Originally published in 1996. This volume brings together articles by Gail Paradise Kelly spanning a twenty-year period. It represents an aspect of the history of the feminist movement as related to education. Early articles from 1970 onwards consider experiences of the students' campus feminist movement of the late '60s and then move on to focus on education of women in the Third World. Some co-authored articles are included which looked at school process and directions for research. As a whole the articles input to the discussion on how to study education and its meaning in society, with particular reference to feminist thinking.
Originally published in 1989. This detailed bibliography focuses on women’s education in the developing nations of Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean and the Middle East. It contains annotations for about 1200 published works in English, French, Spanish, Portuguese and German. The entries include extensive research journal, monograph and book literature items, including chapters hidden in books that don’t have women or education as their main theme. The citations are organised thematically but with geographic divisions within each of the 15 sections and each entry has a decently detailed summary. It is prefaced by a useful article written by Gail Kelly on the directions in research at the time and the development of women-centric approaches.
In Emergent Issues in Education, leading scholars in comparative education and in the politics, sociology, anthropology, and economics of education illuminate worldwide trends in critical issues that confront policymakers and practitioners in different national settings. Among the topics raised and analyzed are the organization, governance, and financing of education; the content of curriculum, texts, and tests; and the quality and nature of teacher training. Among the issues examined is the tension that has emerged between the imperative to achieve equality of educational opportunity and the concern of educational decision makers to maintain and upgrade the quality of academic offerings. Aspects of this tension are manifested in the reform movements of the 1980s, especially the "excellence movement" that has resurfaced in the United States. Reform movements are evident in countries that have experienced increased enrollment at all levels of schooling in the post-World War II period. In the United States, as elsewhere, there has been a reassessment of the relevance of education to the economy and polity, and of the role of government and industry in education.
In late April 1975 the war that raged in Vietnam for decades came to an end as the American-backed government of South Vietnam collapsed. Out of the territories that had once been French Indochina came over 200,000 Cambodian, Laotian, and Vietnamese refugees fleeing by plane, by boat, or on foot. Some left under U.S. government auspices; others setout on their own. This book is a chronicle of the 1975 flight of Vietnamese from their country. It traces the departure from Vietnam and the resettlement of 130,000 of these refugees in the United States and focuses on the process by which Vietnamese went from refugees to immigrants.

In 1845, a series of disastrous fires nearly crippled the economy of Bristol. Earlier in the century, the community had become one of the leading clock producers in the world, and this astounding success spawned many other local businesses. As the factories multiplied, so did the need for fire protection; unfortunately, when the whirlwind of fires struck, Bristol was unprepared and suffered heavy losses.
