As a first lieutenant in Bravo Company of the Third Battalion, 187th Infantry, Frank Boccia led a platoon in two intense battles in the Vietnamese mountains in April and May 1969: Dong Ngai and the grinding, 11-day battle of Dong Ap Bia--the Mountain of the Crouching Beast, in Vietnamese, or Hamburger Hill as it is popularly known. The Rakkasans, the 3/187th, are the most highly decorated unit in the history of the United States Army, and two of those decorations were awarded for these two battles. This vivid account of the author's first seven months in Vietnam gives special attention to the events at Dong Ap Bia, following the hard-hit 3/187th hour by hour through its repeated assaults on the mountain, against an unseen enemy in an ideal defensive position. It also corrects several errors that have persisted in histories and official reports of the battle. Beyond describing his own experiences and reactions, the author writes, "I want to convey the real face of war, both its mindless carnage and its nobility of spirit. Above all, I want to convey what happened to both the casual reader and the military historian and make them aware of the extraordinary spirit of the men of First Platoon, Bravo Company. They were ordinary men doing extraordinary things.
In this monograph, leading researchers in the world of numerical analysis, partial differential equations, and hard computational problems study the properties of solutions of the Navier–Stokes partial differential equations on (x, y, z, t) ∈ R3 × [0, T]. Initially converting the PDE to a system of integral equations, the authors then describe spaces A of analytic functions that house solutions of this equation, and show that these spaces of analytic functions are dense in the spaces S of rapidly decreasing and infinitely differentiable functions. This method benefits from the following advantages: The functions of S are nearly always conceptual rather than explicit Initial and boundary conditions of solutions of PDE are usually drawn from the applied sciences, and as such, they are nearly always piece-wise analytic, and in this case, the solutions have the same properties When methods of approximation are applied to functions of A they converge at an exponential rate, whereas methods of approximation applied to the functions of S converge only at a polynomial rate Enables sharper bounds on the solution enabling easier existence proofs, and a more accurate and more efficient method of solution, including accurate error bounds Following the proofs of denseness, the authors prove the existence of a solution of the integral equations in the space of functions A ∩ R3 × [0, T], and provide an explicit novel algorithm based on Sinc approximation and Picard–like iteration for computing the solution. Additionally, the authors include appendices that provide a custom Mathematica program for computing solutions based on the explicit algorithmic approximation procedure, and which supply explicit illustrations of these computed solutions.
This book addresses the properties of particles in colloidal suspensions. It has a focus on particle aggregates and the dependency of their physical behaviour on morphological parameters. For this purpose, relevant theories and methodological tools are reviewed and applied to selected examples. The book is divided into four main chapters. The first of them introduces important measurement techniques for the determination of particle size and interfacial properties in colloidal suspensions. A further chapter is devoted to the physico-chemical properties of colloidal particles—highlighting the interfacial phenomena and the corresponding interactions between particles. The book’s central chapter examines the structure-property relations of colloidal aggregates. This comprises concepts to quantify size and structure of aggregates, models and numerical tools for calculating the (light) scattering and hydrodynamic properties of aggregates, and a discussion on van-der-Waals and double layer interactions between aggregates. It is illustrated how such knowledge may significantly enhance the characterisation of colloidal suspensions. The final part of the book refers to the information, ideas and concepts already presented in order to address technical aspects of the preparation of colloidal suspensions—in particular the performance of relevant dispersion techniques and the stability of colloidal suspensions.

What can we know about the everyday experiences of Christians during the fourth, fifth, and sixth centuries? How did non-elite men and women, enslaved, freed, and free persons, who did not renounce sex or choose voluntary poverty become Christian? They neither led a religious community nor did they live in entirely Christian settings. In this period, an age marked by "extraordinary" Christians--wonderworking saints, household ascetics, hermits, monks, nuns, pious aristocrats, pilgrims, and bishops--ordinary Christians went about their daily lives, in various occupations, raising families, sharing households, kitchens, and baths in religiously diverse cities. Occasionally they attended church liturgies, sought out local healers, and visited martyrs' shrines. Barely and rarely mentioned in ancient texts, common Christians remain nameless and undifferentiated. Unfinished Christians explores the sensory and affective dimensions of ordinary Christians who assembled for rituals. With precious few first-person accounts by common Christians, it relies on written sources not typically associated with lived religion: sermons, liturgical instruction books, and festal hymns. All three genres of writing are composed by clergy for use in ritual settings. Yet they may also provide glimpses of everyday Christians' lives and experiences. This book investigates the habits, objects, behaviors, and movements of ordinary Christians by mining festal preaching by John Chrysostom, Cyril of Jerusalem, Gregory of Nyssa, and Romanos the Melodist, among others. It also mines liturgical instructions to explore the psalms and other songs performed on various feast days. "Unfinished," then, connotes the creativity and agency of unremarkable Christians who engaged in making religious experiences: the "Christian-in-progress" who learns to work with material and bring something into being; the artisans who attended sermons; and, more widely, the bearers of embodied knowing.

2 Thessalonians is one of the most enigmatic letters in the New Testament, primarily because of its repeated insistence on its authorship by Paul, coupled with its warnings against forgery of Pauline letters. Modern scholarship has made a number of advances in the study of this letter, but the question of the authorship and purpose remain quite open. Hughes gives a detailed investigation of Graeco-Roman rhetorical traditions and their relationship to letters, and develops a consensus model for the identification of the various conventional parts of rhetorical discourses. He then offers an interpretation of 2 Thessalonians according to these rhetorical traditions. Given the rhetoric thus identified in the letter, an innovative theory is developed against Paul's authorship of 2 Thessalonians. In his final chapters, he suggests ways in which the pseudo-Pauline letters of the New Testament witness to a multiplicity of Pauline theologies after the Apostle's death-a diverse and pluriform 'legacy of Paul'.
This thesis focuses on nonlinear spectroscopy from a quantum optics perspective. First, it provides a detailed introduction to nonlinear optical signals; starting from Glauber’s photon counting formalism, it establishes the diagrammatic formulation, which forms the backbone of nonlinear molecular spectroscopy. The main body of the thesis investigates the impact of quantum correlations in entangled photon states on two-photon transitions, with a particular focus on the time-energy uncertainty, which restricts the possible simultaneous time and frequency resolution in measurements. It found that this can be violated with entangled light for individual transitions. The thesis then presents simulations of possible experimental setups that could exploit this quantum advantage. The final chapter is devoted to an application of the rapidly growing field of multidimensional spectroscopy to trapped ion chains, where it is employed to investigate nonequilibrium properties in quantum simulations.

This book provides a comprehensive and unified account of the structure and properties of crystalline binary adducts. Perhaps better known as molecular complexes and compounds, these crystals are currently estimated (from molecular recognition studies) to make up one quarter of the world's crystals, providing evidence for some sort of special attraction between the two components. DNA is perhaps the most famous example but others (hydrates, solvates, host-guest inclusion complexes, donor-acceptor compounds) pervade the whole body of solid state chemistry. Although much research has been published, there has never been a comprehensive and unified treatment of the whole field. This book has been designed to fill this gap, comparing and contrasting the various examples and the different types of interaction (hydrogen bonding, inclusion and localized or delocalized charge transfer). More than 600 figures, 200 tables and 3500 references are included in the book. Since most 'parent compounds' form a number of adducts, the fraction of crystalline binary adducts is only going to grow making this account just the 'tip of the iceberg'.
The present volume opens the Gmelin series on organogermanium compounds, that is, those compounds containing at least one germanium-to-carbon bond. This whole series is being coordinated by Professor J. Satge of the Universite Paul Sabatier in Toulouse. Germanium is of historical interest because its existence was predicted by Newlands in 1864 and by Mendeleeff in 1871 although it was not isolated until1887 by Winkler. Mendeleeff's predictions of the properties of germanium and its compounds by comparison with what was known of the chemistry of its neighbors, silicon and tin, proved remarkably accurate and included predictions of the existence of organic derivatives GeR and of their properties. 4 Although significant applications are as yet lacking for organogermanium compounds in contrast to organo-silicon, -tin, and -lead compounds there has been considerable interest in the parallel development of its chemistry. Up to 1983 about 1500 publications have appeared on organogermanium chemistry. The material of the present series will be grouped in a similar way as for the organotin series beginning with compounds containing only one germanium atom (mononuclear com pounds) and continuing with binuclear up to polynuclear compounds. Within each group the compounds are arranged by the kind of non-carbon substituents rather than by following the usual Gmelin principle of the last position using the Gmelin system of elements.
To some, the concept of having faith in a higher power or a set of religious beliefs is nonsensical.
