Patrick receives a telephone call from his long-time friend Aylie inviting him to stay with her for the weekend. The weekend turns into several days and they have an enjoyable time together. Aylie suddenly changes as she suffers a mental breakdown and she puts a strong sedative into Patrick's coffee. Patrick wakes up in total darkness and finds that Aylie has imprisoned him and has chained him up in her basement. Patrick suffers much abuse and torture by Aylie who then permanently maims him. Trapped in her basement the pleasant time becomes a living nightmare as Aylie continues her torture and abuse and with no sign of escape Patrick is driven into the depths of terror and despair.

Canada is too cold for me in October, as is Michigan so I head south through Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas to the Gulf of Mexico, Padre Island and then through the deserts to California. This book is a compilation of the long letters (that became a diary) that I wrote home to my daughter up to February. Serpins constitute a superfamily of proteins that possess a unique tertiary structure and mechanism of proteinase inhibition. In humans, serpins constitute 10% of the plasma proteins and are best known as critical regulators of both the thrombotic and fibrinolytic systems. Serpins also participate in the regulation of the complement cascade, angiogenesis, tumor metastasis, apoptosis and innate immunity. Considering the importance of these molecules in regulating proteolytic cascades, it is not surprising to find that loss- and gain-of-function mutations result in significant human diseases. Massive thrombosis or bleeding, hereditary angioedema, Alzheimer''s disease, diabetic angiopathy and tumor invasion are some of the human diseases associated with serpins. In addition, mutations that alter serpin conformations (the serpinopathies) lead to lung disease, cirrhosis and a form of familial dementia. The goal of this text is to present the current knowledge on the molecular and cellular basis of serpins and their diseases.

The engineers find out that there is more to the Glistening Planet than vast wealth and they soon find themselves fighting for their lives. More are on the way to raid the planets' riches as well as an army from a military regime and the engineers know they must get off the Glistening Planet as they know of its location and to remain means certain death.

The Dilemmas of an Erastian Reformer

John Jewel (1522-1571) has long been regarded as one of the key figures in the shaping of the Anglican Church. A Marian exile, he returned to England upon the accession of Elizabeth I, and was appointed bishop of Salisbury in 1560 and wrote his famous Apologia Ecclesiae Anglicanae two years later. The most recent monographs on Jewel, now over forty years old, focus largely on his theology, casting him as deft scholar, adept humanist, precursor to Hooker, arbiter of Anglican identity and seminal mind in the formation of Anglicanism. Yet in light of modern research it is clear that much of this does not stand up to closer examination. In this work, Gary Jenkins argues that, far from serving as the constructor of a positive Anglican identity, Jewel's real contribution pertains to the genesis of its divided and schizophrenic nature. Drawing on a variety of sources and scholarship, he paints a picture not of a theologian and humanist, but an orator and rhetorician, who persistently breached the rules of logic and the canons of Renaissance humanism in an effort to claim polemical victory over his traditionalist opponents such as Thomas Harding. By taking such an iconoclastic approach to Jewel, this work not only offers a radical reinterpretation of the man, but of the Church he did so much to shape. It provides a vivid insight into the intent and ends of Jewel with respect to what he saw the Church of England under the Elizabethan settlement to be, as well as into the unintended consequences of his work. In so doing, it demonstrates how he used his Patristic sources, often uncritically and faultily, as foils against his theological interlocutors, and without the least intention of creating a coherent theological system.

In effect, it is a partial reconstruction of the Bremen records, based on official passenger lists and manifests in the custody of the National Archives.
