This fourth volume in the comprehensive series “fills a gap in the existing narrative” of WWII’s Mediterranean air war (Journal of Military History). The fourth volume in this momentous series commences with the attacks on the Italian island fortress of Pantellaria, which led to its surrender and occupation achieved almost by air attack alone. The account continues with the ultimately successful, but at times very hard fought, invasions of Sicily and southern Italy as burgeoning Allied air power, now with full US involvement, increasingly dominated the skies overhead. The successive occupations of Sardinia and Corsica are also covered in detail. This is essentially the story of the tactical air forces up to the point when Rome was occupied, just at the same time as the Normandy landings were occurring in northwest France. With regards to the long-range tactical role of the Allied heavy bombers, only the period from May to October is examined, while they remained based in North Africa, with the narrative continuing in a future volume. This volume also delves into the story of “the soldiers’ air force.” Frequently overshadowed by more immediate newsworthy events elsewhere, the soldiers’ struggle was often of an equally Homeric nature. “No future publication on the Mediterranean air war will be credible without use of this series.” —Air Power History

Selected for the task of researching a story with political overtones, fasttrack, up-and-coming Inspector Tim Medway has fears for his future promotion, added to when, as a result, he is seconded to a County Force to help investigate a murder that may be linked. His new assignment, along with the local officer in charge of the case, takes him into the world of a Wildlife Safari Park where the victim had been working. As the investigation proceeds, Medway has to balance helping to find the killer with a need to test the death’s relevance to the political aspects, not all of which is he free to reveal to his colleague. The situation develops on two levels. While the locally based Inspector Mills deals with the ‘routine work’, as he calls it, Medway has to handle the high-flying associates of an MEP who are increasingly involved in the unfolding events. As dead-ends are reached in the search for the truth, the policeman finds inspiration from his love of the theatre and, more surprisingly, guidance from some of the animals that inhabit the Park – among them the flamboyant dancing of the East African Crowned Crane.

Expedition to the North Coast, and by Jerome and Emily Ford, founders of the Mendocino Lumber Co., and the fraud investigation of Thomas J. Henley. It tells of the founding of Mendocino and Ft. Bragg, the experiences of the Chinese community, the role of "Dog Hole" schooners, and the opium trade. The book concludes with excerpts from the diary of Etta Stephens Pullen, a pioneer who relocated from Maine to Little River, California, and the transcript of an interview with Lucy Young, a Wailaki-Lassik Indian telling the grim story of genocide that was going on coincidental with events in Etta Pullen's diary. Never before has this coastal segment of Northern California been studied in a comprehensive historical book. All of the earliest participant groups, Indians, Yankees and immigrants from the Midwestern and Southern states, northern European immigrants and Chinese, are presented. Wherever possible excerpts from primary sources, written by the people who made this history, are directly quoted. This work will become an example for other Northwest coastal regions to tell their own stories for later generations to enjoy.

The Gaysh tells the story of the emergence of an army following early attempts to protect the trade routes in and through Aden. From the first commercial treaty with the Abdali Sultan in 1802, various efforts were made to avoid looting, leading to the annexing of Aden Port by the East India Company in 1839. It was not until the Turks threatened to invade in the First World War that a regular army unit was formed. The 1st Yemen Infantry did not see action, and there was a move, on financial grounds, to disband it in 1928. Because a need remained, the decision was taken to replace its policing role by airpower, supported by a small force of levies to defend the bases, including a camel corps. The book takes that story on, chronologically, through the Aden Protectorate Levies' growing strength and its relationship with the British Government and its policies. It includes its part in the Silver Jubilee celebration parade in 1935, pre-1939 military operations, its role in WWII, its involvement in the evacuation of the Jews following the Arab/Jewish riots in Crater in 1947, and on to the creation of the Federation and the withdrawal of the British Army in 1967.

Intellectuals in Politics in the Greek World, first published in 1984, was the first comprehensive study of this recurrent theme in political sociology with specific reference to antiquity, and led to significant revaluation of the role of intellectuals in everyday political life. The term ‘intellectual’ is carefully defined, and figures as diverse as Pythagoras, Plato and Aristotle; Isocrates, Heracleides of Ponteius and Clearchus of Soli are discussed. The author examines the difference between the success of an intellectual politician, like Solon, and the failure of those such as Plato who attempted to mould society to abstract ideals. It is concluded that, ultimately, most philosophers were conspicuously unsuccessful when they intervened in politics: citizens regarded them as propagandists for their rulers, while rulers treated them as intellectual ornaments. The result was that many thinkers retreated to inter-scholastic disputation where the political objects of discussion increasingly became far removed from contemporary reality.

This book is the documented record of flying small aircraft over a fifty-four-year period as a FAA certificated private pilot. With exceptions for the eighteen married years that I flew very little (or not at all), each chapter tells of the yearly flying experiences for the calendar years beginning with 1956 and ending with 2010. I used notes recorded in my log books to recall memories of the flights. Now retired after a thirty-eight-year career with McDonnell Aircraft Co., then McDonnell-Douglas Corp., then Boeing (as the names changed), my career began as a FAA certificated airframe and powerplant mechanic with Ozark Airlines based in St. Louis, Missouri. Four years of the ten-year period I worked for Ozark were on a military leave of absence while I served in the U.S. Air Force. Frequently, I tell of related incidents and stories of interest that relate to the particular time period. Piloting airplanes was not my career choice; however, being active as an airplane mechanic complimented the flying activities nicely. The FAA has recognized my contributions to building and maintaining the safest aviation system in the world by presenting me with the Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award for fifty years as a pilot, and by also presenting the Charles Taylor Master Mechanic Award for fifty years as an A&P Mechanic. Another branch of the FAA was not so complimentary, however, as my flying days ended abruptly in 2011 when the FAA Medical Center denied my third class medical certificate over a series of very trivial issues and multiple letter exchanges. The details are documented in the epilogue of my book.
