Originally published in 1996. This volume brings together articles by Gail Paradise Kelly spanning a twenty-year period. It represents an aspect of the history of the feminist movement as related to education. Early articles from 1970 onwards consider experiences of the students' campus feminist movement of the late '60s and then move on to focus on education of women in the Third World. Some co-authored articles are included which looked at school process and directions for research. As a whole the articles input to the discussion on how to study education and its meaning in society, with particular reference to feminist thinking.
A strategic outpost in the Eastern Mediterranean, Cyprus was vital to British imperial ambitions in the East as the Ottoman Empire grew increasingly fragile in the nineteenth century. Here, Gail Dallas Hook describes the British occupation of Cyprus from 1878 to 1914, during which British government, science, and capital investment were installed alongside a new British colonial community, building 'British Cyprus' long before the island became a formal part of the British Empire. Protectorate Cyprus further demonstrates how the British attempted to bring 'good government' to Cyprus yet failed to resolve the issues of Muslim and Greek Orthodox divisions. It is a unique representation of Britain's 'informal empire' before World War I that has been little studied. Protectorate Cyprus is a crucial addition to the history of the British Empire.
Originally published in 1989. This detailed bibliography focuses on women’s education in the developing nations of Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean and the Middle East. It contains annotations for about 1200 published works in English, French, Spanish, Portuguese and German. The entries include extensive research journal, monograph and book literature items, including chapters hidden in books that don’t have women or education as their main theme. The citations are organised thematically but with geographic divisions within each of the 15 sections and each entry has a decently detailed summary. It is prefaced by a useful article written by Gail Kelly on the directions in research at the time and the development of women-centric approaches.
