Travel and tourism have a long association with the notion of transformation, both in terms of self and social collectives. What is surprising, however, is that this association has, on the whole, remained relatively underexplored and unchallenged, with little in the way of a corpus of academic literature surrounding these themes. Instead, much of the literature to date has focused upon describing and categorising tourism and travel experiences from a supply-side perspective, with travellers themselves defined in terms of their motivations and interests. While the tourism field can lay claim to several significant milestone contributions, there have been few recent attempts at a rigorous re-theorization of the issues arising from the travel/transformation nexus. The opportunity to explore the socio-cultural dimensions of transformation through travel has thus far been missed. Bringing together geographers, sociologists, cultural researchers, philosophers, anthropologists, visual researchers, literary scholars and heritage researchers, this volume explores what it means to transform through travel in a modern, mobile world. Despite efforts to widen participation, first-in-family students, as an equity group, remain severely under-represented in higher education internationally. Working in a Survival School documents how global educational policies trickle down and influence school cultures and the lives of educators and educational leaders. The research traces the everyday work and experience of educators within an all-boys Catholic college suffering an unprecedented decline in enrolment numbers. In short, it was a school in ‘survival mode.’ Drawing on Dorothy Smith’s scholarship on Institutional Ethnography, the authors document how the school operated and how its efforts to survive influenced the daily work of educators.Institutional ethnography reveals the school as a bounded space subject to a variety of competing local and translocal forces that are historical, political and economic in nature. In this groundbreaking book, Garth Myers uses African urban concepts and experiences to speak back to theoretical and practical concerns. It argues that the SCP has operated in a political vacuum, without recognition of the long and problematic histories and cultural politics of urban environmental governance in Eastern and Southern Africa. Focusing on an agropastoral society of southcentral Somalia, this book explores the seeming incompatibility of subsistence agriculture and development goals. Based upon survey and ethnographic research carried out among the Rahanweyn, the study pays particular attention to economic activities, linking them with environmental factors as well as with history, culture, the division of labor and women's roles, family structure, demography, and herding and agriculture. How change can best be introduced into such a society is the central question of the book. The meaning of subsistence and its relationship to self-sufficiency and a survival threshold are examined within the context of an externally imposed market system. The implications of rapidly induced market involvement in a traditional society are looked at in light of data on a range of subsistence societies. The author argues for a redirection of development practices, making a case for the viability of a mixed agropastoral system that diverges little from the traditional subsistence patterns, and for peasant-centered development compatible with subsistence production, balancing national and international interests.
