Gary Channing's transition into middle age has been rather uneventful so far. After twelve good years of marriage to his loving wife Sue and raising two kids, Gary's life has become something of a blur of rinse-and repeat evenings watching the TV. However, Sue has organised for the two of them to spend the weekend in Hope Hall, a so called haunted stately home where even the walls feel like they're watching you. Being fans of the paranormal themselves, Gary and Sue think they've seen everything, but that comfort quickly vanishes as soon as the couple arrives on the grounds. Plagued by visions and waking nightmares, Gary immediately feels at odds with the eerie hallways of Hope Hall, something which only is exacerbated when he finds himself talking to the wealthy architect of the building, Henry. Talking to the owner shouldn't be a problem, but Henry built Hope Hall in 1840, and died thirty years after that. Offering Gary a haunting warning about his fate and purpose at the Hall, the ghost informs him that he'll be visited by even more appariations over the coming months, all who will give him the insight he needs - in one form or another - for the impending battle between good and evil, getting the rest of the family caught up in the mix, Gary's beliefs are brought into question as he falls head first into this fight for the souls of the dead.

While we were trained to be soldiers and I witnessed acts of bravery every day, we were still part of our generation; and our generation was closing down universities, protesting, and generally fucking up the country. Our country was as divided as it hadnt been since the Civil War. Us? We as soldiers were conflicted, torn between a culture that included everyone that you ever knew and the brothers that we served with. We grew our hair to the military limit, listened to music, carried on a personal protest about something or the other, and smoked pot. Racism was part of the inhuman view of our adversaries. Just as our fathers had called their enemies Japs and Krauts, we called ours Gooks. So the influence on eighteen-, nineteen-, and twenty-year-olds was kind of warped, especially if you spent most of your time in the bush. While I plead guilty of all of those things at eighteen, they are not what I became or what my returning brothers and sisters became. Every soldier has a story to tell, each with differ nuances, but the overall experience and attitudes were about the same. I saw bravery and craziness in every possible way. The bottom line, in my humble opinion, is that truth is stranger than fiction. While this account is fictional, the events are not. In truth, I dont do justice to what I observed and was a part of.

Webster); the death of his son, Langdon, and the births and childhoods of his daughters Susy, Clara, and Jean; as well as the several lawsuits and personal feuds in which he was involved. During these years, too, Clemens expressed his views on racial and gender equality and turned to political mugwumpery; supported the presidential campaigns of Grover Cleveland; advocated for labor rights, international copyright, and revolution in Russia; founded his own publishing firm; and befriended former president Ulysses S. Grant, supervising the publication of Grant’s Memoirs. The Life of Mark Twain is the first multi-volume biography of Samuel Clemens to appear in more than a century and has already been hailed as the definitive Twain biography.

This study seeks to explain the types of strategies party elites use to attract voters. How do party elites decide which kinds of incentives to offer, at what period, in what way, and to which groups? This study investigates the efficacy of competing and overlapping class and ethnic cleavages. Incentive theory suggests that organizations will offer three types of appeals: material (tangible rewards), solidary (enjoyment through participation), and purposive (policies and programs). First, using U.S. Census data, this study examines the social context of Hawaii in terms of ethnic and class characteristics. Second, using interviews with party elites, it explores the kinds of appeals new Democrats used. Third, using precinct-level election results and neighborhood characteristics, this study examines the party's coalition of class and ethnic groups. New Democrats in Hawaii shifted from a class-based appeal to an ethnic-based appeal over time. Party elites found that class-based appeals were effective to gain power. However, once they became the majority party, Democrats found that appeals to Japanese-Americans were a particularly successful strategy. Democratic politicians continued to rely on the latter's allegiance. The context of two large ethnic groups (i.e., Caucasians and Japanese) and many smaller ones allowed the party to solidify their ties to Japanese voters. Hence, party elites, constrained by the social context, exploited ethnic differences to maintain their electoral coalition

Major Motion Picture based on Dark Alliance and starring Jeremy Renner, "Kill the Messenger," to be be released in Fall 2014 In August 1996, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Gary Webb stunned the world with a series of articles in the San Jose Mercury News reporting the results of his year-long investigation into the roots of the crack cocaine epidemic in America, specifically in Los Angeles. The series, titled “Dark Alliance,” revealed that for the better part of a decade, a Bay Area drug ring sold tons of cocaine to Los Angeles street gangs and funneled millions in drug profits to the CIA-backed Nicaraguan Contras. Gary Webb pushed his investigation even further in his book, Dark Alliance: The CIA, The Contras, and the Crack Cocaine Explosion. Drawing from then newly declassified documents, undercover DEA audio and videotapes that had never been publicly released, federal court testimony, and interviews, Webb demonstrates how our government knowingly allowed massive amounts of drugs and money to change hands at the expense of our communities. Webb’s own stranger-than-fiction experience is also woven into the book. His excoriation by the media—not because of any wrongdoing on his part, but by an insidious process of innuendo and suggestion that in effect blamed Webb for the implications of the story—had been all but predicted. Webb was warned off doing a CIA expose by a former Associated Press journalist who lost his job when, years before, he had stumbled onto the germ of the “Dark Alliance” story. And though Internal investigations by both the CIA and the Justice Department eventually vindicated Webb, he had by then been pushed out of the Mercury News and gone to work for the California State Legislature Task Force on Government Oversight. He died in 2004.
