Because magnetically confined plasmas are generally not found in a state of thermodynamic equilibrium, they have been studied extensively with methods of applied kinetic theory. In closed magnetic field line confinement devices such as the tokamak, non-Maxwellian distortions usually occur as a result of auxiliary heating and transport. In magnetic mirror configurations even the intended steady state plasma is far from local thermodynamic equilibrium because of losses along open magnetic field lines. In both of these major fusion devices, kinetic models based on the Boltzmann equation with Fokker-Planck collision terms have been successful in representing plasma behavior. The heating of plasmas by energetic neutral beams or microwaves, the production and thermalization of a-particles in thermonuclear reactor plasmas, the study of runaway electrons in tokamaks, and the performance of two-energy compo nent fusion reactors are some examples of processes in which the solution of kinetic equations is appropriate and, moreover, generally necessary for an understanding of the plasma dynamics. Ultimately, the problem is to solve a nonlinear partial differential equation for the distribution function of each charged plasma species in terms of six phase space variables and time. The dimensionality of the problem may be reduced through imposing certain symmetry conditions. For example, fewer spatial dimensions are needed if either the magnetic field is taken to be uniform or the magnetic field inhomogeneity enters principally through its variation along the direction of the field.
Promised Land recounts the fortunes and misfortunes of the fictional Buechler family as they struggle to build a life and a home in a new world. The story follows the family and their community through a tumultuous adolescence to maturity during the turn-of-the-century homestead rush in the western Canadian prairies. Love and Hate finds Carl, the eldest, driven by necessity into the harsh climate and bitter conflict of the relatively unpeopled wilderness of the Assiniboia Territory. Carl finds love and security, cooperation and community amongst the brutalized people already there. He labours, struggles and suffers with them to build a home and a life for his desperate family who have nothing left but hope. Carl cannot fail; the consequences are too horrible to contemplate! He has promised and up until now, he has always kept his promises.
The Confederation Poets were a group of Canadian English-language poets of the late nineteenth century whose work expressed the national consciousness inspired by the Confederation of 1867. Their transcendental and romantic praise of the Canadian landscape would go on to dominate Canadian poetry until the twentieth century. They were also called the Maple Tree School due to how their verses portrayed a touching love for the Canadian landscape. The term ‘Confederation Poets’ was coined by the Canadian professor and literary critic Malcolm Ross, who singled out four poets: Charles G. D. Roberts (1860–1943); Bliss Carman (1861–1929); Archibald Lampman (1861–1899); and Duncan Campbell Scott (1862–1947). They composed poems in a classic form, often on themes of love or philosophical speculation against the backdrop of nature; and they all reacted to Canada’s growing industrialisation, favouring a retreat to the as yet unspoiled wilderness. This comprehensive volume of the Delphi Poets Series presents the complete poetical works of the four principal members of the Confederation Poets, with numerous illustrations and the usual Delphi bonus material. 27 VIEWS of RALEIGH: The City of Oaks in Prose & Poetry features the work of twenty-seven (plus two) Raleighites who create a literary montage of North Carolina's capital city in fiction, essays, and poetry. Novelists, poets, essayists, journalists, and even a science fiction writer capture the city in a variety of genres—spanning neighborhoods, generations, cultural and racial experiences, historic eras—reflecting the social, historic, and creative fabric of Raleigh. As Wilton Barnhardt writes in the book's introduction, “We seem to have flourished not because we have solved all the problems of the New South, despite leading the way now and again, but because we the citizens of Raleigh decided to be erudite, cultured, enriched, and entertained . . .
This book covers the biology, exploitation and conservation of the sea bass, a species of major commercial importance. Sea Bass will be an invaluable reference work for fisheries workers, fish biologists and aquaculturists involved and interested in the biology and exploitation of this important species.
The future of mankind depends on ever-increasing agricultural production to provide food, fibre, fuel and other essential commodities. This can only be achieved through a sound knowledge of the plants which feature prominently in agriculture. This book describes these plants in detail, together with the products which are obtained from them. The opening chapter on world population and food supply is followed by a general introduction to plant structure. The major part of the book then considers economically important field crops and pasture plants of temperate and subtropical regions on a family-by-family basis. Fruit crops, flowers and trees are not considered. The book concludes with a discussion of physiological principles of crop growth and yield. This is an introductory text, suitable for the teaching of agricultural botany to undergraduate students, and is intended to bridge the gap between classical botany and agronomy.
Amara Ira stands out. She really can’t help it. In the Seven Cities, shored up against the void outside by soaring concrete walls no one sees over, there is only white, grey, silver, and gold. Amara was born in colors that are forbidden even to wear, and it sucks. Her mother’s never satisfied, her picture-perfect sister is almost terrified of her, and everyone is constantly asking her, “Were you born looking like that?” as if she’d do this to herself. Provided she can pass “betrothal training”, Amara is mentally preparing to be handed off at eighteen to whatever man her mother can pay richly enough to take her. When Crown Prince Atlas (kinder and much more perceptive than she’d given him credit for) takes an interest in her, Amara’s fortunes seem ready to change. But there’s so much she doesn’t know. Somewhere else—somewhere that will strain the bounds of Amara’s imagination and shatter her understanding of the world and of herself—someone is watching her. A woman whose name lives in horror stories told to future brides, whose fate is bound into that of the golden royal family and into Amara’s own. That woman is sharpening her blades and saying to herself: “It’s time to bring her home. The gods are awake, and we have work to do.”
