Late one dark April night in 1775, a young doctor from Concord leaves the Lexington home of his fiancee and her family; he is unexpectedly drawn into an alarm being spread across the countryside of colonial Massachusetts (and becomes a key participant) warning of an impending invasion by the king's troops from Boston. As the rebellion unfolds, Dr. Samuel Prescott and his family, as well as Lydia Mulliken and her family, face the difficulties of war. Samuel's obligations take him from eastern Massachusetts to Ticonderoga in New York, and from Boston to the coastline of Maine. Meanwhile, Lydia is focused on helping her widowed mother care for and protect two sisters and a younger brother while three other brothers are off fighting with the Continental Army; two of them participate in the stand on Lexington Green and the Battle of Bunker Hill. Both families deal with tragedy and unwavering hope as they endure the struggle for the birth of a nation. Throughout the ordeal, Lydia and Samuel, kept apart by individual and family needs, balance their endless desire to be reunited with the continual sacrifice and hardships of the fight for liberty. The spirit, determination, and resilience of people like those reflected in this story, many who were real people, created a new nation through these pivotal moments and battles of the American Revolution.

This unique study is the first large-scale sociological analysis of teacher burnout, linking it with alienation, commitment, and turnover in the educational profession. In the process of doing so, Anthony Gary Dworkin uncovers some startling trends that challenge previous assumptions held by public school administrators. Urban public school districts spend up to several million dollars annually on programs intended to rekindle enthusiasm among their teachers, hoping thereby to reduce the turnover rates. They also assume that enthusiastic teachers will heighten student achievement. Yet data presented in Teacher Burnout in the Public Schools challenge these suppositions. Dworkins research shows teacher entrapment, rather than teacher turnover, as the greater problem in education today. Teachers are now more likely to spend their entire working lifetime disliking their careers (and sometimes their students), rather than quitting their jobs, and Dworkin proposes that principals, more than any other school personnel, can do much to break the functional linkage between school-related stress and teacher burnout. The authors findings also indicate that burned-out teachers pose a minimal threat to the achievement of most children, but that they do have an adverse impact on brighter students. Teacher Burnout in the Public Schools includes an inventory of supported propositions and three levels of policy recommendations. These important policy recommendations suggest substantial organizational changes in the nature of the training of public school teachers in the college educational curriculum, in the teacher employment and deployment practices of school districts, as well as in the administrative style of school principals.

Although a painter and decorator-cum-signwriter-cum-cartoonist, he's never taken a break from his life as a full-time football fan. He's made a name for himself covering over red paint with white for free. He's visited every country in Europe and flown all over the rest of the world to watch Leeds play. If Leeds organised a five-a-side on the moon, he'd be on the first shuttle flight there. Travelling the world to watch hundreds of players run around acres of grass, he's also found time to drink gallons of ale, see oceans of flesh and protect hundreds of animals. He's saved lobsters in Barcelona, clay pigeons in Worksop, frogs in Kuala Lumpur and worms - yes, worms - in Yorkshire. He's been shot at in Greece, run over in Denmark, frightened the king in Sweden and had a beer with an elephant in Bangkok. All this and still found the time to never miss a match or another chance to rid the world of the evil that is red in all its forms. Behind him are almost four decades of Leeds, lunacy, laughter and white paint.

In Streetlights and Shadows, Gary Klein debunks the conventional wisdom about how to make decisions. He takes ten commonly accepted claims about decision making and shows that they are better suited for the laboratory than for life. The standard advice works well when everything is clear, but the tough decisions involve shadowy conditions of complexity and ambiguity. Gathering masses of information, for example, works if the information is accurate and complete—but that doesn't often happen in the real world. (Think about the careful risk calculations that led to the downfall of the Wall Street investment houses.) Klein offers more realistic ideas about how to make decisions in real-life settings.
