Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts, which has appeared in semi-annual volumes since 1969, is de voted to the recording, summarizing and indexing of astronomical publications throughout the world. It is prepared under the auspices of the International Astronomical Union (according to a resolution adopted at the 14th General Assembly in 1970). Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts aims to present a comprehensive documentation of literature in all fields of astronomy and astrophysics. Every effort will be made to ensure that the average time interval between the date of receipt of the original literature and publication of the abstracts will not exceed eight months. This time interval is near to that achieved by monthly abstracting journals, com pared to which our system of accumulating abstracts for about six months offers the advantage of greater convenience for the user. Volume 6 contains literature published in 1971 and received before March 15, 1972; some older liter ature which was received late and which is not recorded in earlier volumes is also included.

In three parts, this volume in the AP-LS series explores the phenomena of captivity and risk management, guided and informed by the theory, method, and policy of psychological jurisprudence. The authors present a controversial thesis that demonstrates how the forces of captivity and risk management are sustained by several interdependent "conditions of control." These conditions impose barriers to justice and set limits on citizenship for one and all. Situated at the nexus of political/social theory, mental health law and jurisprudential ethics, the book examines and critiques constructs such as offenders and victims; self and society; therapeutic and restorative; health; harm; and community. Throughout history, the powerful have created laws, developed agencies to enforce those laws, and established institutions to punish lawbreakers. Maintaining the social order to their advantage resulted in the systematic repression of disadvantaged groups—the “dangerous classes.” The third edition retains a historical approach to exploring patterns of social control and, through current examples, demonstrates how those strategies continue today. The authors trace the roots of race, class, and gender bias in how laws are written, interpreted, and applied. The management of dangerous classes is not a recent phenomenon; there is a long history of keeping those who derive the least advantage from the status quo (and therefore pose the greatest threat) under control. There was and is one system of justice for the privileged and a very different system for the less privileged. The criminal justice system—from the law to daily operations of the police, courts, and corrections—generally comes down hardest on those with the least amount of power and influence and is the most lenient with those with the most power and influence. The book raises critical questions. What is a crime? What is law? Whose interests are served by the law and the criminal justice system? What patterns are repeated generation after generation? How does the criminal justice system relate to larger issues such as social inequality, social class, race, and gender? Contemplation of these topics contributes to informed public dialogue and careful deliberation about the present state and the future of criminal justice.

The notion of stability of functional equations of several variables in the sense used here had its origins more than half a century ago when S. Ulam posed the fundamental problem and Donald H. Hyers gave the first significant partial solution in 1941. The subject has been revised and de veloped by an increasing number of mathematicians, particularly during the last two decades. Three survey articles have been written on the subject by D. H. Hyers (1983), D. H. Hyers and Th. M. Rassias (1992), and most recently by G. L. Forti (1995). None of these works included proofs of the results which were discussed. Furthermore, it should be mentioned that wider interest in this subject area has increased substantially over the last years, yet the pre sentation of research has been confined mainly to journal articles. The time seems ripe for a comprehensive introduction to this subject, which is the purpose of the present work. This book is the first to cover the classical results along with current research in the subject. An attempt has been made to present the material in an integrated and self-contained fashion. In addition to the main topic of the stability of certain functional equa tions, some other related problems are discussed, including the stability of the convex functional inequality and the stability of minimum points. A sad note. During the final stages of the manuscript our beloved co author and friend Professor Donald H. Hyers passed away.

This book was developed to assist the coal and metal/nonmetal underground mining industries in their efforts to reduce the exposure of workers to aerosols and gases from diesel-powered equipment. It includes information collected by researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health/Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (NIOSH/OMSHR). Prior to the production of this text, the knowledge on this complex issue was fragmented. The goal of this volume is to make the information available in one easy-to-use reference. The book includes comprehensive, mine-specific programs for use by mechanics, mine ventilation engineers, industrial hygienists, mine managers, union health and safety representatives, and personnel responsible for the acquisition of diesel vehicles, engines, exhaust aftertreatment systems, fuels, and lubricants. The description of methods to reduce exposure to diesel aerosols includes curtailment of diesel particulate matter and gaseous emissions at their source, and controlling airborne pollutants with ventilation and personal protective equipment. This information should also help researchers in industry, government, and academia to identify areas that need to be addressed in future research and development efforts.
