He begins with Eckhardt's German-American family heritage and then traces his progression from labor lawyer, political organizer, and cofounder of the progressive Texas Observer magazine to Texas state legislator and U.S. congressman. Keith describes many of Eckhardt's legislative battles and victories, including the passage of the Open Beaches Act and the creation of the Big Thicket National Preserve, the struggle to limit presidential war-making ability through the War Powers Act, and the hard fight to shape President Carter's energy policy, as well as Eckhardt's work in Texas to tax the oil and gas industry. The only thorough recounting of the life of a memorable, important, and flamboyant man, Eckhardt also recalls the last great era of progressive politics in the twentieth century and the key players who strove to make Texas and the United States a more just, inclusive society.

Riding With the 19th Texas Cavalry in the War West of the Mississippi 1862-1865 is the story of William Hardy Bennett’s Confederate military service as a Private in Co. B of the 19th Texas Cavalry Regiment during the War for Southern Independence and his experiences during Reconstruction that followed the war. He enlisted with the Mesquite Light Horse Militia in Dallas County, Texas on 8 January 1861 some one and a half months before the citizens of Texas ratified the State’s Ordinance of Secession. Some fourteen months later on 21 March 1862, he enlisted with Captain Allen Beard’s Company, Burford’s Texas Cavalry in Dallas, Texas to defend his family, Dallas County, and the State of Texas against a Yankee army determined to invade and destroy the State. Beard’s Company became Co. B of the 19th Texas Cavalry Regiment and was an important part of Colonel William Henry Parsons’ Texas Brigade that fought with distinction in the Trans-Mississippi Department. Hardy fought in some fifty engagements and was often in harm’s way, but he survived and returned to Dallas County, Texas after the war and prospered despite the economic and political problems that plagued the county during Reconstruction.

The story of Wyndham Clifford Watts is one of humble beginnings and exceptional ingenuity; originally from Gwent in Wales, W Clifford Watts moved to South Cave in Yorkshire and, in 1937, bought a Model T Ford and began delivering farm produce. With one successful hauling endeavour under his belt, he decided to become a supplier of building materials, a business for which there was great demand at the time. Again, he was successful and obtained his first contract with F Hall at Brough, who used his materials to build the Blackburn Aircraft runway. By 1939, W Clifford Watts had a number of employees under him and had joined the war effort by supplying much needed sand bags to the ARP posts around East Yorkshire. After further rapid expansion of the company, W Clifford Watts was incorporated to become a private limited company in 1944. The company would have been nothing without the mechanical support of the various vehicles and machines utilised for the work. This book includes 184 stunning pictures ranging from archival black and white photos of Fordson 7Vs, during the construction of RAF airfields in 1941, to extensive colour pages, depicting the large scale quarrying operations carried out by the company. Some of the vehicles that donned the W Clifford Watts livery were Foden S21 eight-wheelers, Dodge KT900s, MAN six-wheeler cement mixers, 1995 Scanias, 1974 Leyland Bisons and DAF CF six-wheelers, to name just a few.

Long lost relatives come out of the woodworks. Mythical monsters are being summoned from distant quarters of the earth. Everyone is worried about Alex, too, because of the strange way his mother is acting toward hima well as for the strange way Alex, himself, is acting. But at least new friends offer comfort along the way. Alex just hopes that somehow his haunted house is going to save his family!

While we were trained to be soldiers and I witnessed acts of bravery every day, we were still part of our generation; and our generation was closing down universities, protesting, and generally fucking up the country. Our country was as divided as it hadnt been since the Civil War. Us? We as soldiers were conflicted, torn between a culture that included everyone that you ever knew and the brothers that we served with. We grew our hair to the military limit, listened to music, carried on a personal protest about something or the other, and smoked pot. Racism was part of the inhuman view of our adversaries. Just as our fathers had called their enemies Japs and Krauts, we called ours Gooks. So the influence on eighteen-, nineteen-, and twenty-year-olds was kind of warped, especially if you spent most of your time in the bush. While I plead guilty of all of those things at eighteen, they are not what I became or what my returning brothers and sisters became. Every soldier has a story to tell, each with differ nuances, but the overall experience and attitudes were about the same. I saw bravery and craziness in every possible way. The bottom line, in my humble opinion, is that truth is stranger than fiction. While this account is fictional, the events are not. In truth, I dont do justice to what I observed and was a part of.

South Davis County is bounded by the majestic Wasatch Mountain Range to the east and the Great Salt Lake to the west. Bountiful, Centerville, Farmington, and Kaysville are the major population centersall originating as early Mormon settlements. Concerned that their livestock might harm new crops and gardens being planted in Salt Lake City, their leader, Brigham Young, sent herds of cattle, mules, and horses north to graze along the lakeshore in 1847. Small farming communities established the following spring supplied goods and produce to the growing populations of Salt Lake City to Ogden. Organized as Davis County in 1850, Farmington was the center of government. Railroad service, established in 1870, allowed the farmers and ranchers to reach markets within hours of harvesting. And in 1956, a six-foot pipeline was completed, delivering water from the Weber River to the communities along the front. Rapid expansion has resulted, but the pioneer spirit still prevails.
