farmers, students, cooks and teachers. They ranged from age 17 to middle-aged--a few had seen combat in the Atlantic and the Pacific. This book tells the story of the ship's extensive service in World War II's Pacific Theater. Most of the crew survived the war, as did LCS 52 itself, serving in the U.S. Navy and Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force until 1958, when it was decommissioned and used for artillery practice. A roll call of crew members is included, with biographical information when available.
