Electron microscopy in the biological sciences can be divided into two disciplines. The first, concerned with high resolution detail of particles or periodic structures, is mostly based on sound theoretical principles of physics. The second, by far the larger discipline, is interested in the information obtainable from thin sections. The theoretical back ground to those groups of techniques for preparing and looking at thin sections is often inexact and "loose", for want of a better word. What should be chemistry is often closer to alchemy. This kind of electron microscopy is often enshrined with mystical recipes, handed down from generation to generation. Admittedly, many of the processes involved, such as those required to embed tissue in epoxy resins, involve multiple interconnected steps, which make it difficult to follow the details of anyone of these steps. If all these steps are shrouded in some mystery, however, can one really trust the final image that emerges on the EM screen? When we present the data in some semi quantitative form is there really no better way to do it than to categorize the parameters with ++, +/-, etc? What happens when one labels the sections with antibodies? Does the whole business necess arily need to be more of an "art" than a "science"? Upon reflecting on these problems in 1981, I had the impression that many of the multi-authored textbooks that existed then (and that have appeared since) tended to exacerbate or at least perpetuate this

Despite defeating his opponent Pompeius Magnus at Pharsalus, and the latter’s subsequent murder, Caesar still faced a determined opposition in the Civil War that had engulfed the late Roman Republic. Having become entangled in the intrigues and wars of the East, Caesar gave his opponents time to regroup under the lead of Metellus Scipio and Cato the Younger, scions of two of the Republic’s greatest families. Under their leadership Caesar’s dominance of the Republic was seriously challenged, culminating in a decisive battle at Thapsus in what is now Tunisia. Gareth Sampson describes the campaigns that set the context for the battle, including the role played by the various regional powers drawn into the Roman Civil War. He then recounts the battle itself in detail, analysing the relative strengths of the armies involved, their organization, equipment and tactics. He assesses the opposing commanders and the strategies on the day which led to another victory for Caesar. He concludes with a discussion of the bloody aftermath of the battle and the myths that developed around the deaths of Caesar’s opponents.

The structure of the programme: There are two main guiding principles for the way in which the programme is organized: Firstly, the workbooks are grouped according to the Key Roles of Management. There are two core modules which focus on the personal skills required by all managers to help underwrite competence in all areas. Manage Activities describes the principles of managing the processes and activities of any organisation in its efforts to satisfy the needs of their customers. Manage Resources looks at the acquisition, control and monitoring of financial and other resources. Manage People looks at the principles of leadership, managing performance and developing people. Manage Information looks at the acquisition, storage and use of information for communication, problem solving and decision making. Together, these key roles provide a comprehensive description of the fundamental principles of management as it applies in all organisations. Secondly, the workbooks are grouped according to levels of management. The series is organised on two levels - representing different levels of management seniority and responsibility. Level 4 represents first line management. In accredited programmes this is equivalent to N/SVQ level 4, Certificate in Management or CMS. Level 5 is equivalent to middle/senior management and is accredited at N/SVQ level 5, Diploma in Management or DMS. Finally, the programme covers all of the knowledge and principles in respect of all units of competence in the MCI standards at levels 4 and level 5. In the mid-first century BC, despite its military victories elsewhere, the Roman Empire faced a rival power in the east; the Parthian Empire. The first war between two superpowers of the ancient world had resulted in the total defeat of Rome and the death of Marcus Crassus. When Rome collapsed into Civil War in the 40s BC, the Parthians took the opportunity to invade and conquer the Middle East and drive Rome back into Europe.
